Formulation, Characterization, And In Vivo Immunogenicity Evaluation Of Heat-Stabilized Dissolvable Polymeric Microneedles, Aidan Lane Leyba Apr 2024

Formulation, Characterization, And In Vivo Immunogenicity Evaluation Of Heat-Stabilized Dissolvable Polymeric Microneedles, Aidan Lane Leyba

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Since its introduction, vaccination has improved health outcomes tremendously. However, modern vaccination efforts are still difficult to implement, particularly in developing countries with warm climates. This includes complex and expensive cold-chain management of vaccines to maintain stability, a lack of medical personnel to administer parental vaccines, and needle phobia. As an alternative, dissolvable microneedles have recently been studied for their simple and painless application. In this thesis, I present a novel manufacturing process for polymer-based dissolvable microneedles, loaded with virus-like particles vaccines conjugated to TRIO or Sialokinin peptides to target malaria and arboviruses, respectively. We have performed multiple characterization studies …

Inhaled Microbiomics: Targeted Delivery Of Prebiotics And Antibiotics In Patients With Cystic Fibrosis, David Arran Mcchesney, Seth M. Daly, Patricia Marshik, Pavan Muttil Mar 2024

Inhaled Microbiomics: Targeted Delivery Of Prebiotics And Antibiotics In Patients With Cystic Fibrosis, David Arran Mcchesney, Seth M. Daly, Patricia Marshik, Pavan Muttil

Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs

Adults with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) are a unique and expanding patient population in the context of massive progress in disease screening and treatment. However, exacerbations remain a significant complication of the disease associated with its decline. CF pathophysiology promotes chronic respiratory bacterial infections, which are implicated in exacerbations. An important finding in research surrounding the respiratory microbiome has correlated the loss of diversity being with a worse prognosis in chronic lung diseases. We developed an aerosol formulation towards supporting the existing, diverse respiratory microbiome. Our formulation of prebiotics with and without antibiotics was designed to fit within the complex, multistep, …

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

The turmoil unleashed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 triggered a mass migration of individuals from Russia to nearby countries like Armenia and Georgia. Amidst this upheaval, concerns have arisen regarding the mental well-being of Russian emigrants and their experiences during this turbulent period. To bridge this gap in knowledge, our study aims to examine the mental health status of adult Russian emigrants who departed from their homeland after the beginning of the conflict.

Drawing from a sample of 67 participants, comprising 30 females and 3 non-binary individuals, our research focuses on communities in Armenia and Georgia, …

Evidence Based Practice: A Decision-Making Guide For Health Information Professionals, Jonathan Eldredge Jan 2024

Evidence Based Practice: A Decision-Making Guide For Health Information Professionals, Jonathan Eldredge

Faculty Book Display Case

This Guide introduces Evidence Based Practice to newcomers as well as serves as a resource for experienced practitioners. It focuses on health information professionals (informaticists, health sciences librarians, informationists, information scientists, data managers, archivists, etc.) within the US context, although others outside of the US health context might find elements of it to be valuable.

Plausible Photomolecular Effect And Microwave In Phase Transition Of Water As A New Dawn For Renewable Energy And Ensemble-Holistic Approach To Health Management, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2024

Plausible Photomolecular Effect And Microwave In Phase Transition Of Water As A New Dawn For Renewable Energy And Ensemble-Holistic Approach To Health Management, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Interaction among light and water molecules have baffled scientists for many decades, and even centuries. In this regards, photons in the visible spectrum, where bulk water normally doesn't absorb light, can surprisingly cleave off large water clusters from the water-vapor interface, according to a recent study by Tu and Chen (2023). This discovery, termed the "photomolecular effect," opens exciting possibilities for not only revolutionizing renewable energy but also paving the way for a more integrated-ensemble approach to health management (cf. Smarandache & Christianto, 2010; Tu & Chen, 2023; Tu et al., 2024). In a sense, other than with green or …

The Influence Of English Proficiency In Online Health Information-Seeking: A Comprehensive Model Of Information-Seeking (Cmis) Based Study Using Health Information National Trends Survey (Hints) Data, Lauren M. Perez Dec 2023

The Influence Of English Proficiency In Online Health Information-Seeking: A Comprehensive Model Of Information-Seeking (Cmis) Based Study Using Health Information National Trends Survey (Hints) Data, Lauren M. Perez

Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs

Understanding language-related challenges is crucial for addressing health and healthcare access disparities. This study examines differences in online health information seeking (OHIS) experiences by English proficiency. It explores factors influencing OHIS that patients in the United States with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) may encounter to shed light on the online health information needs of patients with LEP. The research utilizes data from the 2017 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 5 Cycle 1 to analyze the OHIS experiences of patients. Findings will inform healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers, promoting equitable access to reliable health information.

Interrogation Of The Molecular Mechanisms That Finetune Fcεri Signaling And Mast Cell Outcomes, Derek A. Rinaldi Dec 2023

Interrogation Of The Molecular Mechanisms That Finetune Fcεri Signaling And Mast Cell Outcomes, Derek A. Rinaldi

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

FcεRI is the ITAM receptor primarily responsible for the allergic response and immune hypersensitivity diseases such as asthma. Regulation of the strength of both FcεRI signaling, and the resulting outcomes, is accomplished via a complex array of molecular mechanisms whose interactions remain unclear. Here, I explored how the biophysical properties of antigens, crosstalk between FcεRI and integrin signaling and Arf6-mediated control of trafficking and exocytosis tune mast cell outcomes. I first found significant differences in FcεRI aggregation, phosphorylation and granule secretion after crosslinking with the multivalent antigen DNP-BSA or the small, trivalent antigen DF3. I also revealed a bi-directional, Syk-mediated …

Environmental Ozone Exposure, Gestational Health, And The Lung-Placental Axis, Russell Hunter Dec 2023

Environmental Ozone Exposure, Gestational Health, And The Lung-Placental Axis, Russell Hunter

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Adverse gestational outcomes of pregnancy are a globally occurring threat to fetomaternal health, with limited clinical prognostic and intervention strategies aside from premature labor induction. Epidemiological data shows strong correlations between gestational exposure to air pollution and the incidence of adverse gestational outcomes. The research presented here was designed to evaluate potential murine models of gestational exposure, as well as quantify maternal cardiovascular damage therein. These studies employ radiotelemetry, echocardiography, single cell RNA-sequencing, and untargeted lipidomic analyses in efforts to study these effects. Results implicate cardiovascular responses to mid-gestational ozone exposure as evidenced by decreased maternal cardiac output and increased …
