Species Richness Gradients Of Oak Forest Plants Along The Missouri River In Nebraska And Iowa, Steven B. Rolfsmeier Dec 1989

Species Richness Gradients Of Oak Forest Plants Along The Missouri River In Nebraska And Iowa, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The upland deciduous forests of the Missouri River valley contain many plants typical of forests to the east of this area, which are assumed to have migrated northward and westward along the river in postglacial times. Previous workers have reported a gradient of decreasing species richness upstream among woody species, which is suggested to be the result of climatic gradients and differential dispersal capabilities of the immigrant species. Floristic work on all vascular species in eight woodland sites along the Nebraska-Iowa border quantifies the presence of similar gradients for herbaceous species, but of differing degrees. These studies also reveal the …

Tidal Flat Ecology: An Experimental Approach To Species Interactions By K. Riess, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D. Sep 1989

Tidal Flat Ecology: An Experimental Approach To Species Interactions By K. Riess, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D.

Faculty Works: CERCOM

A periodic pause to intensely observe a singularly unique ecosystem sharpens one's awareness of this diverse world of ours, especially, as the author notes, if one observes a transitional ecosystem whose ecological treasures are hidden or maybe obscured by a tidal sediment's resemblance to a large, rotten cheese! "It smells, is slimy and sticky, is punched with holes and crowded with various worms." Sounds good to me! Reise's "pause" encompasses 10 years in which he investigated the Wadden Sea mudflats near the border between West Germany and Denmark. He uses this site to discuss the biotic and abiotic interactions within …

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Proposed Rule To Determine The Pallid Sturgeon To Be An Endangered Species

Endangered Species Bulletin

The Service proposes to determine the pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) to be an endangered species under the authority of the Endangered Species Act (Act) of 1973, as amended. The pallid sturgeon is a large fish known only to occur in the Missouri River, the Mississippi River downstream of the Missouri River, and the lower Yellowstone River. The species is threatened through habitat modification and apparent lack of reproduction. Numbers of fish reported have declined dramatically in the last two decades. Past commercial utilization likely exceeded biological recruitment. Pollution may be a problem over much of its range, and …

Winchester Sub-Catchment Management Plan, Vivian T. Read Aug 1989

Winchester Sub-Catchment Management Plan, Vivian T. Read

Soil conservation survey collection

The 590 Ha Winchester sub-catchment has no apparent external drainage. Groundwater levels are rising causing site specific problems. Wind erosion has severely affected some areas. The objective of this report is to provide a sub-catchment management plan that is based on sustainable agricultural systems and a hydrological equilibrium. The recommendations aim to meet this objective in the long term. Recommendations to achieve short term results are considered separately. These measures have relatively high installation and maintenance costs. They should be considered as interim management methods until the recommendations for long-term control become effective (perhaps 3 - 5 years after implementation).

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Determination Of Endangered Status For The American Burying Beetle

Endangered Species Bulletin

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determines the American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) to be an endangered species under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as amended, Once widely distributed throughout eastern North America, thi8 species has disappeared from most of its former range. Two known populations currently exist, one In eastern Oklahoma and the other on an Island off the coast of New England. Despite extensive efforts to locate additional populations, only two specimens have been found elsewhere in more than ten years. The cause of the species’ decline is unknown. Critical habitat …

The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program: Two Year Progress Report, Mary Clausen, Mike Fritz, Gerry Steinauer Jun 1989

The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program: Two Year Progress Report, Mary Clausen, Mike Fritz, Gerry Steinauer

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Since European settlement, human activities have totally eliminated the natural vegetation from approximately 50 percent of Nebraska’s landscape, and of that remaining most has been heavily impacted. As a result, numerous plants and animals have been extirpated from the state and many others are threatened.

The destruction of Nebraska’s natural diversity resulted in both public and private conservation groups recognizing the need for a centralized and accessible biological database for the state’s rare species and natural community types. Toward this end, the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NENHP) was established in August, 1987 through a cooperative effort between The Nature Conservancy …

Wolf Population Survival In An Area Of High Road Density, L. David Mech Apr 1989

Wolf Population Survival In An Area Of High Road Density, L. David Mech

USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center

Wolf mortality in a high-road-density area of Minnesota exceeds that in an adjacent wilderness, and is primarily human-caused. The wolf population there is maintained primarily by ingress from the adjacent wilderness areas. A road density of 0.58 km/km2 can be exceeded and the area still support wolves if it is adjacent to extensive roadless areas.

Land Capability And Land Use In The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Region, Peter John Tille, Neil Lantzke

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste region is one of Western Australia's most beautiful areas. Located in the far south-west corner of the State, it is a popular scenis and tourist spot, as well as supporting grazing, horticultureal and viticultural enterprises.

Outside of perth the region is the most popular tourist destination in the state. It is also responsible for about a quarter of the State's milk production, and 15 percent of the state's potato production and a quarter of the State's wine grapes.

Many new agricultural enterprises have opened up in the past 15 years, and the population has increased by almost 40 …

Endemismus In Der Flora Der Mongolei, V. I. Grubov

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
