A Religious, Ethical And Philosophical Study Of The Human Person In The Context Of Biomedical Practices, Douglas J.W. Milne Dec 2006

A Religious, Ethical And Philosophical Study Of The Human Person In The Context Of Biomedical Practices, Douglas J.W. Milne

Theses

From the book of Genesis the human person is presented as divine image-bearer, a Godlike status that is further explained in terms of the dual constitution of matter and spirit. Natural Law provides a person-centred ethic that draws on a number of human goods that emanate naturally from the human person and lead in practice to human flourishing. This theory empowers towards making ethical decisions in the interest of human persons. Aristotle explained the human being as a substantially existing entity with rational powers. By means of his form-matter scheme he handed on, by way of Boethius, to Aquinas, a ...

Physical Activity, Aerobic Fitness, Body Composition And Asthma Severity In Children And Adolescents, Liam Welsh Sep 2006

Physical Activity, Aerobic Fitness, Body Composition And Asthma Severity In Children And Adolescents, Liam Welsh

Theses

The investigations described in this thesis were conducted in order to increase the understanding of the relationships between physical activity, aerobic fitness, body composition, asthma, and asthma severity in children and adolescents. This was largely achieved by examining the aforementioned factors in a sizeable population of Melbourne school children and adolescents. However, during the course of the school-based testing, it became apparent that the severe asthmatic category was under-represented, typical of the current literature. Thus, effort was also directed at addressing this knowledge gap by examining a severely asthmatic cohort in a laboratory-based setting. The outcomes generated by these investigations ...

The Relational Person Within A Practical Theology Of Health Care, Patrick Mcardle Sep 2006

The Relational Person Within A Practical Theology Of Health Care, Patrick Mcardle

Theses

Aim: The aim of this thesis is to elaborate a theological understanding of health care at its most vulnerable point: the meaning and exercise of personhood itself. Personhood, as I develop the concept, is understood in relational terms. Through this exploration of the relational dimensions of the human person, I provide a conceptual framework in which health care is able to derive fresh vigour and inspiration. This approach accomplishes two things: it establishes a role for theological insights in the public discourse of health care; secondly, it demonstrates that theology is able to assist health care to better understand itself ...

An Exploration Of How Nurses Construct Their Leadership Role During The Provision Of Health Care, Yvonne Therese Osborne Jan 2006

An Exploration Of How Nurses Construct Their Leadership Role During The Provision Of Health Care, Yvonne Therese Osborne

Theses

This research explores how registered nurses constructed their leadership role during the provision of health care services in acute care, adult hospitals in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. As health care organizations change to meet the demands of the twenty first century, nurses in Australia are coming to realize there is a dissonance between what they perceive to be the relevance of their work and the perception of the relevance of nurses' work by others in the health care system. Consequently, nurses' contributions to health care services are not recognized. The literature highlights that one way to address this problem is to ...

A Grounded Theory Study Of Midwives' Decision-Making: Use Of Continuous Electronic Foetal Monitoring On Low Risk Labouring Women, Janene Rattray Jan 2006

A Grounded Theory Study Of Midwives' Decision-Making: Use Of Continuous Electronic Foetal Monitoring On Low Risk Labouring Women, Janene Rattray

Theses

Many midwives continue to use Continuous Electronic Foetal Monitoring (CEFM) on low risk women in labour, despite overwhelming clinical evidence that it is unnecessary. The use of CEFM on low risk labouring women has been linked to rising rates of medical intervention during labour and birth with no improvement in long term neonatal outcomes. This study examined the decision-making processes of midwives who used CEFM on low risk labouring women. Whilst a number of previous studies have examined various aspects of CEFM, none specific to midwives' decision-making and CEFM on low risk labouring women. This study contributes to the literature ...
