Blue crab is a species of crab commonly found in the waters of the western Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most important shellfish in the Chesapeake Bay. The blue crab fishing industry has a notable impact on the local economy, and blue crabs form a key link in the Chesapeake Bay food web. Much about the movement and habits of marine animals is still unknown. This information can be found for terrestrial animals through direct observation or video surveillance; however, these optical methods are not effective in aquatic environments. To circumvent this problem, researchers “tag” aquatic animals with small sensor systems that record data about the animals movements. The researchers then recover the tag and use signal analysis to draw conclusions about the habits of the animal. Physical Modeling Of Vortical Cross-Step Filtration In The Oral Cavity Of American Paddlefish (Polyodon Spathula), Hannah Brooks

This thesis explores the filter-feeding mechanisms of the American paddlefish, Polyodon spathula. The data indicate that paddlefish use a filtration method termed cross-step filtration, which utilizes vortices formed behind the branchial arches by the incoming water flow. Videos of these vortices were obtained and quantified for the first time inside the oral cavities of preserved paddlefish. Since the paddlefish can move the branchial arches within the oral cavity, the effects of changing branchial arch angle on vortex characteristics were studied in 3D models. Goldfish (Carassius auratus) are known to be suspension-feeders that use crossflow filtration to filter out extremely small food particles from the water. In this study, I investigated whether goldfish could feed on low-density food particles and also tried to identify any feeding behaviors or morphological traits that could be involved in this mechanism. I conducted feeding experiments with various novel and familiar food types that were followed up by gut content analysis to confirm ingestion of the low-density particles. Lionfish (genus Pterois) are a carnivorous, venomous fish native to the Indo-Pacific that are now invasive in the Western Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. They are extremely adaptable, eat a wide variety of native fish species, and are prolific breeders. The rapid infiltration of lionfish into native reef ecosystems have caused the invasion to be recognized as one of the world’s top conservation issues.
