Aquaculture in The Gambia is dominated by the production of tilapia in ponds in the rice-producing Central River Region of the country with project funding through international donors. There is one shrimp farm in the country, originally financed by Swedish investors focusing on production of the exotic Penaeus monodon, but after a decade of production operations ceased due to poor profitability. Experimental culture of mangrove oysters Crassostrea tulipa and blood ark cockles, Senilia senilis are being conducted by women shellfishers in the Tanbi wetlands estuary neal the capital city of Banjul and in Kartong along the southwestern coast.
