I Hear You: The Everyday Struggle Living With Misophonia, Ashton Jones Jan 2021

I Hear You: The Everyday Struggle Living With Misophonia, Ashton Jones

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The term misophonia is derivated from the Greek words misos, (hate), and phónè, (voice); it translates as hatred of sound. It is the term used to describe people who are irregularly affected by everyday noises. The first scientific observations by Pawel J. Jastreboff regarding misophonia indicate “individuals with misophonia are sensitive to a specific set of trigger sounds, which are usually recognized since childhood.” These types of sounds tend to be trivial noises, such as chewing or crunching, sniffing, breathing, clicking, lip smacking, and tapping. The noises can trigger an onslaught of negative emotions and violent reactions.

Parameter Estimation And Optimal Design Techniques To Analyze A Mathematical Model In Wound Healing, Nigar Karimli

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

For this project, we use a modified version of a previously developed mathematical model, which describes the relationships among matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs), and extracellular matrix (ECM). Our ultimate goal is to quantify and understand differences in parameter estimates between patients in order to predict future responses and individualize treatment for each patient. By analyzing parameter confidence intervals and confidence and prediction intervals for the state variables, we develop a parameter space reduction algorithm that results in better future response predictions for each individual patient. Moreover, use of another subset selection method, namely Structured Covariance Analysis, that …

Numerically Solving A System Of Pdes Modeling Chronic Wounds Treated With Oxygen Therapy, Stefan Stryker

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers are the leading cause of non-traumatic amputations in developed countries. For researchers to better understand the physiology of these wounds, a mathematical model describing oxygen levels at the wound site can be used to help predict healing responses. The model utilizes equations that are modified from work by Guffey (2015) that consists of four variables – oxygen, bacteria, neutrophils, and chemoattractant within a system of partial differential equations. Our research focuses on numerically solving these partial differential equations using a finite volume approach. This numerical solver will be important for future research in …

Effect Of Coconut Oil On Ulcerative Colitis In The Mouse Model, Pranav Chandra Alok May 2013

Effect Of Coconut Oil On Ulcerative Colitis In The Mouse Model, Pranav Chandra Alok

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease of the colon or large intestine that causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. In patients with ulcerative colitis, the body’s immune system overreacts and the body mistakes food, bacteria or other internal materials in the colon for an invading substance. The immune system attacks the material, thus irritating the colon. Limited knowledge of inflammatory conditions coupled with a narrow range of therapeutic options necessitates investigating the role of natural products. This study describes the effect of natural coconut oil on chemically-induced acute and chronic disease in …

The Prevalence Of Essential Hypertension In Kasigau, Kenya, Lindsay Williams May 2012

The Prevalence Of Essential Hypertension In Kasigau, Kenya, Lindsay Williams

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Hypertension is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease worldwide. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a widespread chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) which is on the rise in developing countries. Evidence based on extensive research studies on risk factors for NCDs suggests that they could be easily significantly decreased by simply controlling their risk factors. Although high blood pressure has been recognized as a leading risk factor for CVD, little research has been done to document the prevalence and incidence of essential hypertension (EH) in lower socioeconomic developing countries. One such country is Kenya. It was found in our research study that Kasigau …

Activity Of Analogs Of Anticancer Drugs On The Serine Protease Enzymes Subtilisin And Chymotrypsin, Dhatri Ravipati

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The anticancer activity of several platinum compounds is due to the formation of complexes with DNA. We hypothesize that the size and shape of the platinum compounds would impact interaction with proteins, and these interactions may be partly responsible for the anticancer activity. Chymotrypsin and subtilisin are serine proteases that have a histidine residue in the active site. We are investigating the inhibition of the digestive enzymes chymotrypsin and subtilisin by analogs of the anticancer drug cisplatin and trying to discern trends in the inhibition as the active site residues vary. In our research, we found that the enzyme subtilisin …

Measuring Accessibility To Primary Care Physicians In The Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area, Sami M. Almudaris

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The growing concern for the shortage of primary care physicians (PCPs) prompted a government legislation to designate areas where shortage in the delivery of primary care services occurs. The implemented systems (e.g., HPSA, MUA, and MUP) analyze utilization of health services within confined administrative units and fail to account for spatial interactions that occur across administrative borders. This research examines the spatial accessibility to PCPs and the underlying demographic and socioeconomic settings. With the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as a study area, this study utilized data from the U.S. Census 2000 and 2010, as well as the known locations …

Population Structure Of Limenitis Butterflies In Hickman, Kentucky, Mollie Johnson Aug 2008

Population Structure Of Limenitis Butterflies In Hickman, Kentucky, Mollie Johnson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Two species of Limenitis butterflies occur along the Mississippi River at Hickman, Kentucky: the viceroy, L. archippus, and the red-spotted purple, L. arthemis astyanax. Limenitis archippus occurs at a frequency that is 10-30 times more abundant than its congener, L. arthemis astyanax. Interspecific matings between L. archippus and L. arthemis astyanax are very rare in the wild and give rise to a hybrid form Limenitis archippus X L. arthemis astyanax form rubidus. Only 7 heterospecific pairings between the parental species and 72 "rubidus" individuals have been documented in the wild in all of North America. Of these documented cases, 2 …

Effects Of Barren Reservoir On Upstream Fish Assemblages Of Barren River Tributaries, Mario Sullivan May 2008

Effects Of Barren Reservoir On Upstream Fish Assemblages Of Barren River Tributaries, Mario Sullivan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of dams have long been investigated by aquatic ecologists. However, most of the research has focused on the physio-chemical changes when a lotic system is turned into a lentic system, dams as barriers to migratory fishes, and the influence of introduced species often stocked into reservoirs. It has not been until relatively recently that the upstream effects have been studied. The central theme here is that while the dam proper creates a barrier it is possible that the resulting zone of standing water may also fragment streams from an otherwise connected river system. Stream adapted species that encounter …

Longitudinal Variation In Fish Community Along The Upper Green River Below The Green River Lake, Joshua Wilsey May 2008

Longitudinal Variation In Fish Community Along The Upper Green River Below The Green River Lake, Joshua Wilsey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The impoundment of flowing waters can cause decreased variation in flow and temperature, reduce habitat availability, and decreased mean temperature below a reservoir. These types of alterations can influence fish communities. Twelve sites were sampled along the Upper Green river in order to address the potential influence of impoundment on fish communities below the Green River Lake. The habitat features: mean depth, flow, dominant substrate, embeddedness, percent riffle, run and pool were measured. Temperature probes were placed at each site in order to measure temperature over an extended period of time. Backpack electrofishing and seining was used to obtain fishes. …

Pcr-Ddge Comparison Of Fecal Bacteria From Captive And Wild Populations Of The Endangered San Esteban Island Chuckwalla (Sauromalus Varius), Tina Kelley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Most modern reptiles are carnivorous or insectivorous, whereas less than 2% of the >7,800 currently recognized species are considered to be herbivorous. Of these, herbivory is confined entirely to lizards; less than 3% of known lizard species eat significant amounts of plants. Most, if not all, herbivorous animals utilize a population of symbiotic microorganisms which can break down plant structural polymers. This study analyzes the bacterial populations from fecal/uric acid deposits of wild and captive samples of the endangered, herbivorous San Esteban chuckwalla (Sauromalus varius: Iguanidae). Substrate and diet samples were also analyzed. Most studies of digestive symbionts use indirect …

Coregulation Of A Neighboring Est With Rhogap, Tia Hughes May 2008

Coregulation Of A Neighboring Est With Rhogap, Tia Hughes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It has been reported that the crossveinless-c locus of Drosophila melanogaster corresponds the RhoGAP88C gene. This determination was based on three criteria: proximity in genetic map position, complementation tests, and similarity of phenotype between RhoGAP88C RNAi constructs and the phenotype of hypomorphic cv-c' mutant homozygotes, both of which eliminate posterior crossveins (Denholm et al. 2005). There are several genes that map to this region of chromosome 3, including both RhoGAP88C, and a poorly annotated PDZ-domain containing gene corresponding to Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) Clot 13975 (approximately 60 kb upstream from the RhoGAP88C transcriptional start). A P-element insertion P[PZ]l(3)06951 is located …
