Binge Eating Disorder is the compulsive behavior to overeat food, usually within a brief time frame. Symptoms such as anxiety, fear of being fat and perfectionism could trigger a person to binge eat. Network analysis is a statistical approach in health psychology that uses graphical representations of relationships among variables, and could be useful in identifying the symptoms that cause Binge Eating Disorder. There is growing concern regarding the use of e-cigarettes among younger demographics. Also known as vaping, e-cigarettes have been posited as a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes and have increased in popularity due to marketing, added flavors, and discreet delivery methods (Durkin et al., 2021; Hart et al., 2017). Research has shown dangerous and adverse outcomes of using e-cigarettes, including mood disorders, attention deficit, addiction, and lung injury (Durkin et al., 2021; Krishnasamy et al., 2020).

Years before the COVID-19 pandemic brought on a health care shortage in the United States, its rural areas were already struggling to obtain and attract primary care medical practitioners. The federal government has designed many programs with the intent of exposing clinicians to life in rural areas, but few have been successful at keeping medical practitioners in the long-term. Clinicians who are recruited to rural areas via loan repayment programs or other short-lived incentives often leave after only a few years.

1 in 6 children face food insecurity and experience limited access to healthy foods in Kentucky. The Power of Produce (POP) Club is a farmer’s market incentive and nutrition education program for families with children aged between 3 and 14. This project is a 10-week pilot study in Lexington, Kentucky and it aims to improve fruit and vegetable consumption by engaging children in the local food system through educational activities, interactions with farmers, and exposure to new local fruits and vegetables through taste-testing. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is preventable. While all racial and ethnic groups are susceptible to the condition, African Americans (AAs) are among the groups with the highest T2D prevalence (13.3%:9.4 %) among their white counterparts. Lifestyle interventions, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) effectively decrease incident diabetes by 58%. Moreover, evidence indicates that culturally adapted health interventions enhance subject participation and increase adherence to lifestyle programs. The synthesis of air-stable ligand-free nanopalladium hydride (PdNHx) in water was achieved and applied to various organic transformations, including (1) reduction of heteroaromatics such as (iso)quinolines, phenanthrolines, benzotriazole, and naphthyridines, (2) regio- and chemoselective reduction of nitroarenes, (3) alkyne reductions, (4) chemoselective dehalogenation, and (5) base-free detriflation. Both the synthesis of PdNHx and the reductions were carried out under mild conditions in a micellar medium using our designer surfactant PS-750-M, which eliminates the need for toxic organic solvents and extremely high hydrogen pressure and temperature. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is defined as permanent dilation of the abdominal aorta by more than 50% of its normal diameter. As AAAs grow progressively, the aorta can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding. Preliminary data demonstrates that angiotensin II (AngII), which can induce AAA, plus testosterone were powerful stimulants for expression of neprilysin in abdominal aortic smooth muscle cells from male mice. Neprilysin is a metalloendopeptidase, which can cleave and inactivate AngII and natriuretic peptides. Immunotherapy strategies are very promising treatments for cancer patients. Specifically, Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy focusing on the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway shows long-lasting positive results in many cancer patients. Unfortunately, not all the patients can benefit from this highly effective treatment. Hence, there is a great need for predictive biomarkers. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining has been used as a way of predicting patient response, yet shows many problems. For example, IHC utilizes an invasive biopsy and sample fixing, which creates an incomplete and delayed picture of the patient’s biochemistry and the tumor microenvironment, consequently ignoring metastases.

Cisplatin is a chemotherapy compound effective against a variety of cancers. However, it can act as an ototoxin and cause hearing loss by promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in auditory tissues. The antioxidant amino acid, L-serine has been hypothesized to lower levels of cisplatin-mediated ROS. In this project, we investigated whether L-serine can reduce cisplatin-mediated ROS production in auditory tissue and potentially act as an otoprotectant during cisplatin chemotherapy. We used a zebrafish utricular tissue culture system and fluorescent ROS indicator dye to spectrophotometrically measure if L-serine could decrease reactive oxygen species levels in cisplatin-treated tissues. The development of drug resistance with cisplatin or platinum/taxane combination chemotherapies has led patients to suffer from recurrent lung cancer. These chemotherapy treatments target cancer cells but leave behind cancer stem cells. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are stem-like tumor cells that have the potential to differentiate, self-renew, and proliferate.
