Exploration Of Factors Affecting Nurse Faculty Use Or Resistance To Online Education, Lisa M. Harless Dec 2016

Exploration Of Factors Affecting Nurse Faculty Use Or Resistance To Online Education, Lisa M. Harless

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

The substantial increase in online nursing program enrollment demands that nurse educators be adept in the delivery of online education; however, a significant challenge exists in how to deliver practice-based nursing education in the online environment. Teaching online requires a change in the traditional role of the educator accompanied by the effective use of online learning technologies. Some studies suggest that faculties remain pessimistic to online delivery of education and do not participate, yet few objectively examine variables that influence resistance or use. Included in this dissertation are two manuscripts. The first manuscript defines resistance and addresses prominent concerns associated …

Impact Of Nurse Fatigue And Nursing Handoffs On Patient And Nurse Safety, Melody A. Seitz

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

In healthcare today, patient safety continues to be a major concern. Nurse fatigue from long work shifts and inadequate patient handoffs may lead to errors and near errors that harm patients and nurses. The intent of this study was to fill a gap in understanding the effect shift length has on patient safety and maternal newborn nurses’ personal safety. A cross sectional survey design was administered via Qualtrics, a web-based online software program. Participants included two groups of maternal newborn nurses. One group worked 8-hour shifts (N = 70) and the other group worked 12-hour shifts (N = 151). Statistical …

Effect Of A Yogurt Intervention On Adiposity And Metabolic Outcomes In Women, Eryn N. Boyet Dec 2016

Effect Of A Yogurt Intervention On Adiposity And Metabolic Outcomes In Women, Eryn N. Boyet

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Over 40% of women in the United States are obese. The Strategic Plan for NIH Obesity Research focuses on “ways to hasten the translation of research evidence from discovery to intervention.” The Strategic Plan also calls on investigators to look at influential points in the lifespan which may affect obesity. Few interventional studies on obesity in women during the perimenopausal time period have been completed. Research in broader populations suggests increased dairy, particularly full-fat products, may decrease central adiposity and improve metabolic indicators of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dairy …

Concept Analysis Of Value, Colleen Marzilli Nov 2016

Concept Analysis Of Value, Colleen Marzilli

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Value is a word that is used in many aspects of the world. Understanding the concept of value helps guide the professional in their daily practice as they perform their daily functions. The review of value as a concept is based on an understanding of what value is through how it is used and its defining attributes. To strengthen this understanding, a model case and a contrary case are provided to guide an application of the concept of value in different settings. To support this, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents are discussed. Through a discussion of the concept of value, …

Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera Nov 2016

Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Obesity significantly contributes to human illness and to subsequent rising healthcare expenditures. Bariatric surgery has been identified as the only effective option to achieve the weight loss necessary for those who are morbidly obese. Previous research indicated that maintaining significant weight loss has been a problem for individuals who undergo bariatric surgery. The number of bariatric surgeries is increasing and factors that contribute to or interfere following bariatric-surgery weight-loss maintenance need to be determined. Research on weight-loss maintenance following bariatric surgery is very limited, particularly among the Hispanic population. This case-study research used an explanatory, multiple-case-study design to gain greater …

Validating A Taxonomy Of Nursing Practice For Oncology Clinical Trial Nurses, Michelle A. Purdom

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Confusion exists on the roles and contribution of oncology nurses in the care of cancer clinical trial patients. Quantitative evidence of their roles and contributions is lacking in the literature and job descriptions vary. A study to fill this gap examined the dimensions of nursing practice and evaluated tasks performed by three groups of United States oncology nurses who practice in research settings: direct care providers, study coordinators, and those with a dual role of both coordinator and direct care provider. The study tested a theoretical, five-dimensional model of nursing practice by using the Clinical Research Nurse Role Delineation survey. …

A Follower - Centric Model: Predictors Of Job Satisfaction And Perception Of Leader Effectiveness In Lebanese Registered Nurses, Rana S. Abdel Malak

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Leaders and their followers share the work environment; they live the same challenges, and face the same problems (Baker, 2007; Uhl-Bien et al., 2014). However, in nursing little is known about the effect of the quality of the manager – follower relationship and work engagement in formulating a follower’s perception of leadership and its impact on job satisfaction. In a country such as Lebanon that has the eighth lowest nurse density in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) and suffers from excessive nurse migration and low nurse satisfaction and retention rates (El-Jardali, Dimassi, Dumit, Jamal, & Mouro, 2009) understanding the factors …

Effects Of A Sleep Hygiene Text-Message Intervention On Sleep In College Students, Christine S. Gipson

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Young adulthood is a time of transition with multiple stressors that may affect healthy lifestyle habits such as sleep. Prolonged sleep disturbances can have harmful health effects along with increased risk for development of chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a text-message intervention on sleep among young adult college students. Using Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), it was hypothesized that a sleep hygiene text-message intervention would increase sleep hygiene knowledge, increase sleep hygiene, improve self-efficacy for sleep hygiene, and improve sleep quality among young adult college students.
