Toward A Politics Of Care: Southeast Asian Refugee Organizing, Kinship, Care, And Reunion, James Huỳnh, Victoria Huỳnh, Mads Lê, Sheila Sy

Student and Faculty Publications

From a critical refugee studies orientation, our article redefines care within the context of myriad forms of state violence impacting Southeast Asian post-war refugee communities. Research reveals how harm is compounded at every step of Southeast Asian refugee journeys: war, forced displacement, resettlement, family separation, inherited health conditions, and generational trauma. How do we reckon with refugee trauma without conceding to it as an unchangeable fact of our lives? What knowledge might we gain by attending to the everyday work of survival in refugee communities? To answer these questions, the authors conceptualize care through (a) abolitionist organizing, (b) queer kinship …

Challenging Care: Examining Intersections Between Individualism, Community, And Mental Health In America, Hailey Bridges

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This literature review is an examination of the discourses on community and care in America. It aims to address the intersectionality of terms like ‘social support, ‘belonging,’ ‘care,’ and so many more across disciplines that are really an attempt at addressing the root causes of the rise of mental illness, loneliness, and hopelessness in America. This interdisciplinary cross-examination of how the practices of caring for others is influenced by the ideals of individualism in this country works to showcase how individualistic values shape the social and emotional intelligence of individuals and thus impacts the connections (or lack thereof) within communities. …

The Significance Of Palliative Care Education And Areas For Improvement, Lindsey Bunday

Honors Projects

Palliative care is vital in prioritizing quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. Such care is crucial to help patients understand their prognosis, address needs, and meet goals of care. However, physician shortages, improper utilization, and non-standardized medical curriculum amplify the gaps in care and demonstrate significant room for improvement. Innovative curriculum and opportunities for knowledge advancement can refine education and improve patient care.

The Qualitative Report

In this article, we share insights regarding an arts-based research project where carers of people with dementia conveyed their experiences in cloth. Carers face high rates of mental ill health and burnout, while forming a largely undervalued and unrecognised workforce. Through this project, carers’ knowledge was valued and amplified using an innovative methodology – craftivism. During a series of five workshops in 2021, a small group of carers, researchers and artists gathered online to develop an exhibition of craftivist textile works. They evoked the complexity of their makers’ journeys supporting loved ones at the end of life, finding joy and …

Grinding All My Life: Nipsey Hussle, Community Health, And Care Ethics, Pyar J. Seth, Carlton K. Harrison, Jasmyn Mackell

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

As John Legend said, “Nipsey was so gifted, so proud of his home, so invested in his community” (Martin, 2019). Though Nipsey Hussle certainly had a lyrical gift, the discourse after his murder remained largely focused on his work as a humanitarian and community activist. Hussle was a staunch advocate for gun control, police abolition, and education equity in Los Angeles and the State of California. Academic research has often neglected the very clear relationship between Hip Hop and health, particularly the underlying theme of improving community health. To our knowledge, Hussle never identified as a community health organizer. Still, …

Nursing Education For Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections In Intensive Care Units, Carren Sandra Mullings

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) are the most acquired hospital infection in the United States. CLABSI is caused by bacteria that enter the bloodstream through a central line. In the United States, CLABSI has a mortality rate of 18%, and every year 250,000 people are infected. Of these, 30,000 patients die due to CLABSI infections, hospital stays are prolonged, and hospital costs are increased. Patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) are more exposed to CLABSI because of procedures that break tissues and skin, such as the insertion of a central line. A gap in practice was identified …
