Variation In Pappogeomys Castanops (Geomyidae) On The Llano Estacado Of Texas And New Mexico, Robert C. Dowler, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Nongeographic and geographic variation in the yellow-cheeked pocket gopher, Pappogeomys castanops, were analyzed in specimens collected in northwestern Texas and eastern New Mexico. Univariate and multivariate methods of analysis were utilized to assess variation in morphometric characters among 12 samples of P. castanops. Because of significant variation with age, only adult specimens were used in analyses. Adult males were significantly larger than females in all 13 characters studied. Our analyses of geographic variation reveal that those specimens previously assigned to the subspecies P. c. simulans are not sufficiently distinct to warrant subspecific designation.

Predation Of Upland Game And Its Management, Roger Wells Dec 1979

Predation Of Upland Game And Its Management, Roger Wells

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

There is probably no greater topic that elicits greater emotion in public wildlife discussions than that of predation. A variety of groups each with their own particular special interest surround the topic.

Some advocate complete protection of predators on the premise that their activities merely result in a "balance of nature." The opposite viewpoint argue just as strongly for the total elimination of Predators of valued wildlife in order to have greater number for man's enjoyment.

Masters Theses

The life history, behavior, and ecology of Etheostoma sagitta (Jordan and Swain) were studied in the Cumberland River system in Tennessee. Diving equipment was utilized in making observations on macrohabitat, microhabitat, distribution, seasonal and diurnal activity, feeding behavior, migration, territoriality, associated species, competition, and population density and structure. Courtship, reproductive behavior, and diurnal activity were studied primarily in an experimental raceway. Feeding behavior and territoriality were studied in the raceway and in a 77.5-1. (20-gal.) aquarium. Parasites, longevity, age and growth, ova numbers and maturation, sex ratios, and food habitats were examined in the laboratory.

Etheostoma sagitta was found in …

Concurrent Drinking By Pigeons On Fixed-Interval Reinforcement Schedules, Robert H.I. Dale Nov 1979

Concurrent Drinking By Pigeons On Fixed-Interval Reinforcement Schedules, Robert H.I. Dale

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Three experienced pigeons were exposed to at least ten consecutive 100-min sessions on each of three food-reinforced fixed-interval (FI) schedules: FI 50-sec, FI 100-sec and FI 200-sec. Water was freely available. Drinking was largely confined to the first third of each fixed interval, and the mean sessional water intake was directly related to the food-reinforcement rate for each animal. The animals drank very quickly, i.e., 3-4 ml/sec, but the drinking bouts were brief, i.e., 0.8-1.4 sec, and infrequent, i.e., 2-5/hr. The parameters describing concurrent drinking in the pigeon are strikingly different from those describing rats’ drinking under similar reinforcement schedules, …

Survey Of Vegetation And Elevational Relationships Within Coastal Marsh Transition Zones In The Central Atlantic Coastal Region : Final Report, John D. Boon, Donna M. E. Ware, Gene M. Silberhorn

Reports

This report contains the findings of a one-year botanical field study of the marsh to uplands vegetational transition zone at selected sites within the Central Atlantic Coastal Region of the United States. The latter region is herein defined to include the coasts of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. To obtain results representative of the various coastal environments and associated wetlands types found within this region, five primary sites and one to four secondary sites in the vicinity of each primary site were chosen for detailed investigations.

Structure Of A Subtidal Benthic Community Near Cape Charles, Virginia, R. Michael Ewing Oct 1979

Structure Of A Subtidal Benthic Community Near Cape Charles, Virginia, R. Michael Ewing

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Species composition, distribution, and abundance of benthic invertebrates of a subtidal community were examined at a location on the lower Delmarva Peninsula near Cape Charles, Virginia. Macrobenthos was sampled quarterly between June, 1977 and June, 1978 at nine sites along a transect in Old Plantation Creek and the adjacent offshore area. Spatial and temporal patterns of numerically important species are discussed.

Sampling sites and species were grouped by a numerical classification strategy which consisted of the Bray-Curtis similarity measure and group-average clustering. Three faunal assemblages were identified with the aid of constancy and fidelity nodal analyses: (1) a tidal creek …

Morphology And Distribution Of Petiolar Nectaries In Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler, Robert B. Kaul Sep 1979

Morphology And Distribution Of Petiolar Nectaries In Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler, Robert B. Kaul

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The distribution of petiolar nectaries in 24 species of Ipomoea was investigated. Petiolar nectaries were found on 12 species (8 new reports, 4 confirmations of previous reports) and quoted from the literature as being found on 3 other species; they were absent from 9 species investigated. The structure of petiolar nectaries in the genus ranges from simple beds of superficial nectar-secreting trichomes (1 species), to slightly recessed "basin nectaries" (8 species), to "crypt nectaries," which are structurally the most complex extrafloral nectaries known (3 species). (Structures were not determined for 3 species.) Petiolar nectaries are present in all subgenera, but …

Distributional Ecology Of Vegetation In The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau, California, John A. Rosario Aug 1979

Distributional Ecology Of Vegetation In The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau, California, John A. Rosario

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Interpool distribution studies of 10 vernal pools on the Santa Rosa Plateau found area to be the best single predictor of species richness in each type of regression model evaluated. Area predicted most accurately in a mixed linear-curvilinear regression model (y = a + b log x). Area appeared to reflect ecologic diversity, because multiple linear regression models provided better predictions of species richness using combinations of physical characteristics which excluded area from the regression equation. In addition, species turnover was demonstrated in a single vernal pool that was evaluated.

Intrapool distribution was studied along a soil moisture/microtopographic gradient in …

Plant Response Parameters To General Patton's Armored Maneuvers In The Eastern Mojave Desert Of California, Randall J. Iwasiuk Aug 1979

Plant Response Parameters To General Patton's Armored Maneuvers In The Eastern Mojave Desert Of California, Randall J. Iwasiuk

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study, which was undertaken from September, 1977 through June, 1978 was to survey the response of perennial vegetation to General Patton's World War II armored maneuvers. This information will be used to help construct a basis for predicting recovery rates on the effects of off-road vehicle impacts in the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA). These impacts were assessed in three usage categories: tank tracks in the maneuvers areas; roadways, which were used primarily by jeeps and trucks; and tent areas, cleared areas in which tents and other semi-permanent structures were erected. The data generated from these …

Effects Of Fraser Fir Death On Population Dynamics In Southern Appalachian Boreal Ecosystems, Rex Randall Boner Aug 1979

Effects Of Fraser Fir Death On Population Dynamics In Southern Appalachian Boreal Ecosystems, Rex Randall Boner

Masters Theses

High elevation fir and spruce-fir forests of the Southern Appalachians were sampled in the Black Mountains, North Carolina and in the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee and North Carolina. Both absolute and relative data were collected on the composition of the overstory and understory strata; the ground cover stratum was sampled for relative data. Both stands infested by the balsam woolly aphid and un-infested stands were sampled to determine the effects of the opened canopy caused by the death of Fraser fir on the population dynamics of these boreal ecosystems. Comparison of stand composition and use of correlation and regression analysis …

Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The River Otter (Lutra Canadensis) In Ditches Of The Great Dismal Swamp, Ronnie M. Pierce

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

To determine the seasonal feeding habits of the river otter (Lutra canadensis) in the Great Dismal Swamp 209 scats were collected, from May 1977 to May 1978, and analyzed for content. Remains of crayfish were found with a frequency of occurrence of 82% while fish remains occurred in 62% of the scat. This is in direct contrast to previous studies (from other areas) which found fish with a greater frequency than crayfish. Fish consumption was believed to increase during periods of low water or low temperatures. Sunfish were represented most frequently and may be the preferred fish. Amphiuma remains …

Search Image Formation In The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alexandra T. Pietrewicz, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Blue jays trained to detect Catocala moths in slides were exposed to two types of slide series containing these moths: series of one species and series of two species intermixed. In one species series, detection ability increased with successive encounters with one prey type. No similar effect occurred in two species series. These results are a direct demonstration of a specific search image.

The Density, Distribution, And Activity Patterns Of Woodchucks In Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cathy A. Taylor

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to delineate certain population characteristics and behavioral aspects of the woodchuck (Marmota monax) in the southeastern extremity of its range. Random quadrants from a grid system of the Cades Cove area, GSMNP, were systematically searched for active woodchuck burrow systems during the summers of 1976, 1977, and 1978. All burrow systems, topographical features, and buildings were marked on a scaled drawing and various burrow dimensions and land usage were recorded. Twice weekly between 7 July 1977 and 11 July 1978, observations were made of woodchucks to assess behavioral responses to the environment. …
