The Economic History Of The Fisheries Of The Eastern Shore Of Virginia, John B. Pleasants Jun 1971

The Economic History Of The Fisheries Of The Eastern Shore Of Virginia, John B. Pleasants

Reports

The economic history of the Eastern Shore has been greatly affected by both its natural characteristics and its location. Each has had both good and bad effects, with the very advantages carrying with them serious disadvantages in a bewildering juxtaposition. For instance, the sea and bay provide a boundless resource of commercially desirable species, yet lead to isolation from major markets of the area. The very isolation 0£ the Eastern Shore and its low population density lessens the possibility of pollution, thus preserving the environment on which estuarine animals are dependent. (...)

Nearshore Bottom Currents Off Virginia Beach, Virginia, Morris L. Brehmer May 1971

Nearshore Bottom Currents Off Virginia Beach, Virginia, Morris L. Brehmer

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science instituted a study of the nearshore currents in the Atlantic Ocean off Virginia Beach, Virginia in December 1967 under Contract No. NAOSU P-68-1595 and continued under Contract DACW-65-69-C-0019 _through March 1970. The program was designed to determine the'net current patterns in the area and attempted to determine the physical parameters responsible. The net current patterns determined could then be utilized to determine the fate of dredge spoil material discharged from hopper dredges at a disposal site located in the vicinity of latitude 36 ° 48', longitude 75° 54', ·or 3 nautical miles offshore.

Bibliography On The Scyphozoa With Selected References On Hydrozoa And Anthozoa, Dale R. Calder, Harold N. Cones, Edwin B. Joseph

Reports

Our goal in assembling this bibliography has been to bring together literature references on all aspects of scyphozoan research. Compilation was begun in 1967 as a card file of references to publications on the Scyphozoa; selected references to hydrozoan and anthozoan studies that were considered relevant to the study of scyphozoans were included. In 1968, a major research program on the jellyfish of Chesapeake Bay was initiated at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) under Dr. E. B. Joseph, and work on the bibliography became an integral part of the program. In 1969 we began converting the bibliography into …

Some Sociological Perspectives On The Formation And Operation Of Commerical Fishery Cooperatives, Victor Ligouri Jan 1971

Some Sociological Perspectives On The Formation And Operation Of Commerical Fishery Cooperatives, Victor Ligouri

Reports

This report is intended to present a range of sociological perspectives: problems, questions pertaining to the formation and operation of cooperatives for and by commercial fishermen. It is a preliminary report which does not duplicate those discussions in publications specifically concerned with cooperatives (included in the selected bibliography), but rather offers themes and generalizations which I hope will prove useful, subject to criticism and discussion with staff members of VIMS. The first part of the report concerns planning the formation of a cooperative, with emphasis upon problems which have been encountered elsewhere.

Feasibility Of Increasing Striped Bass Populations By Stocking Of Underutilized Nursery Grounds : Annual Progress Report 1970-1971, George C. Grant, John V. Merriner

Reports

Numerous estuaries in the lower Chesapeake Bay region and coastal Virginia posseS3physical, chemical and biological properties favorable to their use as nursery grounds for striped bass .. Many of them, however, are not so utilized because of the absence of associated spawning grounds. This project was designed to investigate the feasibility of stocking such underutilized nursery grounds as a management device, while monitoring population parameters such as age composition, mortality rates and relative abundance of yearclasses.

Estimation Of Parameters Of Striped Bass Populations And Description Of The Fishery Of Lower Chesapeake Bay: Final Report, George C. Grant Jan 1970

Estimation Of Parameters Of Striped Bass Populations And Description Of The Fishery Of Lower Chesapeake Bay: Final Report, George C. Grant

Reports

The present project was proposed after review of results from the Chesapeake Bay Cooperative Striped Bass Program (Mansueti, 1961; Massmann and Pacheco, 1961; Lewis, 1961) and following the suggestions for further research of Sykes (1961). Our proposal included five principal objectives: -1) to estimate the seasonal age composition of striped bass stocks in lower Chesapeake Bay, 2) to determine the age selectivity of fishing gear types employed in Virginia coastal waters, 3) to measure the proportion of total catch taken by each type of fishing gear, including the sport catch, 4) to estimate mortality rates for striped bass during their …

Reports

Grab samples at 31 stations in the Hog Island region of the James River to evaluate the benthic fauna. All species of infauna taken were identified and weighed. Sediment particle size analysis was made at each station. This region is characterized by a low diversity. The dominant organism, Rangia cuneata, may occur in densities up to l,000/m2. Other organisms common to the area are Congeria leucophaeata, Scolecoleides viridis, Corophium lacustre, Leptocheirus plumulosus and Cyathura polita.

Laboratory studies werb made to determine the effects of temperature shock on oyster! larvae, Crassostrea virginica. 10° and 15° temperature shocks were used. Growth …

Biology And Utilization Of Anadromous Alosids: Annual Progress Report (October 1, 1968 - September 30, 1969, Jackson Davis, Joseph P. Miller, J. Ernest Warriner

Reports

Estimates of average annual mortality rates were derived. from the decline in numbers of repeat river herring spawners each year. in the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers. The 1961 year-class contributed slightly more than 6 million fish to the fishery since 1965 while the 1962 year-class contributed nearly 5 million fish. Estimates could not be made for the James and York Rivers because the catch could not be measured. Fishing effort generally declined from 1968 in all major rivers with the Potomac River exhibiting the greatest decline. The catch of river herring in 1969 was generally lower than in 1968. Shad …

A Multidisciplinary Study Of The Scyphozoan Jellyfishes Of Lower Chesapeake Bay, 1 July 1968 - 30 June 1969, Edwin B. Joseph

Reports

At the beginning of the fiscal year covered by this report the scope of the present study was restricted to an ecological consideration of the jellyfish, Chrysaora quinquecirrha. During the winter of 1968 the project proposal was amended broadly to include physiological, biochemical and developmental aspects and the taxonomic base was expanded to include the clover leaf jellyfish Aurelia aurita and the lions mane jellyfish Cyanea capillata.

It was not possible to initiate those physiological and developmental aspects that required the medusae of the two summer species until the last month covered by this report. However some activities on all …

Treatment Of Shell With Polystream To Increase Survival Of Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) In Virginia, Dexter S. Haven, James P. Whitcomb Jan 1969

Treatment Of Shell With Polystream To Increase Survival Of Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) In Virginia, Dexter S. Haven, James P. Whitcomb

Reports

Survival of oysters set on shells treated with Polystream* was investigated during 1963 and 1964. Treated and control shells were held in wire bags in the high-salinity intertidal seaside area of the Eastern Shore and in the moderate-salinity subtidal areas of the lower James River. Significantly more spat survived on treated shells than on controls. Differences in survival could not be attributed to absence of drill predation on treated shell.
