Nursing Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to describe the process of creating a faculty development program for online instruction. Both educational and technological issues are discussed. Factors that will facilitate and barriers that will impede the implementation of online courses are included. Many faculty concerns regarding online courses relate to the issues of quality and student learning. Faculty development activities are directed to ensure that courses are developed using sound educational theory and principles. Online courses are first about student learning; using the technology is second. Thus, faculty development programs must be two-pronged, involving instructional design and technology. It is …

Critical Care Nurses Be Aware: Lemierre's Syndrome Is On The Rise, Roseanne Jane, Patricia Johnson

Patricia Johnson

Lemierre's syndrome (LS) typically occurs in previously healthy young adolescents and young adults who become acutely ill following an attack of pharyngotonsillitis. Also known as post anginal sepsis, those afflicted develop pyrexia, rigours and multiple metastatic abscesses that lead to septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. In the pre-antibiotic era this particularly virulent syndrome had a mortality rate in excess of 90%, but since the introduction of antibiotics and the widespread treatment of throat infections, it has became almost unknown. However, due to a number of factors, including a reduction in the use of antibiotics for the treatment of …

There is a growing emphasis on building the evidence base as governments, health systems, practitioners, and consumers, nationally and globally, search for ways to improve health care outcomes and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of health services.

Nurses and midwives constitute the largest group of health service providers in the majority of health systems around the globe.

The WHO Global Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery recommended that WHO should form strategic alliances with partners to identify uniform core indicators and build a solid body of evidence to inform national health policies, particularly in the area of cost-effective nursing and …

Diet And Exercise In Low Income, Culturally Diverse Middle School Students, Marilyn Frenn, Shelly Malin

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

It is important to understand constructs essential to low-fat-diet and physical-activity behaviors of low-income culturally diverse middle-school-age students, because ethnicity and socioeconomic status influence body weight status, and these groups are most at risk for obesity later in life. In this descriptive study, constructs important in low-fat diet and physical activity in low- to middle-income, culturally diverse middle school students were examined. Revised for cultural/developmental appropriateness and reading level, instruments incorporating constructs from the Health Promotion and Transtheoretical Models were tested with 221 youth. Results demonstrated that percentage of fat in diet, total number of strategies used for a low-fat …

The Effectiveness Of A Congestive Heart Failure Teaching Program To Community-Based Elders, Debbie Meggs Aug 2003

The Effectiveness Of A Congestive Heart Failure Teaching Program To Community-Based Elders, Debbie Meggs

MSN Research Projects

Heart failure affects more than 4.6 million people in the United States (Dahl & Penque, 2000). While mortality from myocardial infarction is on the decline, congestive heart failure numbers continue to rise. Statistics indicate that 550,000 cases occur each year, at an estimated cost of $21.4 billion a year (National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 2002). Elders with congestive heart failure (CHF) do not always understand their disease nor do they recognize its symptoms. Recognition of CHF symptoms can lead to improved management and self-care. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide basic, low-literacy …
