The Role Of Bone Sialoprotein In Periodontal Tissue Development And Bone Repair, Yohannes Soenjaya
The Role Of Bone Sialoprotein In Periodontal Tissue Development And Bone Repair, Yohannes Soenjaya
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Bone development and repair involve complex processes that include interaction between cells and their surrounding matrix. In the body, bone sialoprotein (BSP) expression is up-regulated at the onset of mineralization. BSP is a multifunctional acidic phosphoprotein with collagen-binding, hydroxyapatite nucleating, and integrin recognition (RGD sequence, which is important for cell-attachment and signaling) regions. Mice lacking BSP expression (Bsp-/-), exhibit a bone phenotype with reductions in bone mineral density, bone length, osteoclast activation, and impaired bone healing. This thesis examined the role of BSP in tooth development and also its potential use as a therapeutic reagent for bone …

Assessing Orthodontic-Bracket Impacts On Lip Profile At Bonding And Debonding Stages, Martin Trockel
Assessing Orthodontic-Bracket Impacts On Lip Profile At Bonding And Debonding Stages, Martin Trockel
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: One factor that contributes greatly to the lower face appearance and orthodontists have the ability to affect is lip profile. Clinical assessment of the lip profile is an important element in the decision of orthodontic treatment planning and in the evaluation of treatment progress and outcome. Three known factors influence the lip profile; the lip thickness, the underlying bone, and the tooth position. The positions and inclinations of the anterior teeth can affect the lip position, but it is unclear whether orthodontic brackets bonded to the labial surface of anterior teeth move the lip position and thereafter change the …

Effects Of Sodium Hypochlorite On Enamel Composition, Sonni Pellillo
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of sodium hypochlorite on the organic and inorganic composition of enamel. Background: With the advent of enamel bonding for orthodontic appliances in the late 1970s, it has been shown that traditional phosphoric acid etching affects the inorganic portion of the enamel.1, 2 In an attempt to enhance the acid etching pattern and, furthermore, the bond strength, additional pretreatment techniques that target the organic components of the enamel biofilm have been proposed. One such method is the non-invasive enamel pretreatment with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) prior to phosphoric acid etching.3, 4 …
Dental Hygienists' Cognitive Process In Periodontal Soft Tissue Charting, Kelsey M. Schwei
Dental Hygienists' Cognitive Process In Periodontal Soft Tissue Charting, Kelsey M. Schwei
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Dental hygienists have not had the opportunity to be involved in the design and development of the periodontal soft tissue charts and the surrounding interface features that are used while examining dental patients in daily practice. In some cases, dentists are able to give their opinions, wants, and needs into the development of the health information systems that they use on a daily basis, but too often, the dental hygienist is forgotten about and no input is ever given to the developers from the dental hygienists. This project considers the impact of well-designed interfaces on effectiveness and workflow particularly …

Access To Oral Health For Children On Mainecare In The Lakes Region Towns Of Bridgton, Casco, Sebago, And Naples, Carissa L. Parent
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Although we know that children covered by Medicaid often do not receive needed dental services, the extent of the problem in Maine is not fully understood. In particular, rural communities in Maine may face challenges for families to access dental services for their children given low reimbursement rates and fewer available providers. This project addresses these gaps in knowledge by examining MaineCare- funded utilization and dental care access for children with MaineCare in four rural Maine towns in the Lakes Region.
Synthesis And Functional Evaluation Of Peptide Modified Poly (Lactic-Co-Glycolic Acid) Nanoparticles To Inhibit Porphyromonas Gingivalis Biofilm Formation., Paridhi Kalia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Periodontal disease is an oral inflammatory disorder that afflicts roughly 46% of the adults in the U.S. Currently, treatment of periodontal disease involves the removal of plaque from the gingival pocket (with possible antibiotic treatment) and if necessary, gingival surgery. To our knowledge, no therapeutic approach exists that promotes host-biofilm homeostasis by limiting pathogen recolonization of the oral cavity after prophylaxis or treatment. The interaction of the pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis with commensal streptococci is critical for initiation of periodontitis and represents a target for limiting P. gingivalis colonization of the oral cavity. Previous studies showed that a synthetic peptide …

Scardovia Wiggsiae Prevalence In Orthodontic Patients, Brandon Joseph Streiff
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Dental caries has mainly been associated with Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, Actinomyces and Veillonella species. But in recent salivary studies a new cariogenic pathogen, has been identified. This new bacteria, Scardovia wiggsiae (SW), is currently being tested within the UNLV School of Dental Medicine patient population. Although these current studies are being conducted to study its prevalence in both pediatric and adult populations, it has not been evaluated among patients with an altered oral environment as seen in patients with orthodontic appliances. Fixed orthodontic appliances increase the difficulty of removing daily plaque on and in between the teeth with standard oral hygiene …
Dexamethasone Regulates Gene Expression Induced By The Mechanosensitive P2x7 Receptor In Osteoblasts, Meena Na
Dexamethasone Regulates Gene Expression Induced By The Mechanosensitive P2x7 Receptor In Osteoblasts, Meena Na
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Orthodontic tooth movement involves activation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in response to mechanical forces. Extracellular nucleotides, released in response to mechanical stimuli, signal through P2 receptors in osteoblasts. P2X7 receptors are ATP-gated cation channels implicated in mechanotransduction in bone. Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone exhibit anti-inflammatory effects and their chronic use has been linked to serious side-effects such as osteoporosis. We investigated gene expression following P2X7 receptor activation with benzoylbenzoyl-ATP (P2X7 receptor agonist) in osteoblast precursor cells in the presence or absence of dexamethasone. We hypothesized that dexamethasone inhibits the ability of ATP to stimulate the expression of anabolic (bone forming) …

An Evaluation Of The Constructed Frankfort Mandibular Plane Angle Bisector (Cfmab) Wits' Appraisal In The Assessment Of Anteroposterior Jaw Relationships, Derek R. Tomson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
For proper orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, an accurate measurement of the relationship of the maxilla to the mandible in the sagittal plane is required. The ANB measurement has long been the gold standard for explaining this association. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to evaluate three linear measurements of the maxillomandibular anteroposterior relationship and determine which one best correlates with ANB. The constructed Frankfort horizontal-mandibular plane angle bisector (cFMAB-Wits), maxillomandibular bisector (MMB-Wits), and Frankfort-mandibular plane angle bisector (FMAB-Wits) were measured using a Wits’-type analysis and compared to ANB.

Mass Spectrometric Analyses Of Surface Proteins From Candida Albicans After Treatment With Histatin 5, Shirley Fan
Mass Spectrometric Analyses Of Surface Proteins From Candida Albicans After Treatment With Histatin 5, Shirley Fan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Current drug therapies have lost their effectiveness in controlling the fungal species known as C. albicans; therefore, the need for newer drugs becomes crucial. Histatin 5 (Hst 5), a naturally occurring peptide found in the oral cavity, has demonstrated strong effects on controlling candidiasis. Here, we have proposed that the adhesion of cells through surface proteins is an important process. To allow the analysis of surface proteins, the concept of on-whole cell tryptic digestions were developed. This on-target approach allows for isolation of the peptides of interest, while greatly reducing digestion times.
To study the effects of Histatin 5 …
