The Isolation Of Ecdysterone Inducible Genes By Hybridization Subtraction Chromatography, Michael P. Vitek, Susan G. Kreissman, Robert H. Gross
The Isolation Of Ecdysterone Inducible Genes By Hybridization Subtraction Chromatography, Michael P. Vitek, Susan G. Kreissman, Robert H. Gross
Dartmouth Scholarship
We have developed a procedure for selectively enriching a mRNA population for inducible sequences. Other than the induced mRNA species, the population of mRNA in control cells is approximately the same as the mRNA population in induced cells. Cytoplasmic mRNA from control cells is bound to oligo (dT)-cellulose and used as a template for reverse transcriptase, the oligo (dT) serving as a primer. After removing the template mRNAs, the cDNA-cellulose column is used to hybridize a population of mRNAs from induced cells. The non-hybridized poly A + RNAs are greatly enriched in the inducible sequences. We have used this technique …
Functional Relationship Between Parts Of The Replication Region Of Plasmid Cole1., Joseph Inselburg
Functional Relationship Between Parts Of The Replication Region Of Plasmid Cole1., Joseph Inselburg
Dartmouth Scholarship
The inhibition of plasmid ColE1 replication caused by a deletion of the ColE1 plasmid replication origin has been previously reported (T. Hashimoto-Gotoh and J. Inselburg, J. Bacteriol. 139:597-619). Evidence is presented showing that restoration of the deleted nucleotide sequence in the precise relationship it normally has to the rest of the replication region is essential for restoration of ColE1 replication capability to the deletion mutant.

G79-477 Beef Herd Management Calendar, Paul Q. Guyer
G79-477 Beef Herd Management Calendar, Paul Q. Guyer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication contains a brief outline of management practices to be followed at various stages of the cow's reproductive cycle or at various times of the year.
Good management is the key to a successful beef production program. A high capital requirement and a relatively low return emphasize the need for effective management to maximize the profit potential of beef cows.

How Teachers Of High School Biology May Introduce Heredity And Birds Through The Use Of Doves, Donald Hood Dickinson
How Teachers Of High School Biology May Introduce Heredity And Birds Through The Use Of Doves, Donald Hood Dickinson
Graduate Student Research Papers
It was the purpose of this study (1) to present a method of teaching principles of heredity at a level understandable to students of a high school biology class, (2) to present a list of resource materials for use in a heredity unit, and (3) to show how the use of live animals might intensify student interest in this subject as well as in other phases of bird life such as nest building, incubation of eggs, hatching of eggs, voice and communication, and effects of nutrition on chick development.
Genetic Studies Of Winter Hardiness In Barley, C. R. Rohde, C. F. Pulham
Genetic Studies Of Winter Hardiness In Barley, C. R. Rohde, C. F. Pulham
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
An important obstacle toward the development of winter barley varieties with a higher level of winter hardiness has been the deficiency of genetic information on this character. The primary objective of these studies was to obtain information on the genetics of the winter hardiness of a group of 18 winter barley varieties which originated from widely different geographic areas of the world. It was hoped that this information might be helpful in determining whether or not it would be possible for barley breeders to combine different genetic sources of winter hardiness and attain a higher level of hardiness than presently …
Poultry Progress: How Long Should A Chicken Live?, F. E. Mussehl
Poultry Progress: How Long Should A Chicken Live?, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Increased laying flock mortality has disturbed thoughtful hatcherymen, producers, processors, and research workers for several years, and very properly so, because hens which die before their time serve no useful purpose, except to raise in our minds the question, "Why?"
Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder
Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The 1929 report of the Storrs Egg Laying Contest, which has been conducted at Storrs, Connecticut, twenty-one years, shows that the best pen of ten hens entered laid 2,802 eggs, and the poorest pen laid 829 eggs. In the best pen the average egg production per hen was 280, 2 eggs as compared with 82.9 eggs per bird in the poorest pen. Why did the one pen lay so many eggs, and the other so few? This prompts us to try to find out what factors are responsible for the number of eggs a hen lays in the course of …
The Immediate Effect Of Gametic Relationship And Of Parental Type Upon The Kernel Weight Of Corn, T. A. Kiesselbach
The Immediate Effect Of Gametic Relationship And Of Parental Type Upon The Kernel Weight Of Corn, T. A. Kiesselbach
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
This investigation to determine the relation of the kernel weight of corn to the source of pollen with which it was fertilized has been made to answer several questions of both practical and technical interest: (1) To what extent is kernel weight affected in the current crop by the "breadth of breeding" or the gametic relationship? (2) What is the relation of the diversity of parental type to the immediate effect of foreign pollen upon the kernel weight of corn? (3) Is the immediate effect of cross-fertilization upon the kernel weight of sufficient importance to justify the annual mixing of …
