“We Have To Improve Our Culture About This”: Family Planning Decision-Making Among Women And Men Living In Florence, Italy, Alyssa Amidei, Taylor Raff, Andrea L. Demaria
Health Behavior Research
The male condom is the most widely used family planning method in Italy and Southern Europe. Most family planning research is focused on women and, therefore, could be missing significant gender differences in behavior, as male partners play a critical role in decision-making and pregnancy prevention. This study aimed to explore attitudes toward contraceptive methods, including decision-making and desired improvements related to family planning in Italy. Semi- structured interviews with 42 men and women aged 18–50 years (29.1±7.9) living in or near Florence, Italy, were conducted between May and June 2019. Techniques from thematic analysis allowed for a constant comparative …
A Community-Based Distribution Intervention For Family Planning Among Women In Northern Nigeria, Joy Matau Garba
A Community-Based Distribution Intervention For Family Planning Among Women In Northern Nigeria, Joy Matau Garba
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Northern Nigeria, inadequate information on family planning contributes to high mortality and morbidity rates in women of reproductive age due to multiple childbirths yearly. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the community-based distribution (CBD) strategy, religion, and attitudes toward family planning methods. Rosenstock’s health belief model, which can be an instrumental anchor for health promotion programs, was the theoretical framework for the quantitative cross-sectional study design. The data source was survey questionnaires administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development to 809 reproductive-age Nigerian women after implementing a CBD intervention. A multinomial logistics regression analysis showed that …

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
Breakthrough RESEARCH has conducted a study to monitor the family planning (FP) quality assurance branding campaign in Côte d’Ivoire called Confiance Totale. Implemented by Breakthrough ACTION, Confiance Totale (French for Complete Trust) aims to increase demand for and use of quality FP services in Francophone West Africa. The promotional campaign, developed in early 2020, theorizes that promotion of safe and effective FP within a supportive social context will lead to an increase in demand for FP services, following the theory that mass media influence not only individual FP skills and knowledge but also environmental supports, constraints, and ideational factors …

Demand For And Access To Family Planning Services Among Young Married Women During Covid-19 Crisis, Unicef, Population Council Institute
Demand For And Access To Family Planning Services Among Young Married Women During Covid-19 Crisis, Unicef, Population Council Institute
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
In Bihar, India, as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown and men returning home in large numbers and spending more time at home in high stress conditions, the need for contraceptive services could get greater. March to May are considered the “lean season” when demand is typically low for family planning (FP) programs in states like Bihar. However, higher demand caused by the lockdown and lack of access to health facilities has created a gap between demand and uptake. This could have negative consequences such as high numbers of unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and maternal mortality. Current use of modern …
Predictors Of Rapid Repeat Pregnancy In Zimbabwe, Thenjiwe Sisimayi
Predictors Of Rapid Repeat Pregnancy In Zimbabwe, Thenjiwe Sisimayi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Rapid repeat pregnancy (RRP) is associated with adverse maternal and infant outcomes and a range of undesirable social and economic challenges for the mother, her baby, and society. Although the consequences of RRP are well known, Zimbabweâa country with some of the poorest maternal health indicatorsâhas not investigated or made efforts to directly address this problem. This is confirmed by the lack of targeted programs to curb RRP, the unavailability of documented evidence regarding RRP significant risk factors, and the lack of understanding of the extent of RRP in the country. Using social cognitive theory as the theoretical framework, an …

The goal of family planning and reproductive health operations research is to generate evidence that helps policies and programs maximize access to and quality of services for women and their families. Yet the crucial step of ensuring the utilization of that evidence often receives inconsistent or inadequate attention. The goal of this case study is to document an activity of Marie Stopes International (MSI) in Kenya, part of the STEP UP research program consortium, which resulted in successful evidence utilization. STEP UP research on quality of care for medical abortion, particularly on pharmacy provision of medical abortion, has provided the …
Family Planning Dynamics In Zimbabwe, Heidi Weidele
Family Planning Dynamics In Zimbabwe, Heidi Weidele
Senior Honors Projects
Almost 90 percent of all women in Zimbabwe lack health insurance. Most are undereducated or underemployed, and only have access to maternal and contraceptive care via public clinics. There is a large gap in family planning services in both rural and urban areas, which leads to a lack of necessary care in many communities. Bivariate and multivariate analyses on demographic data (Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey 2015) collected by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency and compiled by the United States Demographic and Health Surveys Program were performed to determine the relationships among public health services and female demographics (including education, …

Reduce Contraception Discontinuation In Bangladesh By Improving Counseling On Side Effects, Fauzia Akhter Huda, Sabiha Chowdhuri
Reduce Contraception Discontinuation In Bangladesh By Improving Counseling On Side Effects, Fauzia Akhter Huda, Sabiha Chowdhuri
Reproductive Health
High rates of contraceptive discontinuation and method failure could cause Bangladesh to lose the progress made in increasing contraceptive use over the past 20 years. This policy brief concludes that if women are adequately counseled and supported to sustain their use of more effective contraceptive methods, they will need less medical attention, have fewer unintended pregnancies, and reduce the workload for medical clinics. Furthermore, if providers are adequately trained and supported in counseling and managing side effects and in helping women to switch methods when they do have a problem, the Family Planning Clinical Contraception Services Delivery Program would meet …

Reproductive Health
Although Kenya has made significant progress in ensuring its citizens’ right to reproductive health, many Kenyans still lack access to or fail to use contraceptives, in part because of the lack of quality family planning (FP) services. Through the STEP UP research program, the African Population and Health Research Center developed a comprehensive country profile report that outlines the status, causes, and consequences of unintended pregnancy in Kenya. One of the most prominent findings was how important public health facilities are to reducing unmet need for FP. In order to solidify gains achieved and make further progress, concerted commitment from …

Increasing Access To Family Planning And Reproductive Health Services Through Community Work: A Case Study Of A Dual Cadre Model In India, Jaleel Ahmad, Isha Bhatnagar, M.E. Khan
Reproductive Health
Before the introduction of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in India, mid-level auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) were responsible for community health education and services such as antenatal care, delivery, IUCD insertion, and sterilization referrals. The Population Council studied how community extension work and some primary care responsibilities have been shifted to ASHAs, who are tasked with identifying pregnant women; facilitating ANC check-ups; motivating women for institutional deliveries during ANC checkups; and organizing child immunization. Establishing dual worker cadres in India by shifting community extension tasks from ANMs to local ASHAs has been well conceived. Task shifting has allowed ANMs, as …

Key Opinion Leaders' Views Regarding Emergency Contraception In India, M.E. Khan, Isha Bhatnagar, Deepthi S. Varma, Anvita Dixit
Reproductive Health
This policy brief explores the views of key opinion leaders (KOLs) in the field of reproductive health and family welfare on provision of emergency contraception (ECPs). The study’s objective was to gain a better understanding of how the attitudes and beliefs of KOLs might influence policy and program implementation, either encouraging or opposing ECP promotion and service delivery. Results suggest strong support by the majority of KOLs to continue the sale of ECP as an over-the-counter drug. KOLs also emphasized the importance of comprehending and addressing the main barriers to ECP provision and use: poor knowledge, lack of training, moral …

Repositioning Community-Based Family Planning In Ghana: A Case Study Of Community-Based Health Planning And Services (Chps), Stephen Ntsua, Placide Tapsoba, Gloria Quansah Asare, Frank K. Nyonator
Reproductive Health
The Population Council conducted a diagnostic appraisal of delivering family planning services using the community-based health planning and services (CHPS model) in Ghana. This study’s results indicate that the CHPS program is well appreciated by rural communities where it is operational. However, the study identified several developments with implications for service delivery: increased community health officer (CHO) workloads and concomitant reductions in outreach services and home visits by community health visitors (CHVs) have weakened the CHO-CHV working relationship, leaving both cadres working in isolation. CHPS has significantly improved health indices but its contribution to increasing family planning is limited and …
