New Iron Containing Hybrid Silicates For The Selective Removal Of Arsenic Oxyanions From Contaminated Water, Medhat El-Moselhy, Mohamed Thabet Dec 2015

New Iron Containing Hybrid Silicates For The Selective Removal Of Arsenic Oxyanions From Contaminated Water, Medhat El-Moselhy, Mohamed Thabet

Al-Azhar Bulletin of Science

A series of hybrid silicates containing iron oxides was synthesized via loading with hydrated iron oxide species (HFO) using a post precipitation mechanism from aqueous solution using different amounts of iron into the silica. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR and low temperature nitrogen sorption. XRD analysis confirmed that HFO- Si was amorphous and iron oxide crystals in the silica cannot be detected due to both the lower size of HFO and the probability that occupying interstitial positions inside the silicate matrix. However, TEM image showed the presence of nano-sized HFO located inside the silicate matrix. …

Extracts Of Mint And Tea As Green Corrosion Inhibitors For Mild Steel In Hydrochloric Acid Solution, M. Bedair, M. Metwally, S. Soliman, A. Al-Sabagh, A. Salem, T. Mohamed

Al-Azhar Bulletin of Science

The corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid by the extracts of Stems of Mint (SM), Leaves Mint (LM), Caffeine (CE), and Tea extract (TEX) has been studied as cheap and eco-friendly inhibitors using weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. Efficiency was found to increase with increasing concentrations of the extracts. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl on addition of extracts was also studied. The inhibition is assumed to occur via adsorption of the inhibitor molecules on the metal surface. The adsorption of the molecules …

Microbial Communities Of The Providence River, Jacqueline Kratch Apr 2015

Microbial Communities Of The Providence River, Jacqueline Kratch

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

The Providence River has been industrialized for over one-hundred years. Industries such as oil storage and metal recycling facilities have left high levels of pollutant metals, including lead (Pb), in the soil and water. The elevated Pb concentrations in these environments influence the selection of Pb resistance mechanisms in the bacterial community1. One mechanism of heavy metal resistance is the Pb efflux pump, consisting of proteins in the cell membrane that aid in the transport of Pb out of the cell2. In this study we investigated the co-occurrence of Pb efflux pumps and antibiotic efflux pumps in bacteria from Pb …

Hedgehog (HH) proteins are proteolytically processed into a biologically active form that is covalently modified by cholesterol and palmitate. However, most studies of HH biogenesis have characterized protein from cells in which HH is overexpressed. We purified Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) from cells expressing physiologically relevant levels and showed that it was more potent than SHH isolated from overexpressing cells. Furthermore, the SHH in our preparations was modified with a diverse spectrum of fatty acids on its amino termini, and this spectrum of fatty acids varied dramatically depending on the growth conditions of the cells. The fatty acid composition of SHH …

Oncostatin M Binds To Extracellular Matrix In A Bioactive Conformation: Implications For Inflammation And Metastasis, Randall E. Ryan, Bryan Martin, Liliana Mellor, Reed B. Jacob, Ken Tawara, Owen M. Mcdougal, Julia Thom Oxford, Cheryl L. Jorcyk

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Oncostatin M (OSM) is an interleukin-6-like inflammatory cytokine reported to play a role in a number of pathological processes including cancer. Full-length OSM is expressed as a 26 kDa protein that can be proteolytically processed into 24 kDa and 22 kDa forms via removal of C-terminal peptides. In this study, we examined both the ability of OSM to bind to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the activity of immobilized OSM on human breast carcinoma cells. OSM was observed to bind to ECM proteins collagen types I and XI, laminin, and fibronectin in a pH-dependent fashion, suggesting a role for electrostatic …

We use observations from the April 2008 NASA ARCTAS aircraft campaign to the North American Arctic, interpreted with a global 3-D chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem), to better understand the sources and cycling of hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx≡H+OH+peroxy radicals) and their reservoirs (HOy≡HOx+peroxides) in the springtime Arctic atmosphere. We find that a standard gas-phase chemical mechanism overestimates the observed HO2 and H2O2 concentrations. Computation of HOx and HOy gas-phase chemical budgets on the basis of the aircraft observations also indicates a large missing sink for both. We hypothesize that this could reflect HO2 uptake by aerosols, favored by low temperatures and …

Highly Constrained Intergenic Drosophila Ultraconserved Elements Are Candidate Ncrnas, Andrew D. Kern, Daniel A. Barbash, Joshua Chang Mell, Daniel Hupalo, Amanda Jensen Jan 2015

Highly Constrained Intergenic Drosophila Ultraconserved Elements Are Candidate Ncrnas, Andrew D. Kern, Daniel A. Barbash, Joshua Chang Mell, Daniel Hupalo, Amanda Jensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Eukaryotes contain short (∼80–200 bp) regions that have few or no substitutions among species that represent hundreds of millions of years of evolutionary divergence. These ultraconserved elements (UCEs) are candidates for containing essential functions, but their biological roles remain largely unknown. Here, we report the discovery and characterization of UCEs from 12 sequenced Drosophilaspecies. We identified 98 elements ≥80 bp long with very high conservation across the Drosophila phylogeny. Population genetic analyses reveal that these UCEs are not present in mutational cold spots. Instead we infer that they experience a level of selective constraint almost 10-fold higher compared with …

Restoration Of Headwater And Coastal Fens In The Lake Superior Basin Of Upper Michigan, James A. Bess

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In 2009, research projects were initiated at Michigan Technological University to develop restoration techniques for headwater fens and coastal wetlands in the southern Lake Superior Basin in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The primary focus of these was to quantify the efficacy of using locally collected seeds as a technique for wetland restoration. Two primary sites were selected, the Sleeper Lake Fen complex in Luce County and the Portage Waterway-Keweenaw Bay region of Lake Superior in Baraga and Houghton Counties. At the Sleeper Lake site, a combination of heavy machinery, seeding and mulch application was used to restore a 1.6 km ditch …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Substituted Coumarin Derivatives As Inhibitors Of Monoamine Oxidase B, Ian A. Kieffer Jan 2015

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Substituted Coumarin Derivatives As Inhibitors Of Monoamine Oxidase B, Ian A. Kieffer

Chemistry Theses

Monoamine oxidase B (MAO B) is of clinical importance due to its perceived role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, making inhibitors of MAO B popular candidates for drug design. A series of coumarin derivatives have been prepared and assayed, revealing that the synthesized inhibitors act through a competitive mode of inhibition. In addition, these inhibitors are potent with Ki values in the nanomolar range. Overall, substitution at the 3- position of the coumarin was found to be important to inhibitor potency and further study of 3-aryl coumarin substitution computationally led to the prediction of 3-(3-aminophenyl)-6-hydroxycoumarin as a lead compound …
