Effects Of Dietary Calcium And Fasting On Osteoclast Recession And Recruitment In Calcium Deficient Rats, Kenneth R. Wright
Effects Of Dietary Calcium And Fasting On Osteoclast Recession And Recruitment In Calcium Deficient Rats, Kenneth R. Wright
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The osteoclast, a multinucleated giant cell, has as its role the resorption of bone matrix with consequent release of calcium. The osteoclast is thought to derive from a pluripotent stem cell which also gives rise to monocytes and macrophages. The development, activation, and inhibition of osteoclasts are influenced by a number of systemic and local factors. The release of these factors is influenced by changes in the dietary status of the animal. Calcium deficiency is known to stimulate the recruitment and activity of large numbers of osteoclasts. These osteoclasts can subsequently be inhibited by increasing dietary calcium intake. Disappearance of …
Neurophysiologic Bases For Abnormal Muscle Coactivation Patterns In Hemiparetic Stroke, Julius P.A. Dewald
Neurophysiologic Bases For Abnormal Muscle Coactivation Patterns In Hemiparetic Stroke, Julius P.A. Dewald
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
To study disturbed muscle activation patterns in hemiparetic stroke, the EMG activity in spastic-paretic and contralateral elbow muscles of 10 stroke subjects were compared during graded directionally varying voluntary isometric contractions. We observed significant shifts in the peak EMG angle and increases in the angular range of EMG activity in the impaired upper limb. Furthermore, we observed stereotypic coactivation of many muscles acting at the same joint or at different joints across all subjects.
The effect of elbow angle changes on muscle coactivation patterns was studied by examining isometric torque-angle relations under passive and active conditions in 8 stroke subjects. …

Red Butte Canyon is a protected, near pristine canyon entering Salt Lake Valley, Utah. It contains a well-developed riparian zone and a perennial stream; hillside vegetation ranges from grasslands on the lower limits to Douglas-fir and aspen stands at the upper elevations. In this paper we describe the history of human impact, natural history aspects of climate, geology, and ecology, and faunal and floral information for key species in the canyon. The role and importance of Research Natural Areas is discussed, particularly with respect to the need to protect Red Butte Canyon—one of the few remaining undisturbed riparian ecosystems in …
The R Value At Vo2 Max During Maximal Graded Exercise Treadmill Tests Of Coronary Artery Diseased And Nondiseased Subjects, Sherry S. Williams
The R Value At Vo2 Max During Maximal Graded Exercise Treadmill Tests Of Coronary Artery Diseased And Nondiseased Subjects, Sherry S. Williams
Masters Theses
This study examined the R value at VO2 max during maximal graded treadmill exercise tests to determine if it was a reliable indicator of VO2 max and could therefore be used as a test termination criterion. The subjects in this study were 160 coronary artery diseased (CAD) patients and 170 nondiseased individuals. Data were collected from existing stress test records. The R value was also analyzed to determine if proportions of diseased and nondiseased subjects were the same. The time it took 100 CAD patients to reach VO2 max and exhaustion once R rose above 1.00 was also examined.

Plasticity Of The Gnrh Neuronal System During Sexual Maturation Of The Male Djungarian Hamster, Kevin L. Buchanan
Plasticity Of The Gnrh Neuronal System During Sexual Maturation Of The Male Djungarian Hamster, Kevin L. Buchanan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Onset of puberty in male Djungarian hamsters is characterized by increased pituitary gonadotropin secretion and testes maturation, and is controlled by neurons within the brain which secrete gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Puberty is associated with increased numbers of morphologically unipolar, but not bipolar, GnRH neurons in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) and diagonal band of Broca (DBB). To test the hypothesis that delayed sexual maturation arrests this increase, males were exposed to short days or administered melatonin. Males with delayed puberty had significantly fewer unipolar GnRH neuron numbers in the MPOA and DBB comparable to pubertal controls in long days. Unipolar …
The Effect Of Electrical Stimulation Of The Dorsal Raphe Nucleus On Local Cerebral Glucose Metabolism And Epileptogenesis In The Rat, Clifford C. Douglas
The Effect Of Electrical Stimulation Of The Dorsal Raphe Nucleus On Local Cerebral Glucose Metabolism And Epileptogenesis In The Rat, Clifford C. Douglas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Anatomic connections between the dorsal raphé and the hippocampus have been described in the literature; however, the understanding of the functional importance of these connections is not complete. In these studies the "functional" raphé-hippocampal pathway was elucidated first by the 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG) method, and second by the effect of dorsal raphé electrical stimulation on kindled seizure in the rat. In the 2-DG study, differences in local rates of cerebral glucose metabolism were quantified. The pattern of 2-DG uptake differed significantly from controls (animals with electrodes placed and not receiving an electrical stimulus) and subjects stimulated in the pontine oral reticular …
Cortisol In The Ovine Fetus : Its Regulation And Role In Parturition, Ede Marie Apostolakis
Cortisol In The Ovine Fetus : Its Regulation And Role In Parturition, Ede Marie Apostolakis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In fetal sheep, circulating cortisol increase during late gestation to abruptly rise 72 hours preceding birth. Although the surge in cortisol is thought to initiate the endocrine cascade which triggers parturition, it is not known what drives the prepartum rise in fetal cortisol. The first study tested the hypothesis that basal cortisol secretion is regulated by adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) which in turn, is controlled by arginine vasopressin (AVP). The fetus challenged with AVP increased plasma ACTH and cortisol concentrations. Pretreatment with an AVP V1 receptor antagonist blocked AVP-induced plasma ACTH cortisol but failed to alter basal ACTH or cortisol. To …

We have adapted techniques developed for the extraction of DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-imbedded human tissues for use on preserved fish tissues. DNA was successfully extracted and the d-loop region of mitochondrial DNA was amplified with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The sequences of the amplified DNA from preserved and modern samples were identical. These techniques were also applied to fin tissue treated with a variety of preservatives. Extraction of DNA from ethyl alcohol and air-dried fin tissues gave yields equivalent to those from frozen tissues. Extraction of DNA from preserved museum specimens of rare or extinct taxa could significantly increase …
Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials In Anuran Amphibians, Marc Brandon Carey
Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials In Anuran Amphibians, Marc Brandon Carey
Dissertations and Theses
In this study, I looked at the effects of sound level, temperature and dehydration/hypernatremia on the brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) of four species of anuran amphibians (Rana pipiens, Rana catesbeiana, Bufo americanus and Bufo terrestris). The BAEP was used because it allowed me to monitor both the peripheral and central aspects of auditory nervous function simultaneously and over a long period of time.

Experimental Manipulations Of The Organic Chemistry Of Seawater: Implications For Studies Of Energy Budgets In Marine Invertebrate Larvae, William Jaeckle
Experimental Manipulations Of The Organic Chemistry Of Seawater: Implications For Studies Of Energy Budgets In Marine Invertebrate Larvae, William Jaeckle
Scholarship
Correct measurement of changes in biomass and metabolic rates over time are two essential elements for the accurate construction of energy budgets for invertebrate larvae. Both components of larval energetics are altered by changes in the organic chemistry of the seawater. Axenic (bacteria-free) veliger larvae (88 µm shell length) of the bivalve Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1795) had a 53% enhancement of their metabolic rate relative to control values (5.8 ± 0.6 pmol larva -1 h -1 , x¯ ± 1 SE) when exposed to seawater to which 1 µM glucose had been added. Gastrulae increased their rate of respiration by …

Electrophysiological responses to odor have been recorded for concen trations as low as 0.01 ppm for Manx shearwaters Puffinus puffinus and Black-footed Albatrosses Diomedea nigripes, indicating that relative to most birds, procellariiforms have a keen sense of smell (Wenzel and Sieck 1972, cf.clark 1991; Clark and Smeraski 1990; Clark and Mason 1989). Such acuity is not unexpected, given the extensive development of the olfactory anatomy of these species (Bang and Wenzel 1986). Field observations indi cate that Procellariiformes use their sense of smell to locate food (Grubb 1972; Hutchison and Wenzel 1980; Lequette, Verheyden and Jouventin 1989). -_ However, it …

Until recently, the discovery of avian sensory repellents has been empirical (MaRnn, AnAmR 'Inn l;qr\r FlR'l), Hm> !ilv!ilr, recent liltudilillil in our laboratory have shown that many avian repellents have similar perceptual and structural properties (Mason et al. 1989; Mason Clark and Shah 1991; Clark and Shah 1991; Clark, Shah and Mason 1991; Shah, Clark and Mason 1991). For example, methyl anthranilate, which has a grapy odor, is repel lent to birds (Kare and Pick, 1960). Ortho-aminoacetophenone has an odor and structure similar to that of methyl anthranilate, differing only in the substitution of a ketone for an ester group …
