Supporting Children With Disabilities At School: Implications For The Advocate Role In Professional Practice And Education, Stella Ng Phd Jan 2015

Supporting Children With Disabilities At School: Implications For The Advocate Role In Professional Practice And Education, Stella Ng Phd

Stella Ng PhD

Purpose: School settings are a common practice context for rehabilitation professionals; health advocacy is a common and challenging practice role for professionals in this context. This study explored how pediatric practitioners advocate for children with disabilities at school. Specifically, we examined everyday advocacy in the context of school-based support for children with disabilities.

Method: Our theoretical framework and methodological approach were informed by institutional ethnography, which maps and makes visible hidden social coordinators of work processes with a view to improving processes and outcomes. We included families, educators, and health/rehabilitation practitioners from Ontario. Of the 37 consented informants, 27 were …

Learning Approaches Towards An Examination-Comparing Distant And Close Timing, Siew Yim Loh Assoc Prof, Kia Fatt Quek Apr 2014

Learning Approaches Towards An Examination-Comparing Distant And Close Timing, Siew Yim Loh Assoc Prof, Kia Fatt Quek

Siew Yim Loh

Learning approaches of medical students have been much examined. However, there is comparatively very little that is known about the learning approaches of students in other health care professions. The aim of this study is to understand the learning approaches of a cohort of occupational therapy students, when faced with an approaching essay-type examination. A longitudinal study was conducted on a group of undergraduate students (n=29). The Coles Entwistle Learning Inventory was used to measure their learning approaches at two different times, 1-2 months (‘distant’) and 1 week (‘near’) to an essay examination. The desirable learning approaches reduce detrimentally at …

A Critical Theory Response To Empirical Challenges In Report-Writing: Considerations For Clinical Educators And Lifelong Learners, Stella Ng Phd Jan 2014

A Critical Theory Response To Empirical Challenges In Report-Writing: Considerations For Clinical Educators And Lifelong Learners, Stella Ng Phd

Stella Ng PhD

Purpose

Audiologists working with/in school settings write reports, communicating assessment results and recommendations. Yet there is a gap in education and professional development regarding report-writing and the effects reports can have on children and interprofessional relationships. This article highlights the ways that the linguistic and visual construction of reports affect possibilities for children and inter-sector collaboration among clinicians, school-based professionals, and families.

Methods

We began with two main problems stemming from report-writing, as identified in a larger research study of the clinic-school interface. We employed a critical social science theoretical framework to generate three considerations for report-writers to ameliorate the …

Emotional Intelligence And Spiritual Well-Being Among Nursing Students (Abstract), Audrey Beauvais, Susan Denisco, Julie G. Stewart Apr 2013

Emotional Intelligence And Spiritual Well-Being Among Nursing Students (Abstract), Audrey Beauvais, Susan Denisco, Julie G. Stewart

Julie G. Stewart

Purpose: To examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and spiritual well-being among nursing students. Conclusion and Implications: The significant relationship between emotional intelligence (Branch 4-managing emotions) and spiritual well-being as well as existential well-being in this study supports the statements in the literature that spirituality is related to both emotions and the rational application of those emotions. Emotional intelligence may aid in spiritual development, well-being, and education as emotions are a basis of awareness and engagement within humanity. Research is needed to examine if strategies to enhance emotional intelligence can facilitate the process of increasing spiritual well-being with a test-retest …

Laboratory Office Hours As Outreach In The Health Sciences: Better Research Skills For Better Careers, Todd Prusin Jan 2012

Laboratory Office Hours As Outreach In The Health Sciences: Better Research Skills For Better Careers, Todd Prusin

Todd Prusin

Medical librarianship is changing in health care environments. Since 1996, by which time the standards that determine how hospitals acquire accreditation changed, many hospitals have been acquiring accreditation without a qualified medical librarian on site. For that reason, it has become even more important that health care professionals, doctors, nurses, and other clinicians learn to access and evaluate quality information as an integral part of their academic training. Medical clinicians now must begin their careers with strong research skills. These skills must be attained during their academic matriculation, and studies in the field of librarianship have shown that departmental outreach …

Physician-Assisted Suicide An Ethical Way Out Or An Easy Way Out, Joshua M. Benson Jan 2012

Physician-Assisted Suicide An Ethical Way Out Or An Easy Way Out, Joshua M. Benson

Joshua M Benson

Is it ethical, and/or should it be legal, for a terminally ill patient to substitute their will for that of God or nature by allowing them to decide when he or she is ready to die? The death of Dr. Jacob “Jack” Kevorkian last summer brought physician-assisted suicide back into the public limelight. Since 1988, the general public, the courts, legislatures, and physicians have been debating whether it is moral, ethical, or legal to allow for physician-assisted suicide. Recently, the state of Washington’s legislature adopted Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act and Montana’s judicial system found physician-assisted suicide to be legal. …

The Clinical Gaze In The Practice Of Migrant Health: Indigenous Mexican Migrants In The United States, Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md

Seth M. Holmes PhD, MD

This paper utilizes eighteen months of ethnographic and interview research undertaken in 2003 and 2004 as well as follow-up fieldwork from 2005 to 2007 to explore the sociocultural factors affecting the interactions and barriers between U.S. biomedical professionals and their unauthorized Mexican migrant patients. The participants include unauthorized indigenous Triqui migrants along a transnational circuit from the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, to central California, to northwest Washington State and the physicians and nurses staffing the clinics serving Triqui people in these locations. The data show that social and economic structures in health care and subtle cultural factors in biomedicine keep …

Public Perceptions And Attitudes Toward Thalassaemia: Influencing Factors In A Multi-Racial Population, Maryanne Jin Ai Tan Maryanne

Mary Anne Tan Jin Ai

Thalassaemia is a common public health problem in Malaysia and about 4.5 to 6% of the Malays and Chinese are carriers of this genetic disorder. The major forms of thalassaemia result in death in utero of affected foetuses (α-thalassaemia) or life-long blood transfusions for survival in β-thalassaemia. This study, the first nationwide population based survey of thalassaemia in Malaysia, aimed to determine differences in public awareness, perceptions and attitudes toward thalassaemia in the multi-racial population in Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional computer-assisted telephone interview survey of a representative sample of multi-racial Malaysians aged 18 years and above was conducted between July …

Prevalence And Molecular Study Of G6pd Deficiency In Malaysian Orang Asli, Farahnaz Amini Jan 2011

Prevalence And Molecular Study Of G6pd Deficiency In Malaysian Orang Asli, Farahnaz Amini

Farahnaz Amini

This study aims to define the prevalence and the molecular basis of G6PD deficiency in the Negrito tribe of the Malaysian Orang Asli. Four hundred and eighty seven consenting Negrito volunteers were screened for G6PD deficiency through the use of a fluorescent spot test. DNA from deficient individuals underwent PCR-RFLP analysis using thirteen recognized G6PD mutations. In the instances when the mutation could not be identified by PCR-RFLP, the entire coding region of the G6PD gene was subjected to DNA sequencing. In total, 9% (44/486) of the sample were found to be G6PD-deficient. However, only 25 samples were subjected to …
