Inter-Primer Binding Site (Ipbs) Retrotransposon Markers Provide Insights Into Thegenetic Diversity And Population Structure Of Carrots (Daucus, Apiaceae), Mehtap Yildiz, Carlos Arbizu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Studies of genetic diversity and population structure are essential as an initial step in conservation and breeding programs for modern crops. Carrot (Daucus spp.) is among the ten most important vegetables worldwide, however, its genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships are not totally deciphered. Here, we explored the utility of 21 inter-primer binding site (iPBS) retrotransposon markers to determine the genetic diversity and population structure of 38 accessions of Daucus and one accession of a related genus. The manual scoring revealed 309 bands based on their presence/absence. The dendrogram based on the UPGMA clustering algorithm and a principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) …

Genotyping Of Prolactin, Kappa Casein, And Pituitary Transcription Factor 1 Genes Of The Anatolian Water Buffalo Population In The Kızılırmak Delta, Emi̇ne Toparslan, Levent Mercan Jan 2019

Genotyping Of Prolactin, Kappa Casein, And Pituitary Transcription Factor 1 Genes Of The Anatolian Water Buffalo Population In The Kızılırmak Delta, Emi̇ne Toparslan, Levent Mercan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Thirty-five Anatolian water buffalo were selected from among a total of almost 7000 animals from 11 herds in the Kızılırmak Delta, which is known to be one of the most important areas for water buffalo farming in Turkey. The cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences (CAPS) method was used to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms at 3 loci that are associated with milk production, namely PRL, CSN3, and PIT-1, which are associated with milk processing and milk yields, respectively. Sequence-tagged sites of PRL, CSN3, and PIT-1 were digested by restriction endonucleases RsaI, HindIII, and HinfI, respectively. Capillary electrophoretic analysis identified all samples as belonging …

Genetic Basis Of Variation For Within-Boll Yield Components In Cotton, Imtiaz Ali, Amir Shakeel, Asif Ali, Bushra Sadia Jan 2016

Genetic Basis Of Variation For Within-Boll Yield Components In Cotton, Imtiaz Ali, Amir Shakeel, Asif Ali, Bushra Sadia

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Cotton productivity on a per-hectare basis is low in Pakistan. As boll is the basis for seed cotton yield, within-boll yield components can potentially serve as the most basic determinants of cotton productivity on a per unit land area basis. Before attempting the improvement of any trait, it is necessary to know the genetic mechanism lying behind its inheritance. The current study aimed to estimate the genetic basis of within-boll yield components in cotton. The research trials were conducted at the research area of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Epistasis was found to …

The Impact Of Genomics And Genetics On Wheat Quality Improvement, John Snape, Lesley Fish, David Leader, Robert Bradburne, Adrian Turner Jan 2005

The Impact Of Genomics And Genetics On Wheat Quality Improvement, John Snape, Lesley Fish, David Leader, Robert Bradburne, Adrian Turner

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This paper discusses how genetic and genomic tools may be used to understand the genetical and molecular control of cereal quality and to develop tools for its manipulation by conventional and genetic engineering approaches. Comprehensive genetic maps are a first step in the genetical and molecular analysis of traits and these now allow the dissection of the genetical control of complex traits. As an example, data on the genetical control of grain protein content in UK winter wheats is presented. From a series of field trials, several potentially useful new QTLs were identified on chromosomes 2B, 5D, 6A, 6B, 7A …

Genetics And Some Aging-Related Mechanisms, Şükran Çakir Jan 2000

Genetics And Some Aging-Related Mechanisms, Şükran Çakir

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Aging can be defined as the time-dependent decline of physiological functions of an organism. Aging, a multifactorial process composed of both genetic and environmental components, is a highly complex biologic phenomenon of great importance. The details of the mechanisms leading to aging are not yet known. All changes in the process of aging have a cellular basis, and perhaps aging should be studied, fundamantally, at the cellular level under defined and controlled environmental conditions. Some genetic approaches have promise for the understanding of this multifactorial process. In this review, some causal hypotheses related to oxidative damage, caloric restriction, mitochondrial mutations, …

On The Polymorphic Meadow Spittlebug, Philaenus Spumarius (L.) (Homoptera: Cercopidae), Selçuk Yurtsever Jan 2000

On The Polymorphic Meadow Spittlebug, Philaenus Spumarius (L.) (Homoptera: Cercopidae), Selçuk Yurtsever

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Due to its interesting biological aspects, the meadow spittlebug Philaenus spumarius has received great attention from biologists for decades. It has been one of the extensively studied species in ecology and genetics. This homopteran insect shows very high habitat diversity and therefore has a wide global distribution. Adults exhibit a heritable colour/pattern polymorphism on the dorsal surface throughout its range. A similar colour/pattern variation also occurs in certain ventral parts. Recent laboratory studies have dealt with its polyandrous aspect that is, females may mate several times with different males and the offspring of a single female may be fathered, therefore, …
