Four Distinct Generations Of Workers Makes Leadership Challenging, Joyce K. Kutin Dec 2011

Four Distinct Generations Of Workers Makes Leadership Challenging, Joyce K. Kutin

Joyce K Kutin RN, MSN, MOL

The Bureau of Labor Statistics for the year 2000 stated that Baby Boomers (age thirty-six through fifty-four) represented fifty percent of the United States labor force while Generation X (age twenty to thirty-five) represented some thirty-three percent, a significant decline in workforce. This demographic, time bomb indicates the urgency for many organizations in developed countries to prepare for and cope with the imminent retirement of their aging workforce.

Abstract. Aim and Scope: Thousands of masters athletes participate quadrennially in the World Masters Games (WMG). However, this unique cohort remains under investigated. With a need for multifaceted solutions to the global obesity epidemic, investigating special populations such as those competing in sport at mature-older ages may further the understanding of the nexus between aging, physical activity and obesity. The aim of this cross-sectional comparative study was to investigate body mass index (BMI) within the WMG competitors in context with national populations and health guidelines. We hypothesized that the prevalence of obesity in the WMG cohort would be less than …

Driving Qi With Research: Findings From Public Health Pbrns, Glen Mays Dec 2011

Driving Qi With Research: Findings From Public Health Pbrns, Glen Mays

Glen Mays

Public health agencies are increasingly experimenting with quality improvement (QI) strategies designed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of their efforts. Does QI work in public health, and if so for whom and under what circumstances? What QI strategies work best for which types of public health process failures, and at what cost? Research underway through the Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRN) Program is examining these types of questions to build an evidence base for public health QI.

Managing Patient Flow: Is High Hospital Occupancy A Root Cause Of Ambulance Diversion?, Paris B. Lovett

Paris B Lovett

Inefficient patient flow through an

emergency department (ED) causes

long wait times, reduced patient satisfaction,

and increased walkouts (that is,

leaving without being seen, or LWBS).

Ste Sidebar 1 on page 5 for a look at

related Joint Commission requirements.

Poor patient flow may also lead to ambulance diversion- a request by an attending physician for ambulances to transport patients to other hospitals (while continuing to accept walk-in patients). EDs may go on ambulance diversion when they reach a critical state in which the volume of patients exceeds its capacity to see and treat them.

Optimization Of The Expression Of Surface Antigen Sag1/2 Of Toxoplasma Gondii In The Yeast Pichia Pastoris, Init Ithoi

Init Ithoi

Surface antigens are the most abundant proteins found on the surface of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Surface antigen 1 (SAG1) and Surface antigen 2 (SAG2) remain the most important and extensively studied surface proteins. These antigens have been identified to play a role in host cell invasion, immune modulation, virulence attenuation. Recombinant SAG1/2 was cloned and expressed in yeast Pichia pastoris. We describe here optimization of critical parameters involved in high yield expression of the recombinant SAG1/2. Our results suggest that recombinant SAG1/2 were best expressed at 30 masculineC, pH 6 and 1% methanol as the carbon source by X33 …

Background aims. Dental pulp stromal cells (DPSC) are considered to be a promising source of stem cells in the field of regenerative therapy. However, the usage of DPSC in transplantation requires large-scale expansion to cater for the need for clinical quantity without compromising current good manufacturing practice (cGMP). Existing protocols for cell culturing make use of fetal bovine serum (FBS) as a nutritional supplement. Unfortunately, FBS is an undesirable additive to cells because it carries the risk of transmitting viral and prion diseases. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to examine the efficacy of human platelet lysate (HPL) as a …

Histomorphometric Changes In Repaired Mouse Sciatic Nerves Are Unaffected By The Application Of A Scar-Reducing Agent, W.C. Ngeow, S. Atkins, C. R. Morgan, A. D. Metcalfe, F. M. Boissonade, A. R. Loescher, P. P. Robinson

Wei Cheong Ngeow

Microsurgical repair of transected peripheral nerves is compromised by the formation of scar tissue and the development of a neuroma, thereby limiting the success of regeneration. The aim of this study was to quantify histomorphometrically the structural changes in neural tissue that result from repair, and determine the effect of mannose-6-phosphate (M6P), a scar-reducing agent previously shown to enhance regeneration. In anaesthetised C57-black-6 mice, the left sciatic nerve was sectioned and repaired using four epineurial sutures. Either 100 mu L of 600 mM M6P (five animals) or 100 mu L of phosphate-buffered saline (placebo controls, five animals) was injected into …

Morphological Characteristics Of Developmental Stages Of Acanthamoeba And Naegleria Species Before And After Staining By Various Techniques, Init Ithoi

Init Ithoi

Seven stains were studied to determine the best color and contrast for staining the developmental stages of free living pathogenic Acanthamoeba and Naegleria species. The acid-fast bacilli stain (AFB) produced a blue color without contrast; trichrome-eosin and modified Field's showed various color contrasts; Giemsa, iron-hematoxylin, modified AFB and Gram produced only one color which distinguished the nucleus, nucleolus, cytoplasm, food- and water-vacuoles. The motile organs (acanthopodia, pseudopodia, lobopodia and flagella) were also clearly differentiated but produced a similar color as the cytoplasm. These motile organelles were first induced by incubating at 37 C for at least 15 minutes and then …

Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim Abu Kasim N.H.

Urea-formaldehyde (UF) microcapsules filled with dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) show potential for making self-healing dental restorative materials. To enhance the physical properties of the capsules, the urea was partially replaced with 0-5% melamine. The microcapsules were analyzed by different microscopic techniques. DSC was used to examine the capsule shell, and the core content was confirmed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Capsules in the range of 50-300 mu m were then embedded in a dental composite matrix consisting of bisphenol-A-glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) and triethylene-glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). Flexural strength, microhardness, and nanoindentation hardness measurements were performed on the light-cured specimens. Optical microscopy (OM) examination showed …

Patients’ Reports About Medical Doctors’ Inquiries On Their Mental Health: Do Generational Status, Ethnicity And Mental Health/Substance Use Disorders Matter?, Van M. Ta Park, P. Holck, T. Chen, N. Zane

Van M. Ta Park

Immigrants are less likely than others to use mental health (MH) services. Physicians' limited time often precludes inquiry about MH. This study investigated the influence of generational status, ethnicity, and mental/substance use disorders on physicians' inquiries about Asian American (AA) MH. Data from the National Latino and Asian American Study were analyzed (n=1,853). The outcome was past year physician's inquiry regarding MH. Results revealed that AA with U.S.-born parents had significantly greater odds compared to AA born outside the U.S. to report that their doctors inquired about their MH (OR=218, 95% CI: 1.28, 3.73). Past year mental/substance use disorder increased …
