Activities Of Nurse Practitioners As Identified By Medical Directors Of University Student Health Services, Candace Beaman Moore, Miriam Lee Gottlieb
Activities Of Nurse Practitioners As Identified By Medical Directors Of University Student Health Services, Candace Beaman Moore, Miriam Lee Gottlieb
Theses and Dissertations
University health services play a very important role in the general health, performance, and well-being of the students, the university itself, and the community. As stated by the American College Health Association, the goal of a university health service is to "promote and maintain those conditions which will permit and encourage each individual to realize optimum physical, emotional, intellectual, and social well-being."
University students have special health care needs such as drug and alcohol abuses, emotional problems, and gynecological, sexual, and contraceptive problems. It is the goal of the health professionals involved with students to meet those needs. Because of …

Sensory Stimulation To Promote Deep Breathing In The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patient, Sharon Kay Sauer
Sensory Stimulation To Promote Deep Breathing In The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patient, Sharon Kay Sauer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Breathing retraining has been an integral part of respiratory rehabilitation for the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.). Techniques used for breathing retraining have been studied for many years. These techniques include such breathing retraining modalities as relaxation conditioning, positioning maneuvers, abdominaldiaphragmatic breathing, pursed lip breathing and intermittent positive pressure breathing. Controversy concerning the therapeutic value of many of these techniques has developed. In this descriptive case study on three subjects with C.O.P.D. the experimental technique of sensory stimulation was investigated as a breaching retraining method. Sensory stimulation consisted of five minutes of repetitive brushing and two to three …
Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb
Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine maternal and paternal perceptions of the neonate. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure perception.
Thirty couples who delivered normal, healthy, first-born infants at a Naval Hospital in San Diego volunteered for the study. Consent forms were signed during the hospital stay and the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was administered to both parents in the homes when the infants were one month old.
Statistical analysis of data showed that mothers and fathers did rate their one-month-old infants as above the average infant using the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory. The range …

The Effect Of The Warm Water Bath On Axillary Temperature In Normal Newborns, Ann J. Morton
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the warm water bath and the radiant heater on the axillary temperatures of normal newborns. The sample group consisted of thirty newborns--15 babies placed into the water bath in Group I, and 15 babies placed under the radiant heater in Group II. Birth weights were between 6.25 and 8.75 pounds, gestational ages between 37 and 41 weeks, and 5-minute Apgar scores were 8 or more. The maternal temperatures, taken within two hours before birth, ranged between 97 and 99 degrees. All infants were born by spontaneous or low-forceps vertex …
The Effect Of Preoperative Instruction And Unit Orientation On Selected Postoperative Factors Of Nonemergency Critical Care Surgical Patients, Sharon Stephens Espersen
The Effect Of Preoperative Instruction And Unit Orientation On Selected Postoperative Factors Of Nonemergency Critical Care Surgical Patients, Sharon Stephens Espersen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The intensive care unit's effect on the patient has become a subject discussed often by nurses and other health team members. One of the nursing interventions that has been implemented to attempt to de crease the potentially harmful environmental effects of the ICU on the patient is orienting the patient about what to expect prior to the ICU admittance.
A major problem is that most intensive care unit (ICU) patients are admitted to the unit on an emergency basis. Few studies, therefore, have focused on the effects of preoperative instruction of ICU patients. The studies that have been done were …

Assertion Training Of Nursing Home Residents, Roberta Saul
Assertion Training Of Nursing Home Residents, Roberta Saul
Dissertations and Theses
The National Organization for Women use assertion training as a part of its strategy to overcome the oppression of women in our society. Certainly another group of people who suffer from oppression are the elderly. When a person in our society reaches age 65, he or she may suddenly be perceived as of decreased worth and may face forced retirement and quite often may have to adjust to a lifestyle of poverty. If an elderly person's physical health begins to wane, a nursing home may suddenly become the day to day environment he or she must accept.

During the first quarter of the twentieth century, when southern law and social practice demanded segregated facilities, the Medical College of Virginia established a separate school of nursing for African American women to provide trained personnel for the St. Philip Hospital. The Saint Philip School of Nursing opened with the hospital in the fall of 1920 and graduated 791 nurses during its 42-year history. The story of the school is told in A Historical Bulletin of the Saint Philip School of Nursing and Alumnae Association. It includes a general history, information on the curriculum, listing of the faculty, rosters of …

Changes In Serum Osmolality And The Clinical Manifestations Of The Dialysis Disequilibrium Syndrome, Donna L. Young
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the change in serum osmolality in the chronic renal failure patient on hemodialysis and the number of clinical symptoms of the dialysis disequilibrium syndrome experienced during hemodialysis. The study was conducted at the Renal Dialysis Unit of an urban medical center located in a southeastern city. Data were collected from May 25, 1978 to June 30, 1978. Data were obtained during 28 hemodialysis procedures performed on 11 subjects. Serum osmolality measurements were collected prior to initiation of the dialysis procedure, at half-hour intervals during dialysis, and prior …

Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager
Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager
Theses and Dissertations
Most of the richness and beauty of life is derived from the close relationship that each individual has with a small number of other human beings--mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, and a small cadre of close friends. With each person in this small group, the individual has a uniquely close attachment or bond. Much of the joy and sorrow of life revolves around attachments or affectional relationships--making them, breaking them, preparing for them, and adjusting to their loss.
This study dealt with one of those special attachments, the relationship a child formed with his newborn brother or …
The Emotional Care Of The Dying Patient And His Family, Denise Williams
The Emotional Care Of The Dying Patient And His Family, Denise Williams
Honors Projects
For the most part, men and women take health for granted. Not until something endangers this health, do they realize how precious life really is to each of them. Thus, when a person is diagnosed as having any major illness, such as cancer, it is not difficult to understand why this person would feel fear and depression, as well as a multitude of other emotions.
A Content Analysis Of The Advertisements In Three Nursing Journals: What Are They Saying About The Aged?, Ann Temborius
A Content Analysis Of The Advertisements In Three Nursing Journals: What Are They Saying About The Aged?, Ann Temborius
Honors Projects
Ageism is not a new phenomenon. Aristotle himself wrote of the wonders and beauty of youth and stated his belief that after the age of fifty, man definitely 'declined. 'But never before has the emphasis on youth been so profound in our society. Youth is associated with worth, value and productivity; the aged individual is seen as having little to contribute to our fast-moving, technologically-exploding society.
The Effects Of Environmentally Induced Influences On The Neurologial Maturation And Weight Gain Of Premature Infants, Valerie Eastman
The Effects Of Environmentally Induced Influences On The Neurologial Maturation And Weight Gain Of Premature Infants, Valerie Eastman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Premature birth deprives the infant of the influences of maternal uterine stimulation on his physical growth and neurological development. It also deprives the newborn of the influences of the maternal sleep cycle and other aspects of maternal cyclicity. This problem has been recognized and studied for at least two decades by physiologists and neonatologists, but very few studies have been done on manipulating the premature infant's environment in order to foster cyclic patterns such as sleep.
It had been observed by this investigator that premature infants in a neonatal intensive care unit are often disturbed from quiet sleep so that …
