Composition And Quantification Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Deep-Pelagic Fauna. Cruises Dp02, Dp03, And Dp04 From August 2015 - August 2016, Isabel C. Romero

DEEPEND Datasets

Samples were collected in the northern Gulf of Mexico on cruises DP02, DP03 and DP04 from August 2015 - August 2016. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) data were integrated with those from population dynamics and stable isotope analysis to provide evidence for effects of oil exposure to deep pelagic communities. The target fish species include Argyropelecus spp., Ceratoscopelus warmingii, Chauliodus sloani, Diaphus spp., Lampanyctus alatus, Lepidophanes guentheri, and Sigmops elongatus. Analysis of PAHs was conducted on different fish tissues (muscle, guts, gills, and eggs) following modified EPA method 8270D and QA/QC strict protocols. Detection and quantification of PAH homologues was performed …

DEEPEND Datasets

Larval catch data after the oil spill is being used to improve our understanding of the causes of temporal variability as it relates to the Deep Water Horizon oil spill (DWHOS). Bongo and neuston net tows were conducted at 48 stations in both June and July, 2015 in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Cruise data collected at each site included latitude/longitude, date, time and environmental data (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen). The occurrence and density of selected epipelagic (e.g., billfishes, tunas, dolphinfishes, flyingfishes) and deep pelagic (e.g., lanternfishes, bristlemouths, marine hatchetfishes) fish larvae were quantified and are being used to extend …

DEEPEND Datasets

Shelf and slope waters in the Deep Water Horizon oil spill (DWHOS) area are known to serve as critical spawning, nursery, and foraging habitat of several important oceanic species including billfishes (e.g. blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish), tunas (bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna), and other pelagic taxa (swordfish, dolphinfishes). The aim of this component was to further investigate potential ecological effects of the DWHOS on pelagic fishes during the early life period. Larval fishes were sampled from 48 stations in the northern Gulf of Mexico and cruise data was collected at each site including latitude/longitude, date, time and environmental data (sea …

Ergot And Loline Alkaloid Concentrations In Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Tillers, Rebecca L. Mcculley Feb 2017

Ergot And Loline Alkaloid Concentrations In Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Tillers, Rebecca L. Mcculley

Forage Climate Change Experiment Research Data

Approximately 40 tall fescue tillers were randomly collected and frozen from each of the 20 treatment plots.

Tillers were cut at 7.6 cm above ground level and tested for the presence of the Epichloe endophyte using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Tillers from each plot were sorted into 'infected' vs 'uninfected' groups, lyophilized, and ground through a 1mm screen using a Cyclotec 1093 mill.

Ground material from the endophyte infected tillers was analyzed for ergot and loline alkaloids in the lab of Lowell Bush at the University of Kentucky, Plant and Soil Sciences Dept.

For details on alkaloid analyses see: McCulley …

Changes In Balance And Joint Position Sense During A 12-Day High Altitude Trek: The British Services Dhaulagiri Medical Research Expedition, Sarah B. Clarke Jan 2017

Changes In Balance And Joint Position Sense During A 12-Day High Altitude Trek: The British Services Dhaulagiri Medical Research Expedition, Sarah B. Clarke

Datasets

Postural control and joint position sense are essential for safely undertaking leisure and professional activities, particularly at high altitude. We tested whether exposure to a 12-day trek with a gradual ascent to high altitude impairs postural control and joint position sense. This was a repeated measures observational study of 12 military service personnel (28±4 years). Postural control (sway velocity measured by a portable force platform) during standing balance, a Sharpened Romberg Test and knee joint position sense were measured, in England (113m), and at 3 research camps (3619m, 4600m and 5140m) on a 12-day high altitude trek in the Dhaulagiri …

Dataset From: Phylogeny And Ontogeny Of Lizard Display Behavior, Michele A. Johnson, E G. Cook, B K. Kircher

Biology Faculty Research

Appendix 1. Descriptions of lizard display.

This appendix provides the descriptions of display data for each lizard genus, compiled from a search of the primary scientific literature. Posture and motion displays components were categorized as types of postural changes, head movements, mouth displays, gular displays, limb movements, and tail movements. An “x” in a cell indicates that at least one species in that genus has been reported to use a given posture or motion in its display. Color displays were categorized by the body location of the color involved in display, with each color reported to be involved in at …

"Distribution Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In Northern California" Appendix, Cara L. Appel, William J. Zielinski, Frederick V. Schlexer, Richard Callas, Tim Bean

Research Data Sets

Western Wildlife 4:17–28, 2017: The North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is one of the most widely distributed mammals in North America, but recent reports have suggested declines in parts of its range in the West. In California, we know little about porcupines’ historical or current status; maps of porcupine distribution conflict considerably. Nevertheless, the species is of interest to natural resource managers. For much of the 1900s, foresters and others primarily treated porcupines as pests because of the undesirable damage they inflict by feeding on trees and gnawing on manmade items in search of salt. More recently, porcupines …
