Background

This study evaluated the real-world impact of acupuncture on analgesics and healthcare resource utilization among breast cancer survivors.

Methods

From a United States (US) commercial claims database (25% random sample of IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus for Academics), we selected 18–63 years old malignant breast cancer survivors experiencing pain and ≥ 1 year removed from cancer diagnosis. Using the difference-in-difference technique, annualized changes in analgesics [prevalence, rates of short-term (< 30-day supply) and long-term (≥ 30-day supply) prescription fills] and healthcare resource utilization (healthcare costs, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits) were compared between acupuncture-treated and non-treated patients.

Results

Among 495 (3%) acupuncture-treated patients (median age: 55 years, stage 4: 12%, average 2.5 years post cancer diagnosis), most had commercial health insurance (92%) and experiencing musculoskeletal pain (98%). Twenty-seven …

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to investigate the impact of differing hair densities on dose distributions for proton plans in the head and neck region.

Methods: Four CT scans were acquired with varying hair densities. Plans were created on a no hair scan using both a 3cm and 5cm range shifter. Plans were then calculated using three additional datasets with varying hairstyles to analyze dosimetric differences. Water equivalent depth and distance from 80% isodose line to user origin were analyzed for each scan and compared.

Multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MP-MRI)-derived radiomics have been shown to capture sub-visual patterns for the quantitative characterization of prostate cancer (PC) phenotypes. The present dissertation seeks to develop, evaluate, and compare the performance of an MRI-derived radiomic model for the prediction of PC recurrence following definitive treatment with radical prostatectomy (RP).

MP-MRI was obtained from 339 patients who had a minimum of 2 years follow-up following RP at three institutions. Schizophrenia is associated with high levels of creativity and structural traits like fewer D2 receptors. Patients face reduced life expectancy due to cardiovascular diseases and cope through smoking and sedentariness. Treatment involves pharmacological antipsychotics like olanzapine and nonpharmacological approaches. Olanzapine works by antagonizing D2 receptors but has side effects like weight gain and diabetes risk. fMRI is used to study treatment mechanisms and predict response, but research on olanzapine's brain network effects is limited.

The Impella, a ventricular assist device, is crucial for managing severe heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Despite its widespread use, there's scant information on how hyperlipidemia affects Impella patients. To address this gap, we delved into the National Inpatient Sample Database from 2019 and 2020. Our aim was to scrutinize in-hospital outcomes among these patients. We identified 8233 Impella patients, among whom 1012 (12.3%) had hyperlipidemia. Those with hyperlipidemia displayed higher rates of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease compared to their counterparts without hyperlipidemia. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an abdominal inflammatory condition that is common in premature neonates. Although abdominal radiograph (AR) remains the imaging standard for NEC, it may miss up to 50% of early signs of NEC and has been described to have a sensitivity as low as 15.4% for detecting pneumoperitoneum. Abdominal ultrasound (US) is portable, non-invasive, and allows real-time bowel integrity, movement, and perfusion assessment. Morel-Lavallée lesions (MLLs), first described by their namesake, French physician Victor-Auguste-François Morel-Lavallée, in 1863, represent a distinct category of soft-tissue degloving injuries. These injuries occur when a shearing force disrupts the connection between subcutaneous tissue and fascia, severing lymphatic vessels and capillaries, and leading to an encapsulated collection of lymph, blood, and necrotic fat.
