Experienced-based methods are growing in popularity and are increasingly being utilized in a variety of research programs and investigations. They enable researchers and participants to co-design research strategies and outcomes and subsequently propose solutions to potential problems in the partnership. BACKGROUND: To examine age-specific differences in the frequency and impact of cardiac and non-cardiac conditions among patients aged 65years and older hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

METHODS: Study population consisted of 3863 adults hospitalized with AMI at 11 medical centers in central Massachusetts on a biennial basis between 2001 and 2011. The presence of 11 chronic conditions (five cardiac and six non-cardiac) was based on the review of hospital medical records.

Nudging With The Health Security Index: Behavioral Economics In Coalition Development, Glen P. Mays

Healthcare coalitions can use comparative data from the National Health Security Preparedness Index, combined with insights from behavioral economics, to strengthen community engagement and investment in coalition activities. Using Index results, we demonstrate how organizational preparedness and individual behavior interact at the systems-level to produce unique strengths and vulnerabilities in health security for individual states and communities. Strategic use of comparative data can nudge stakeholders toward greater cooperative behavior and stronger coalition engagement. This session illustrates specific tools and approaches for data-driven coalition nudging.

  • Continued disparities in delivery of pneumococcal vaccine services to FFS Medicare beneficiaries in rural and urban communities are noted, with a 63% higher vaccination rate observed in urban areas.
  • The majority of pneumococcal vaccine services delivered to FFS Medicare beneficiaries were provided by primary care providers, although pharmacy providers delivered close to one-fourth (24.2%) of these services.

Background: Comprehensive and effective multiple sclerosis (MS) health care requires understanding of patients’ needs, preferences, and priorities. Objective: To evaluate priorities of patients with MS for their MS care. Methods: Participants included 3003 Americans with MS recruited through the National MS Society and the North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis patient registry. The aim of this study was to explore perceptions of patient-centered care (PCC) among Veterans with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) on proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy using patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures. We used three validated surveys to measure PCC concepts in a national sample of Veterans with GERD on PPI therapy. As part of a qualitatively-driven mixed-methods study, this analysis aimed to describe Veterans Affairs (VA) Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team patients’ experiences with patient-centered care. Veterans participated in audio-recorded, semi-structured photo-elicitation interviews about their health and VA health care. Transcripts were analyzed by two coders using template analysis. This study examined racial and geographic differences in access to a usual source of care (USC) and it further explored these differences among individuals who had a USC that followed the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model. Using cross-sectional data from the Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (2008-2013), our sample consisted of non-institutionalized US civilians ages 18-85 (n= 146,233; weighted n = 229,487,016). The aim of this study was to identify and explore organisational barriers to, and enablers of, patient and family centred care within an Australian acute care hospital from the perspective of that hospital’s management staff. In self-managed attendant services, disabled people organize and manage their own personal support services. ‘Self-managers’ take responsibility to recruit, hire, train and manage ‘attendants’ in order to have greater autonomy in attendant services, and in everyday life. Where the tasks associated with self-managing attendant services are often represented as responsibilities, this research begins with the assumption that these activities constitute work. Purpose: This review systematically identified and critically appraised the available literature that has examined the association between religiosity and/or spirituality (R/S) and quality of life (QOL) in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Methods: We searched several electronic online databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and CINAHL) from database inception until October 2017. Included articles were peer-reviewed, published in English, and quantitatively examined the association between R/S and QOL. We assessed the methodological quality of each included study.

This data brief by researchers at the Maine Health Access Foundation and the University of Southern Maine's Maine Rural Health Research Center found ongoing inequality in the ability of people in Maine to get quality health care. The report examines data from 2014-2016 and shows that Maine people, of all income groups, report difficulties in paying medical costs. Research has also found the ability to seek timely and appropriate health care is impacted by income levels, educational background, race and ethnicity.

Approximately 23% of Americans over age 12 have some level of hearing loss.1 Emergency departments can reduce healthcare barriers for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHoH) patients through improved patient-physician communication.
