Four Types Of Activities That Affect Animals: Implications For Animal Welfare Science And Animal Ethics Philosophy, D. Fraser, A. M. Macrae

David Fraser, PhD

People affect animals through four broad types of activity: (1) people keep companion, farm, laboratory and captive wild animals, often while using them for some purpose; (2) people cause deliberate harm to animals through activities such as slaughter, pest control, hunting, and toxicology testing; (3) people cause direct but unintended harm to animals through crop production, transportation, night-time lighting, and many other human activities; and (4) people harm animals indirectly by disturbing ecological systems and the processes of nature, for example by destroying habitat, introducing foreign species, and causing pollution and climate change. Each type of activity affects vast numbers …

Nbpmf: Novel Network-Based Inference Methods For Peptide Mass Fingerprinting, Zhewei Liang Nov 2017

Nbpmf: Novel Network-Based Inference Methods For Peptide Mass Fingerprinting, Zhewei Liang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Proteins are large, complex molecules that perform a vast array of functions in every living cell. A proteome is a set of proteins produced in an organism, and proteomics is the large-scale study of proteomes. Several high-throughput technologies have been developed in proteomics, where the most commonly applied are mass spectrometry (MS) based approaches. MS is an analytical technique for determining the composition of a sample. Recently it has become a primary tool for protein identification, quantification, and post translational modification (PTM) characterization in proteomics research. There are usually two different ways to identify proteins: top-down and bottom-up. Top-down approaches …

Study On Some Properties And Morphology Of Composites Based On Polyethylene Grafted Acrylic Acid/Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer/Calcium Carbonate, Hoang Thai, Cong Do Van

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Composites based on polyethylene grafted acrylic acid (PE-g-AAc)/ethylene-co-vinylacetate copolymer (EVA)/calcium carbonate (CaCO3) were prepared by melt mixing. Relative melt viscosity, morphology, mechanical properties and thermostability of the composites were studied. The experimental results show that the presence of (CaCO3) activated by stearic acid (10-20 wt.%) changes lightly stable torque of polymer blend of PE-g-AAc/EVA. Use of modified PE improves compatibility of PE and EVA as well as makes the components disperse into each other better than in blends using unmodified PE. Tensile strength and elongation at break of both polymer blends decrease with presence of CaCO3. However, tensile strength of …

Development Of A Broadly Protective Modified-Live Virus Vaccine Candidate Against Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus, Haiyan Sun, Aspen Workman, Fernando A. Osorio, David J. Steffen, Hiep L.X. Vu Nov 2017

Development Of A Broadly Protective Modified-Live Virus Vaccine Candidate Against Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus, Haiyan Sun, Aspen Workman, Fernando A. Osorio, David J. Steffen, Hiep L.X. Vu

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines are widely used to protect pigs against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). However, current MLV vaccines do not confer adequate levels of heterologous protection, presumably due to the substantial genetic diversity of PRRSV isolates circulating in the field. To overcome this genetic variation challenge, we recently generated a synthetic PRRSV strain containing a consensus genomic sequence of PRRSV-2. We demonstrated that our synthetic PRRSV strain confers unprecedented levels of heterologous protection. However, the synthetic PRRSV strain at passage 1 (hereafter designated CON-P1) is highly virulent and therefore, is not suitable to be used as …

The field of paleogenomics (the study of ancient genomes) is rapidly advancing with more robust methods of isolating ancient DNA and increasing access to next-generation DNA sequencing technology. As these studies progress, many important ethical issues have emerged that should be considered when ancient Native American remains, whom we refer to as ancestors, are used in research. We highlight a recent article by Kennett et al. (2017), “Archaeogenomic evidence reveals prehistoric matrilineal dynasty,” that brings several ethical issues to light that should be addressed in paleogenomics research (Kennett et al. 2017). The study helps elucidate the matrilineal relationships in ancient …

Msaabcr Operon Is Involved In Persister Cell Formation In Staphylococcus Aureus, Gyan S. Sahukhal, Shanti Pandey, Mohamed O. Elasri

Faculty Publications

Background

Persister cells comprise a phenotypic variant that shows extreme antibiotic tolerance resulting in treatment failures of bacterial infections. While this phenomenon has posed a great threat in public health, mechanisms underlying their formation in Staphylococcus aureus remain largely unknown. Increasing evidences of the presence of persister cells in recalcitrant infections underscores the great urgency to unravel the mechanism by which these cells develop. Previously, we characterized msaABCR operon that plays roles in regulation of virulence, biofilm development and antibiotic resistance. We also characterized the function of MsaB protein and showed that MsaB is a putative transcription factor that binds …

Electrochemical Performances And Corrosion Inhibition Of Aa6061 In Tropical Seawater, Rosliza R., Senin H.B., Wan Nik W.B.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The corrosion performances of AA6061 aluminum alloy in tropical seawater was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and their morphology was characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the presence of sodium benzoate as an inhibitor significantly decrease the corrosion current densities (i corr ), corrosion rates and double layer capacitance (C dl ), whilst increasing the polarization resistance (R p ). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicated that the mechanism of charge transfer and the formation of thin film have been taken place on the specimens.

Structural Characterization Of Agar Extracted From Six Red Seaweed Species Growing In The Coast Of Vietnam, Van Tran Thi Thanh, Ly Bui Minh, Buu Ngo Quoc, Kinh Chu Dinh Nov 2017

Structural Characterization Of Agar Extracted From Six Red Seaweed Species Growing In The Coast Of Vietnam, Van Tran Thi Thanh, Ly Bui Minh, Buu Ngo Quoc, Kinh Chu Dinh

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Polysaccharides extracted from six red seaweed species growing in Vietnam have been studied. Characterisation of their structure by chemical and spectroscopic methods showed that all of them have a basic repeating structure of alternating 3-linked b-D-galactopyranosyl and 4-linked 3,6-anhydro a-L-galactopyranosyl units with substituted methyl ether groups. The native agar offers only weak gelling abilities owing to the 4-linked a-L-galactopyranosyl 6-sulfate as its precursor. Conversion of this unit into the corresponding 3,6-anhydride by treating with hot alkali generally led to gel strength increasing. The agars from G. fisheri and G. firma are poorly substituted, while those from G.asiatica, G.tenustipitata and G. …

Fault Location On A Distribution Feeder Using Fault Generated High Frequency Current Signatures, Hizam Hashim, Crossley P.A. Nov 2017

Fault Location On A Distribution Feeder Using Fault Generated High Frequency Current Signatures, Hizam Hashim, Crossley P.A.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

This paper describes how the fault generated travelling waves detected in the current signals at a single location on a distribution feeder can be used for fault location. The method identifies the fault section and the probable location of the fault by comparing the relative distance of each “peak” in the high frequency current signals to the known reflection points in the distribution feeder. The probable fault location is then used within a transient power system simulator that models the actual network. The resulting simulated current waveforms are then cross-correlated against the original signal. If the estimated fault location is …
