A Note On The Probability Of Misclassifying Students On The Basis Of A Multiple Choice Examination, Walter H. Carter Jr. Jan 1971

A Note On The Probability Of Misclassifying Students On The Basis Of A Multiple Choice Examination, Walter H. Carter Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The students' ability to guess correctly questions on a multiple choice examination creates a problem in the determination of the number of questions the students actually knew. Therefore, it is not unlikely that mistakes will be made when grades are assigned. In this paper, a method for calculating the probability of misclassification of students as a result of a multiple choice test in which the assumption of a uniform guessing distribution is relaxed has been discussed and illustrated. To do this it is necessary to include on the examination several questions, related to the subject matter on which the students …

Pathogenesis Of Secondary Anemia, Peter Reizenstein

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In patients with tissue damage of a malignant, infectious, inflammatory, ischemic or surgical nature, the plasma elimination (PE) of folates, iron, albumin, and cholesterol appears to be increased. Not all substances have been studied in diagnostic groups.

New Horizons In Psychiatry, James L. Mathis Jan 1971

New Horizons In Psychiatry, James L. Mathis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Psychiatrists have long held that there should be more psychiatry in general medicine, and the nonpsychiatric physicians have said that there should be much more medicine in psychiatry. Both groups have been perfectly correct and are being told by the consuming population that there must be more sociology in each of them. The future psychiatrist must and will work with his colleagues in medicine, not to achieve a utopia, but at least to approach this desirable situation in some degree.

Gynecological Problems Of Adolescents, John A. Board

Psychology Of Drug Abuse, John Buckman Jan 1971

Psychology Of Drug Abuse, John Buckman

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The history of drug abuse is as long as history. While all drugs are being abused, this paper has attempted only to elucidate some of the psychological reasons why the western adolescent might be attracted to excessive drug use or experimentation. There has grown in the past 8 years a great interest in drugs which produce an altered state of consciousness. It is the opinion of this writer that the adolescent years may be the worst years to experiment with the strong hallucinogens like LSD, mescaline, or psilocybin. The adolescent is already under enormous pressure, both from within and without, …

Psychological Aspects Fo The Management Of Adolescents With Malignancy, Charlene P. Holton Jan 1971

Psychological Aspects Fo The Management Of Adolescents With Malignancy, Charlene P. Holton

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The approach to total patient care in a teenager with malignant disease represents one of the greatest challenges to any physician. To bridge the generation gap and communicate in an area of medicine where we cannot always cure, but often only palliate, guide, comfort and listen, is often difficult for we physicians who are so often taught only how to win therapeutic battles. Malignancy is the leading medical cause of death in the 10-21 year age group in the United States. Leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, bone and brain tumors are the most commonly encountered forms of cancer during this period (Heald, …

His Bundle Recordings, Onkar S. Narula Jan 1971

His Bundle Recordings, Onkar S. Narula

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

When we record atrial activity on the His bundle electrogram we are recording from the area of the atrium which is around the tricuspid valve, that is, the lower part of the right atrium. The normal range of conduction time from the region of the sinus node to the low right atrium is about 25 to 45 milliseconds.

Alternative Methods Of Grading One Or More Multiple Choice Examinations, S. J. Kilpatrick Jr. Jan 1971

Alternative Methods Of Grading One Or More Multiple Choice Examinations, S. J. Kilpatrick Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

This paper describes the use of the standardized score in grading multiple choices examinations by computer. Since standardized scores make no allowance for guessing, it is recommended that the percent of questions known be used instead, and that a student who correctly answers significantly fewer than a predetermined number of questions be given a failing grade.

New Developments In Screening For Inborn Errors Of Metabolism, Peter Mamunes Jan 1971

New Developments In Screening For Inborn Errors Of Metabolism, Peter Mamunes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I have briefly outlined the PKU program in the State of Virginia and tried to demonstrate how this screening experience has disclosed the heterogeneity of the disease plus the need for an individualized approach to dietary control. I have applied the principles of mass screening to examine the feasibility of testing for other inborn errors and, on this basis, feel that galactosemia will soon next join with PKU. Mass screening for other aminoacidopathies will await more refined testing techniques and a definition of their incidence and mode of therapy. In the meantime, accumulated experience thus far mandates the establishment of …

Techniques Of Bedside Pacing, Leonard S. Dreifus Jan 1971

Techniques Of Bedside Pacing, Leonard S. Dreifus

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In temporary pacing the primary approach is transvenous--either percutaneous or via a cutdown in the jugular or brachial vein system. Tripolar and quadripolar pacemaker catheters which have been used for His bundle recordings are now obtainable as well as the bipolar variety. Among the latter is the floating catheter which may also be used as an intracavitary electrocardiogram. Doctor Furman of New York City has been extremely successful with this type in approximately 500 patients.

Historical Development Of Cardiac Pacing, Paul M. Zoll

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I would like to discuss the development and historical aspects of cardiac pacemaking from a personal point of view, presented as it appeared to me over the years. This approach is biased, selective, and incomplete, but I think as informative as I can make it.

Autoerthrocyte Sensitization Or Psychogenic Purpura?, Thomas G. Smith Jan 1971

Autoerthrocyte Sensitization Or Psychogenic Purpura?, Thomas G. Smith

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The following report describes the occurrence, in four women, of an abnormal response to bruising, characterized by local pain, swelling, and extension of bleeding into adjacent areas, often to a serious extent. The histories and laboratory investigations suggest that, in these patients, there has occurred a sensitization against one of their own body tissues, namely red blood cells.

Electrical Instrumentation And Hazards, Barouh V. Berkovits Jan 1971

Electrical Instrumentation And Hazards, Barouh V. Berkovits

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Electric current is both valuable and hazardous in cardiac therapy. Small amounts of electric current are enough to electrocute the patient, especially if the current is delivered through a catheter in the heart. It has been demonstrated that currents as low as 10-15 microamperes are capable of inducing ventricular fibrillation. This minute amount of current is actually a thousand times less than what you can barely feel with your hand; nevertheless, this amount of current, internally, can cause many problems. Therefore, electrical equipment, when used, must be used carefully. We must be careful of the amount of current induced by …
