This document provides a discussion of the biology and management of exotic rangeland weeds which are a threat to native ecosystems of the western United States. Chapter 1 describes a generalized approach for managing noxious weed infested rangeland, while Chapter 2 focuses on preventing noxious weed invasion. In some cases, noxious weeds readily invade riparian areas, and because of the sensitive nature of these ecosystems Chapter 3 is devoted to riparian weed management. The following 13 chapters describe the identification, origin, history, distribution, potential invasion, impacts, biology and ecology, and management of specific noxious rangeland weeds.

Provisional annual indices of juvenile abundance have been generated from trawl survey data for six species of key recreational importance in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay (spot, croaker, weakfish, summer flounder, black sea bass and striped bass) and two species of secondary importance (scup and white perch) for the period 1988-1993. No species has shown a continuous trend during the six year period. Spot has shown the largest decline from a high geometric mean catch per trawl of 68 (1988) to a low (1992) of 2, recovering to 9. 7 in 1993. Atlantic croaker continued to decline reaching levels …

This report summarizes data collected by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) monthly trawl survey cruises for January-December 1986. The trawl survey is a long term, broad scope monitoring program. Its present primary goal is to produce annual indices of juvenile (young-of-year) abundance of commercially, recreationally and ecologically important marine and estuarine finfish and crustaceans. The objective is to provide indices of sufficient accuracy and precision for both immediate resource management needs and long-term understanding of environmental influences of fishery resources. The identification and life cycle of the alfalfa weevil are discussed along with scouting techniques, economic thresholds, and other integrated pest management tactics.

The alfalfa weevil is the primary insect pest of alfalfa in Nebraska. Management is essential to reduce crop losses, particularly during years when weevil infestation is high. Because there also are years when weevil damage is economically unimportant, it is necessary for growers to become familiar with sampling procedures, management guidelines, and control recommendations so control techniques are not used unnecessarily.

The identification of and disease cycle of wheat scab is described along with its management. Guidelines for using wheat contaminated with vomitoxin also are included.

Scab or Fusarium head blight is an important disease of wheat, barley, oats, rye and wheatgrasses. Scab manifests itself by the premature death or blighting of spikelets in the wheat head. Direct yield losses are often minor, but can be higher than 50 percent in severely infected fields. The economic significance is magnified by the possibility that the low quality, shriveled grain also can become contaminated by mycotoxins (e.g. vomitoxin, zearalenone).
