Shifting The Load: Improving Bioscience Performance In Undergraduate Nurses Through Student Focused Learning, Angela Owens, Tracey Moroney May 2016

Shifting The Load: Improving Bioscience Performance In Undergraduate Nurses Through Student Focused Learning, Angela Owens, Tracey Moroney

Angela Owens

Background
Bioscience has a long history of being challenging to teach and learn within nursing courses and little has been published on new ways to assist students in their learning. The aim of this study was to determine which of three different interventions would assist student performance in a nursing bioscience unit.
Method
To begin, the contribution of recent prior learning in science was investigated by comparing the final exam marks of 182 students in the bioscience unit with the science marks they achieved at high (secondary) school. The effect of recent prior learning was then tested by investigating whether …

Background: Multiple factors have created a perfect storm of health care provider shortages in the United States. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), long established as high-quality, cost-effective health care providers, are meeting health care needs across the nation in a variety of settings, and in Wisconsin will be needed to augment the primary care workforce. With 5.7% of its registered nurses credentialed as APRNs, Wisconsin lags behind the national average of 8.7%. However, current capacity to educate this workforce is strained, requiring innovative data-driven clinical education models. Purpose: To identify gaps in the current clinical educational framework for nurse practitioner …

Palliative Practices: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Kim Kuebler, Mellar Davis, Crystal Moore

Crystal Moore

The first book of its kind, this must-have resource examines the integration of palliative interventions from a disease-specific approach, providing practical guidance on caring for patients who follow a progressive, chronic disease trajectory prior to death. This uniquely practical book addresses all aspects of palliative care, going beyond theoretical information to advise practitioners on the most effective management of common symptoms and providing physical, psychological, and spiritual comfort to patients and families. The multidisciplinary focus of care is reflected by collaborative contributors and diverse authorship of an oncology/palliative care nurse practitioner, a physician, and a social worker.

Crystal Moore

The Physician Orders for LifeSustaining Treatment (POLST) form provides choices about end-of-life care and gives these choices the power of physician orders. The POLST form assures end-of-life choices can be implemented in all settings, from the home through the health-care continuum. The use of the POLST form was evaluated in a pilot study in nursing homes in two eastern Washington counties. Chart reviews and template analysis of interviews revealed the POLST form accurately conveyed end-of-life wishes in 19 of 21 cases. An informed consent process was evidenced in 16 of 21 cases, and the POLST form was congruent with residents' …

Efficacy And Efficiency In Natural Family Planning Services, Richard Fehring Feb 2016

Efficacy And Efficiency In Natural Family Planning Services, Richard Fehring

Richard J Fehring

Relatively few Catholic couples in the United States use modern methods of natural family planning (NFP). So too, few Catholic physicians and health professionals prescribe the use of NFP methods for their patients. Reasons for low use of NFP methods include their perceived low efficacy; the complexity of learning, using, and teaching these methods; and the prolonged (and often unnecessary) required abstinence. Newer and simplified methods of NFP have been developed by physicians and scientists that are less complex and use modern technologies of detecting fertility and communicating instructions. Catholic physicians and scientists need to continue to answer the call …

Developing The Value Proposition For The Role Of The Registered Nurse In Care Coordination And Transition Management In Ambulatory Care Settings, Sheila Haas, Beth Ann Swan

Sheila A. Haas, PhD, NP, FAAN

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010) established clear provisions for Patient-Centered Medical Homes and Accountable Care Organizations. In both, care coordination and transition management are methods to provide safe, high quality care to at-risk populations such as patients with multiple chronic conditions. The emphasis on care coordination and transition management offers opportunities for nurses to work at their full potential as an integral part of the interprofessional team. Development of a model for the registered nurse in care coordination and transition management provides nurses the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be a resource to …

Enhanced access and continuity are key components of patient-centered care. Existing studies show that several interventions such as providing same day appointments, walk-in services, after-hours care, and group appointments, have been used to redesign the healthcare systems for improved access to primary care. However, an intervention focusing on a single component of care delivery (i.e. improving access to acute care) might have a negative impact other components of the system (i.e. reduced continuity of care for chronic patients). Therefore, primary care clinics should consider implementing multiple interventions tailored for their patient population needs. We collected rapid ethnography and observations to …

Advance practice nurses are knowledge workers, capable of synthesizing data from health information systems and translating it into knowledge and actions that lead to the provision of safe and high quality patient care. The interdependent relationship between technology and quality issues that exists in the modern healthcare environment has challenged nursing faculty to design curricula that will produce graduates who are not simply competent users of technology, but more importantly, are empowered to become members of interdisciplinary teams responsible for the effective design and implementation health information systems. The Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) initiative is addressing the …

Screening For High-Risk Alcohol Use On Campus - A Translational Research Project, Janette Neuman

Janette S. Jones

High-risk alcohol use occurs on college campuses across the United States. A 2008 Core Alcohol and Drug Survey performed on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in northeast Indiana, found an annual prevalence rate of alcohol consumption by students of 82.3%. A commitment to reduce high-risk alcohol use by IPFW students is supported by IPFW leadership in congruence with Healthy Campus objectives. A translational research project using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was implemented at IPFW’s nurse-managed health and wellness clinic in order to increase student awareness of high-risk drinking behaviors, administer risk-reducing interventions, and …

Health Care Access For Hoosiers, Janette Neuman

Janette S. Jones

A variety of barriers contribute to delays in accessing health care in Indiana. Medically underserved areas and health professional shortage areas further potentiate barriers creating additional delays. Reduction in barriers to access is critical for promoting optimal health for Hoosiers. Advanced practice nurses may be the answer for reducing access dilemmas by developing nurse-managed health centers and by maintaining active employment in Indiana's Community Health Centers.

Joining Forces: Learning About Veterans Using Healthcare Simulation Techniques, Janet Willhaus

Janet Willhaus

Military Veterans seek healthcare in many settings. Some qualified for services may use Veterans Administration hospitals and clinics, but many receive care in other private sector offices and facilities. In 2012, the White House’s Joining Forces initiative to support service members, veterans, and their families was extended to include education for nursing students. The National League for Nursing (NLN) with the support from the Laerdal Medical Corporation commissioned the development of four sets of simulation scenarios to help educate nursing students about the culture and needs of Veterans from certain eras.

Optimizing Linear Growth Measurement In Children., Jan Foote Sep 2015

Optimizing Linear Growth Measurement In Children., Jan Foote

Jan M. Foote

A child's pattern of linear growth is one of the most sensitive indicators of health and well-being. However, many health care personnel use casual techniques and faulty instruments to measure children's growth and keep imprecise growth charts, making interpretation of growth patterns problematic. This situation can delay diagnosis and treatment of children with growth disorders and other conditions that affect growth. It can also lead to undue anxiety and unnecessary evaluation of children who are actually growing well. A clinical practice guideline was developed to optimize the accuracy and reliability of linear growth measurement. This article presents strategies to implement …
