Freshwater lakes are home to bacterial communities with 1000s of interdependent species. Numerous high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequence surveys have provided insight into the microbial taxa found within these waters. Prior surveys of Lake Michigan waters have identified bacterial species common to freshwater lakes as well as species likely introduced from the urban environment. We cultured bacterial isolates from samples taken from the Chicago nearshore waters of Lake Michigan in an effort to look more closely at the genetic diversity of species found there within. Objectives
Dental calculus is among the richest known sources of ancient DNA in the archaeological record. Although most DNA within calculus is microbial, it has been shown to contain sufficient human DNA for the targeted retrieval of whole mitochondrial genomes. Here, we explore whether calculus is also a viable substrate for whole human genome recovery using targeted enrichment techniques.
Materials and methods
Total DNA extracted from 24 paired archaeological human dentin and calculus samples was subjected to whole human genome enrichment using in‐solution hybridization capture and high‐throughput sequencing.

Quantifying the genetic correlation between cancers can provide important insights into the mechanisms driving cancer etiology. Using genome-wide association study summary statistics across six cancer types based on a total of 296,215 cases and 301,319 controls of European ancestry, here we estimate the pair-wise genetic correlations between breast, colorectal, head/neck, lung, ovary and prostate cancer, and between cancers and 38 other diseases. Cultivation of microorganisms facilitates characterization of metabolism, interspecies dependencies, virus-host interactions, and other information necessary to resolve the functions and distribution of individual taxa. However, the metabolic and physiological capacities for the majority of microbes remains unresolved because of the lack of cultivated representatives for many groups limits our ability to test cultivation-independent observations. The Northern Gulf of Mexico offers a diversity of ecosystems under the continuous threat from natural and anthropogenic disturbances, yet little is known about its native bacterioplankton community. Coregonines, including cisco (Coregonus artedi), kiyi (Coregonus kiyi), and bloater (Coregonus hoyi), are a focus for prey fish conservation and restoration efforts throughout the Laurentian Great Lakes. However, fundamental questions about coregonine ecology and genetics remain. For example, we know little about how the early life stages of coregonines respond to environmental change at either the genotypic or phenotypic level. Floodplain aquifer systems are diverse and heterogenous ecosystems that serve many ecological functions, including habitat provision to a range of groundwater species. The Flathead River system of northwestern Montana is home to many floodplain aquifers of great ecological importance to the region. The basic biology, population structure, and dispersal patterns of obligate groundwater organisms that reside within the aquifers of the Flathead are still largely unknown. In this study, we investigate the population structure of one such taxon, an undescribed species of the amphipod genus Stygobromus. Nurses routinely obtain genomic data when collecting family health histories. However, they report low confidence in their knowledge and understanding of genomics and the genetically engineered medications prescribed for their patients. The purpose of this project was the development and implementation of an evidence-based online education program about genetics and genomics to increase the nurses' understanding and ability to provide competent care for their patients receiving treatments based on the science of genomics. Widely effective treatment for alcohol use disorder is not yet available, because the exact biological mechanisms that underlie this disorder are not completely understood. One way to gain a better understanding of these mechanisms is to examine the genetic frameworks that contribute to the risk for developing this disorder. This dissertation examines genetic association data in combination with gene expression networks in the brain to identify functional groups of genes associated with alcohol consumption and dependence.

Microsatellite polymorphism has always been a challenge for genome assembly and sequence alignment due to sequencing errors, short read lengths, and high incidence of polymerase slippage in microsatellite regions. Despite the information they carry being very valuable, microsatellite variations have not gained enough attention to be a routine step in genome sequence analysis pipelines. After the completion of the 1000 Genomes Project, which aimed to establish the most detailed genetic variation catalog for humans, the consortium released only two microsatellite prediction sets generated by two tools. The evolution of disease resistance in plants occurs within a framework of interacting
phenotypes, balancing natural selection for life-history traits along a continuum of
fast-growing and poorly defended, or slow-growing and well-defended lifestyles. Plant
populations connected by gene flow are physiologically limited to evolving along a
single axis of the spectrum of the growth-defense trade-off, and strong local selection
can purge phenotypic variance from a population or species, making it difficult to

Cancer progression is driven by cumulative changes that promote and maintain the malignant phenotype. Epigenetic alterations are central to malignant transformation and to the development of therapy resistance. Changes in DNA methylation, histone acetylation and methylation, noncoding RNA expression and higher-order chromatin structures are epigenetic features of cancer, which are independent of changes in the DNA sequence.
