Reconstructing The Genomic Architecture Of Mammalian Ancestors Using Multispecies Comparative Maps, William J. Murphy, Guillaume Bourque, Glenn Tesler, Pavel Pevzner, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Rapidly developing comparative gene maps in selected mammal species are providing an opportunity to reconstruct the genomic architecture of mammalian ancestors and study rearrangements that transformed this ancestral genome into existing mammalian genomes. Here, the recently developed Multiple Genome Rearrangement (MGR) algorithm is applied to human, mouse, cat and cattle comparative maps (with 311-470 shared markers) to impute the ancestral mammalian genome. Reconstructed ancestors consist of 70-100 conserved segments shared across the genomes that have been exchanged by rearrangement events along the ordinal lineages leading to modern species genomes. Genomic distances between species, dominated by inversions (reversals) and translocations, are …

Physiotherapy In Australia - Where To Now?, Janet C. Struber Jul 2003

Physiotherapy In Australia - Where To Now?, Janet C. Struber

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The physiotherapy profession in Australia appears to have been caught unawares by the rapidly changing demography of health services and now seems to lack a clear identity and vision. Despite being a highly competitive profession to enter, attrition rates are high. This paper reflects on the history of physiotherapy in Australia and the dichotomy of paradigms it now faces, and suggests a possible option for the future, given that existing physiotherapy roles appear difficult to sustain in our current health care climate.

Effectiveness Of Visual Perceptual Learning On Inter-Therapist Reliability Of Lumbar Spine Mobilization, Chad E. Cook Jul 2003

Effectiveness Of Visual Perceptual Learning On Inter-Therapist Reliability Of Lumbar Spine Mobilization, Chad E. Cook

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Manual therapy is a widely used treatment technique among physical therapists and is effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The theory behind the selection of the appropriate grade of mobilization dictates that proper assessment of the stiffness or resistance of a joint must occur in order to assign the therapeutic intensity. Educational models to teach this theory have shown variable success. In numerous studies, the reliability of clinicians' assessment of stiffness and movement assessment is poor. This present study involved a pre-perceptual educational model designed for 22 practicing physical therapists that performed Grade I, II, III and IV mobilizations …

Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon Jul 2003

Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Patients contact a myriad of different health care personnel in their trek through the American health care system. In the 1950s on the numerous TV shows about medicine, it was easy to discern “who was who” in the health care cast of characters in these portrayals. The physicians, like Dr. Kildare, were always male, clean cut and serious looking. Nurses wore starched white dresses with nursing caps and distinctive pins; they instantly obeyed the doctor’s orders (including the one to make the doctor a cup of coffee). For better or worse it is a different world now than it was …

E-Health: A New Approach In Healthcare Practice, Vinod K. Podichetty, Robert S. Biscup

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The Internet offers an unprecedented opportunity for healthcare information to be disseminated instantaneously. Quality of information, both scientific and nonscientific, and the development of tools to disseminate information securely via the Internet are the two most important issues related to achieving effective and wider exchange of health information. For the first time ever, information can be exchanged simultaneously and interactively all around the world, with the potential of being equally available to healthcare professionals as well as to patients. The big difference between yesterday's knowledge-based patient care and that of tomorrow, is a fundamental premise that patients will explore the …

The Low Vision Rehabilitative Service, Part One: Understanding Low Vision, Joseph J. Pizzimenti Jul 2003

The Low Vision Rehabilitative Service, Part One: Understanding Low Vision, Joseph J. Pizzimenti

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Allied health professionals are becoming increasingly adept at identifying persons that are living with low vision. Low vision rehabilitation is among the emerging areas of practice for various allied health care providers. This paper, the first of a two-part feature, provides background information that will help the allied health professional to better understand the person who will be receiving these services. The paper discusses the impact of functional vision loss, and presents a four-phase, interdisciplinary model of low vision services that can be applied to any setting, whether clinical or non-clinical. Finally, this paper describes the potential roles of the …

Perceived Motivational Factors Among Allied Health Managers And Subordinates, Sandra Barker Dunbar Jan 2003

Perceived Motivational Factors Among Allied Health Managers And Subordinates, Sandra Barker Dunbar

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

This exploratory study sought to assess the differences in perceptions among allied health managers and subordinates regarding motivation in the workplace due to a paucity of literature in this area. With an increased demand for higher productivity, an ever-changing health care system and managed care restrictions, it is also important to understand what may motivate individuals who are functioning within different work environments than in the past. The hygiene and motivator factors from Herzberg’s two factor theory created the independent variables which overlap with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs descriptions. These included Basic (job security, salary etc.), Safety (work conditions, pension), …

A Comparison Of Learning Styles Among Seven Health Professions: Implications For Optometric Education, Patrick C. Hardigan, Stanley R. Cohen Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Learning Styles Among Seven Health Professions: Implications For Optometric Education, Patrick C. Hardigan, Stanley R. Cohen

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Educational research and development efforts are most often directed at the improvement of teaching while neglecting students’ learning styles. Besides being marginally effective, an exclusive focus on improving teaching methods may lead to reinforcement of inappropriate and nontransferable learning strategies. As such, this study is being undertaken to determine if differences in personality style exist among health profession students. This retrospective-descriptive study tested the null hypothesis “there is no difference in personality traits between osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, dental medicine, optometry and occupational therapy students.” Differences as well as similarities were discovered across all seven professions. Implications …

The paper is directed at PBL in health and medicine but those educators seeking to enhance integrative thought processes, problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking, interpersonal communications, and resourcefulness among students are advised to consider PBL as an alternative approach to teaching and content delivery.

Model For Clinical Education In Athletic Training, Jeff G. Seegmiller Jan 2003

Model For Clinical Education In Athletic Training, Jeff G. Seegmiller

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Clinical education is an intrinsic part of most allied health educational programs. However, conceptual models differ as to what constitutes quality for clinical experiences. As a relatively new allied health care field, athletic training education is adapting in order to meet the needs of a changing health care environment. Recent initiatives for clinical education mark the change from a quantitative (hours of exposure) approach, to one emphasizing quality (mastery over time). However, in this transition from field-based to curriculum emphasis, the coherence between different aspects of the educational process have weakened. This paper presents a background of clinical education in …
