The development of commercial aquaculture of a non-endemic species such as silver perch raises a number of important issues relating to translocation. These include the potential of the introduced species to: impact on genetic diversity; introduce disease; and impact on - the natural environment; and - the biodiversity of native species. This Management Paper has been drafted in liaison with the Department of Environmental Protection in accordance with the principles of rish assessment, taking into account the above issues. Floyd Bennett Field (FBF), 579 ha in extent, is a division of Gateway National Recreation Area. It is the site of a former airfield, constructed by filling salt marshes with dredged materials. Except for the portion known locally as the “North Forty,” all sections of FBF have been cut over to maintain low vegetation. A grassland management plan (GRAMP) for 165 ha was initiated in 1986, to maintain habitats for open-country birds. Abstract.—Over 6,000 black crappies Pomoxis nigromaculatus and white crappies P. annularis were tagged in five lakes and reservoirs to quantify size selectivity of angling. Total length of fish tagged ranged from 20.0 to 39.8 cm; fish caught by anglers ranged from 20.0 to 38.8 cm. Return rates were low at lengths near 20 cm, increased gradually to a peak between 26 and 32 cm, and decreased for longer fish. This pattern was consistent among the five lakes and reservoirs and did not differ between species. Observed size-selective exploitation resulted in the lopsided removal of intermediate age-classes, thereby simulating a reversed …

Prioritization of taxa has become a necessity due to limited resources available for conservation. Conservation efforts are often concentrated on those threatened and endangered species with the highest taxonomic importance. The silver pike is a rare game fish, often accounting for less than 1% of a total pike population where it is found. Although silver pike are normally found in association with northern pike, they have distinct morphological characteristics and have not been shown to hybridize with the northern pike. Still, many fisheries biologists consider the silver pike to be a color variant of the northern pike, and to date …
