Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay : Annual Progress Report : 2015-2016, Christopher D. Davis, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey

Reports

The 2015 Striped Bass juvenile abundance index was 12.00 and was not significantly greater than the historic average of 8.63. Compared with their respective historic averages abundance indices from individual rivers in 2015 varied, such that significantly higher recruitment was observed in the Rappahannock River and average recruitment was observed in the James and York rivers. Relatively higher catches of young‐of‐the‐year Striped Bass at upriver and downriver auxiliary sites suggest expansion of Striped Bass nursery grounds in 2015. Unlike Striped Bass in Virginia waters, juvenile White Perch abundance indices in 2015 were significantly greater than the historic average for this …

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay : Annual Progress Report : 2014-2015, Christopher D. Davis, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey

Reports

The 2014 Striped Bass juvenile abundance index was 11.30 and was not significantly higher than the historic average of 8.56. Abundance indices from individual rivers in 2014 varied compared with their respective historic averages, and significantly higher recruitment was observed in the York and Rappahannock rivers. Average recruitment occurred in the James River. Increased catches of young‐of‐the‐year Striped Bass at upriver and downriver auxiliary sites suggest an expansion of Striped Bass nursery grounds in 2014. Similar to Striped Bass, juvenile White Perch abundance indices in 2014 were above the historic average for this species. A weak year class for Atlantic …

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay : Annual Progress Report : January 2013-December 2013, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey, Christopher D. Davis

Reports

The 2013 Striped Bass juvenile abundance index was 10.94 and was significantly higher than the historic average of 7.04. Abundance indices from individual rivers varied compared with their respective historic averages, and significantly higher recruitment was observed in the York River (particularly the Mattaponi River). Average recruitment occurred in the other rivers. Increased catches of young‐of‐the‐year Striped Bass at upriver and downriver auxiliary sites suggest an expansion of Striped Bass nursery grounds in 2013. The evident increase in occurrence of young‐of‐the‐year Striped Bass throughout the tidal tributaries in Virginia further supports the observation of an above‐average recruitment year in 2013. …

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay, January 2012-December 2012 : Annual Progress Report, Leonard S. Machut, Mary C. Fabrizio

Reports

The 2012 Striped Bass juvenile abundance index is 2.68 and is significantly lower than the historic average of 6.96. Recruitment failure, as defined by Addendum II to Amendment 6 of the FMP, occurred during 2012. All individual watershed JAI values were below their historic mean. The Rappahannock, Pamunkey and Chickahominy River JAI values were significantly lower than their respective historic averages. Although lower JAI values were reported for the James and Mattaponi rivers, annual JAI confidence intervals overlapped with historic confidence intervals suggesting juvenile abundance in these two rivers was not significantly different from the longterm average abundance. Based on …

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay, January 2011-December 2011 : Annual Progress Report, Leonard S. Machut, Mary C. Fabrizio

Reports

The 2011 striped bass juvenile abundance index is 27.09 and is significantly higher than the historic average of 7.92. Unlike previous years, the 2011 York River index was the highest among Virginia watersheds with high recruitment in both the Pamunkey and Mattaponi rivers. All individual river JAI values were significantly higher than their respective historic averages except for the Chickahominy River which was not significantly different from its historic average. This suggests a strong year class was produced in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay in 2011. Sampling of auxiliary stations provides greater spatial coverage of the nursery grounds and …

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay, January 2009-December 2009 : Annual Progress Report, Leonard S. Machut, Mary C. Fabrizio

Reports

The 2009 striped bass juvenile abundance index is 8.42 and is not significantly different from the historic average of 7.54. Additional methods of calculating the regional index support this conclusion. Catches in the York River were nearly identical to its historic average. Although the James River catches were higher and the Rappahannock River catches were lower than historic averages, they were not significantly so. Striped bass catches at auxiliary stations provide greater spatial coverage of the nursery grounds and suggest that juvenile striped bass were broadly distributed throughout the sampling area in 2009.

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay, January 2008-December 2008 : Annual Progress Report, Leonard S. Machut, Mary C. Fabrizio

Reports

The 2008 striped bass juvenile abundance index is 7.97 and is not significantly different from the historic average of 7.51. Additional methods of calculating the regional index support this conclusion. Catches in the James River were significantly higher than it’s historic average and offset the significantly lower catches recorded in the York River. The 2008 Rappahannock River index is not significantly different from the historic average. Striped bass catches at auxiliary stations provide greater spatial coverage of the nursery grounds and suggest that juvenile striped bass were broadly distributed throughout the sampling area in 2008.

The primary objective of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science juvenile striped bass survey is to monitor the relative annual recruitment success of juvenile striped bass in the major Virginia nursery areas of lower Chesapeake Bay. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initially funded the survey from 1967 to 1973. After a hiatus ending in 1980, funds were provided by the National Marine Fisheries Service under the Emergency Striped Bass Study program. Commencing with the 1988 annual survey, the work was jointly supported by Wallop-Breaux funds (Sport Fish Restoration Act) administered through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the …
