Bulletins 4000 -

This edition of the 2021 Crop Sowing Guide includes the major crops grown in WA - wheat, barley, canola, oat, lupins and pulses. The publication aims to provide information to support growers with decisions on the best choice of variety for each of the major crops for the upcoming season. The lupin and pulse sections also include an agronomy guide summary to support management decisions required for these high-valued crops. Market feedback for barley has been provided by GIWA to help with the decision on what to grow.

As well as varietal characteristics and performance, it contains information on herbicide resistance, disease, agronomic factors, deliveries and marketing.

Much of the information presented this year is on the basis of the ‘Agzone’. This is an amalgamation of the traditional ‘region zone cells’which were coded H1 to L5 according to length-of-growing season zones from north to south (1 to 5) and rainfall regions, based on annual average rainfall, from west to …

The Chemical Composition And Nutritive Value Of Australian Pulses, S. Sipas, J. B. Mackintosh, D. S. Petterson

Books & book chapters

Grain legumes are the harvested seed of leguminous crops, typically peas, beans and their close relatives within the Fabaceae. Another term for many of these crops is pulses. In Australia, generally grain legumes are referred to as pulses. The term pulse is derived from the Latin puls meaning that the seed or grain can be made into a thick soup or pottage. The term pulse is most commonly associated with the food legumes whereas grain legumes are mostly associated with the feed industry. The terms are interchangeable, but with few exceptions (notably chickpeas, lentils and mung beans), the majority of …

Bean Yellow Mosiac Virus In Lupins, Roger Jones Jan 1997

Bean Yellow Mosiac Virus In Lupins, Roger Jones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) is a threat to lupin crops in high rainfall areas of south-western Australia, particularly in districts where subterranean clover pastures are prevalent. The disease causes markedly reduced grain yield in all types of lupins. Worldwide this is the most important virus affecting lupins. The author outlines the symptoms, spread and management of this serious disease.

Weeds Can Poison Crops, Aik Hock Cheam Jan 1996

Weeds Can Poison Crops, Aik Hock Cheam

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Weeds can interfere with the growth of a crop simply by competing with the crop for nutrients, moisture and light. But some weeds also release chemicals that inhibit the germination and growth of crop plants; the technical term for this is allelopathy. Aik Cheam outlines the problems caused by two common weeds and the discusses preventative measures.

Planting Seeds For A Sound Future, Peter Portmann Mar 1995

Planting Seeds For A Sound Future, Peter Portmann

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Royalties have been collected sales of all new crop varieties released in We tern ustralia by the Department of Agriculture since the lease of Merrit lupins and Yilgarn oats in 1991.

Many questions have been raised by farmers about these royalties. Why pay royalties when we have already paid for the development of the varieties through our Grains Research end: Development Corporation levy? Why should we pay a Jevy if it - is just going back into Government revenue? Is there any real benefit to us?

Coming To Grips With Eradu-Patch Of Lupins, Bill Macleod, Mark Sweetingham

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Investigations by Bill MacLoud and Mark Sweetingham have confirmed that Eradu-patch of lupins is caused by apreviously undescribed fungal pathogen,\.

They have developed strategies to minimise the spread of patches but choices are limited for control in lupin crops

Cucumber Mosiac Virus In Lupins, Annette Bwye, Roger Jones, Wayne Proudlove Jan 1995

Cucumber Mosiac Virus In Lupins, Annette Bwye, Roger Jones, Wayne Proudlove

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Cucumber mosaic virus is a threat to lupin crops from Geraldton to Esperance, particularly to those growing in areas receiving more than 400 mm average annual rainfall. The disease markedly decreases grain yield in narrow-leafed and yellow lupins but doesnot infect albus or sandplain lupins. Worldwide , after bean yellow mosaic virus, cucumber mosaic virus is the second most important virus affecting lupins. Annette Bwye, Roger Jones and Wayne Proudlove outline the symptoms, spread and management of this serious disease.

Lupin Stubbles : Getting The Best With Weaner Sheep, Keith Croker, Colin Mcdonald, Jeremy Allen Jan 1994

Lupin Stubbles : Getting The Best With Weaner Sheep, Keith Croker, Colin Mcdonald, Jeremy Allen

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Sweet lupins are now grown on about a million hectares in Western Australia each year. If half of the State's seven million weaners were grazed as recommended on half of the lupin stubbles, it could generate about $15 million from reduced supplementary feeding, greater wool production and other advantages. But correct management is important, particularly knowing when to take weaners out. Research by the Department over the last five years is now indicating how this should be done.

Crops In The Woolbelt : Current Options And Emerging Prospects, Wal Anderson, Ross Gilmour, Robyn Mclean, Peter Nelson, K H.M Siddique, Paul Carmody, Ian Prtichard

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

It has traditionally been more profitable to grow sheep for wool in the medium rainfall parts of the south-west of Western Australia than to grow crops . Crop production has been difficult owing to the hilly terrain, the frequency of waterlogging, the high incidence of damaging frosts in some areas, the frequency of losses from diseases, difficulties with wet weather at harvest, and a lack of adapted crop varieties.

Advances over the past decade have made cropping on a limited scale potentially profitable in the woo/belt.

This article is intended to bring the various options for crop production to the …

Establishment Of Lupin Seedlings, Miles Dracup Jan 1993

Establishment Of Lupin Seedlings, Miles Dracup

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Good seedbed conditions lead to high and rapid seedling emergence and vigorous seedlings best equipped to avoid disease, weed competition and sand-blasting. Good establishment is needed for a high yielding crop.

In Western Australia, seedbed moisture and temperature are most likely to limit successful emergence of lupins, especially with the trend toward early sowing.

Research by the Department of Agriculture is helping to define seedbed temperature and moisture requirements for successful lupin establishment that will help future research for improving seedbed conditions.

Domestication Of Rough-Seeded Lupins, Bevan Buirchell, Wallace Cowling Jan 1992

Domestication Of Rough-Seeded Lupins, Bevan Buirchell, Wallace Cowling

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Since the beginning of civilisation, humans have been domesticating wild plants such as wheat, barley and rice. They have both conciously and unconciously selected plant types suited to cropping.

Reccently, there has been an increasing effort to domesticate a greater variety of wild plants, especially legumes.

Stubble Retention And Leaf Disease In Lupin And Cereal Crops, Mark Sweetingham, Robert Loughman, Ron Jarvis Jan 1992

Stubble Retention And Leaf Disease In Lupin And Cereal Crops, Mark Sweetingham, Robert Loughman, Ron Jarvis

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Retention of cereal stubbles can reduce leaf disease in lupins but increase leaf disease in cereals. The extent of cereal disease carry-over in stubbles depends on the locality and whether multiple cropping or crop rotation is practised
