Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most frequent sexually transmitted infection (STI) and the causal agent of cervical and penile cancers. Globally, 570,000 cases per year in women and 60,000 cases in men are attributable to HPV. HPV types 16 and 18 are the most prevalent high-risk (HR) viral types in tumors. We have used the database of our HPV diagnostic service to determine the prevalence of HR-HPV types in our population (North-Eastern Mexico) and its implications.

Background: To guide the treatment with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), the FDA recommends prior companion molecular diagnosis (CMDx). It initially recommended screening for mutations in exon 2 of the KRAS gene, and most recently to extend to screening to exons 2, 3, and 4 of KRAS and 2, 3, and 4 of NRAS genes; furthermore, to evaluate the BRAF exon 15 mutation status (including V600E). To date, no studies have been done to compare the cost-benefit of these different CMDXs.

Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide; early detection plays a key role in reducing morbidity and mortality. In Texas’ counties lining the border, cervical cancer death rate is 30% higher than the rest of the state.

Methods: A total of 20 Internal medicine residents from the UTRGV - DHR were randomized to an intervention and control groups. Before the intervention, residents had not received any formal training skills on Pap smear technique during their residency. Background: Hypercapnic respiratory failure is a frequently encountered medical emergency. A very common cause among young patients is a side effect of opioids in the setting of an opioid crisis in both sides of the borders. Sometimes a delay in diagnosis associated with increased synthetic opioids use causes a delay in optimal management. We report a case of a patient that was negative for opioids in urine but responded to repeated dose of Narcan, the family later explained that he was obtaining medications across the border and distributing drugs.

Background: Every year in the U.S., there are 700 pregnancy related deaths that occur, with ⅔ of those deaths being preventable. African American women are 3-4% more likely to die of pregnancy related complications, mainly preeclampsia, than any other population. Preeclampsia is related to cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, which Black women are more at risk for. Objective: This systematic review will explore how preventative techniques such as the use of diuretics and physical activity during pregnancy will decrease the risk for preeclampsia in African American women compared to untreated preeclampsia complications that affect mortality rates upon delivery. …

More than 6 million people in America are living with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and there are currently no cures or treatments. It is time to move on from the ꞵ-amyloid hypothesis and broaden AD research. New research is suggesting that dietary exposure to a cyanobacterial toxin known as L-BMAA is causing neurodegenerative diseases such as AD, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson’s Disease. L-BMAA is misincorporated during protein folding, in place of the proper amino acid, L-Serine. It has been shown that the naturally occurring amino acid, L-Serine, can provide neuroprotection against L-BMAA, but the mechanism by which L-Serine infers …

Dysphagia screenings are important to be done for all stroke patients in order to prevent aspiration, pneumonia, and other complications. All patients should be screened regardless of severity of stroke. Many policies outline that all patients should be screened, but many floors are not implementing the policy on all patients. This article reviews research associated with dysphagia screenings and how to properly perform one. Dysphagia screenings should be performed on all stroke patients at the hospital to achieve the best outcomes post-stroke.

Background: Parental concerns are usually highly predictive of child developmental delays; however, the relationship of parent concerns with Part C Early Intervention (EI) service use is unclear.

Objective: The goals of this project were to test the associations of parent concern presence, age of child at time of parent concerns, number of concerns, type of parental concern, and recency of parental concerns, with EI evaluation, eligibility, and services engagement after referral.

Where do hockey players shoot from? How does this vary from player to player? We present the results of a study that uses data-driven statistical methods to investigate these questions. The locations of shots by National Hockey League (NHL) players from 2011 to 2017 are analyzed using a combination of an image recognition algorithm and spatial statistical methodology. An unsupervised classifier is applied to output from a spatial point process model in order to determine which shot locations best characterize a given player. The Latina Paradox is the observation that Latina mothers in the United States have better than expected birth outcomes despite lower socioeconomic status and higher prevalence of risk factors. The Latina Paradox is particularly prominent among women born in Mexico that immigrate to the U.S. prior to having children. Mexican-born women who give birth in the U. S. experience fewer incidences of low birth weight than White women born in the U. S. For many in the Latinx community, the question of “Who am I?” depends heavily on your skin color, your gender, your hair texture, your accent, and other factors that distinguish you as non-caucasian, rather than on how many languages you speak, how well you can dance, your passion, or how deeply you love. Identity reflections are at the core of self-esteem and empowerment and can take place in a variety of settings, but unfortunately, many of these settings are tailored to the majority group as well as the individual running the exploration, leaving many Latinx individuals left out.This workshop was …
