Genetic Influences On Early Cochlear Vulnerability To Noise And Protection From Noise By Low-Dose Kanamycin In Hybrid Mice, Emily Kathleen Barden

Independent Studies and Capstones

Experiments evaluated both noise vulnerability and the extent of protection from noise by sub-chronic low-dose kanamycin in young F1 hybrids resulting from a cross between C57BL/6J and CBA/J inbred mice.

Research On Theory Of Mind In Deaf Education, Ashley Beauchemin Jan 2011

Research On Theory Of Mind In Deaf Education, Ashley Beauchemin

Independent Studies and Capstones

Prior research has shown that theory of mind (ToM) development is delayed in children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Although research has demonstrated a delay in ToM development in children who are deaf and hard of hearing there are not many suggestions for how ToM is or should be addressed in deaf education. The current research addressed this issue by compiling an extensive literature review and sending 113 surveys’ to OPTION schools for the deaf around the country.

Broadening Our Scope: Supporting The Need For Oral Deaf Educators In Rural Communities, Christy Suzanne Adkins Jan 2011

Broadening Our Scope: Supporting The Need For Oral Deaf Educators In Rural Communities, Christy Suzanne Adkins

Independent Studies and Capstones

This paper supports the need for oral deaf educators in rural communities and their importance in the education of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Interactions Of Alpha And Beta Synuclein Proteins In Auditory Functioning, Sarah Jane Carls Jan 2011

Interactions Of Alpha And Beta Synuclein Proteins In Auditory Functioning, Sarah Jane Carls

Independent Studies and Capstones

Alpha-synuclein is found in synaptic terminals at the base of both inner and outer hair cells, while the beta isoform is prominently localized to spiral ganglion neuron cell bodies. The present study assessed the role of beta-synuclein in auditory function, and potential interactions between isoforms.

Effect Of Stimulus Intensity On Cortical Potentials In Cochlear Implant Recipients, Laura Jean Czarniak Jan 2011

Effect Of Stimulus Intensity On Cortical Potentials In Cochlear Implant Recipients, Laura Jean Czarniak

Independent Studies and Capstones

Cortical auditory evoked potentials were recorded in cochlear implant recipients and in individuals with normal hearing using a speech stimulus. Responses were acquired over two test sessions to investigate between group differences and test repeatability. Results indicate significant differences in N1-P2 latency and amplitude measures between cochlear implant recipients and individuals with normal hearing.

Evaluation Of Auditory-Visual Speech Perception In Individuals Diagnosed With Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type, Alyse Paige Firtel Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Auditory-Visual Speech Perception In Individuals Diagnosed With Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type, Alyse Paige Firtel

Independent Studies and Capstones

Auditory-visual speech perception testing was completed using wordand
consonant-level stimuli in individuals with known degrees of dementia of the
Alzheimer’s type. The correlations with the cognitive measures and the speech
perception measures (A-only, V-only, AV, VE or AE) did not reveal significant
relationships.

Reading Comprehension And Oral Reading Fluency Of Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants, Kasie Gueringer

Independent Studies and Capstones

This study investigates whether deaf children with cochlear implants have oral reading fluency scores comparable to reading-age matched hearing peers. It also examines the reading comprehension skills of deaf children with cochlear implants.

Evaluation Of Noise Levels Experienced By Medically Fragile Neonates During Emergency Helicopter Transport, Jennifer Lynn Johnson Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Noise Levels Experienced By Medically Fragile Neonates During Emergency Helicopter Transport, Jennifer Lynn Johnson

Independent Studies and Capstones

There was a concern medically fragile infants may be exposed to high noise levels during emergency helicopter transport. This study had been initiated in 2007. Data was collected using a Larson Davis noise dosimeter. The purpose of this study was to collect additional data to evaluate the noise exposure experienced by medically fragile neonates during emergency transport via helicopter inbound/outbound of St. Louis Children’s Hospital, St. Louis, MO. The results suggested neonates may be exposed to noise levels ranging 85 to 95 dBA during transport. These high noise exposures may pose a risk to hearing.

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Audiologic Management On A Newborn Hearing Screening Program's Refer And Loss To Follow-Up Rates, Megan M. Hornof

Independent Studies and Capstones

This study includes an exhaustive review of the literature related to universal newborn hearing screening and loss to follow-up. It examines refer and follow-up rates in Missouri and highlights three successful newborn hearing screening programs under the same audiologic management.
