Potential Effects Of Elevated Co2 On Pitcher Plant Nectar Composition, Prey Capture, And Inquiline Communities, Deirdre Courtney

Honors Theses

Human activities such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation have contributed significantly to the increasing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution. Under the IPCC A1FI emission scenario, we are expected to reach levels as high as 1000 ppm by the end of the century. On average, C3 plants experience a 27% increase in carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio under elevated CO2. As a result, C3 plants typically exhibit an increase in carbon-based secondary compounds. Carnivorous plants are a rare type of C3 plant that has adapted to survive in low …

Economic And Political Implications Of Agricultural Subsidies And Us Farm Policy, Justin Bogardus

Honors Theses

This thesis pertains to agricultural subsidies, their economic and political implications and what would happen to both price and production levels of different crops should those subsidies be removed. The 3 main crops examined are corn, wool and soybeans. Technological advancements made after 1900 had a profound effect on productivity and efficiency, leading to a number of important economic effects. Market integration, economies of scale, market structure, vertical integration and subsidization, all led to government intervention in the form of regulation and subsidy. Farm policy, starting in early 1900s, focused on price stabilization policies and food programs through the different …

Neuropsychological Effects Of Interactive Physical And Cognitive Exercise: Increasing The Mental Challenge, Shannon Crowley Jun 2014

Neuropsychological Effects Of Interactive Physical And Cognitive Exercise: Increasing The Mental Challenge, Shannon Crowley

Honors Theses

In the past decade there has been a strong desire to implement more enjoyable, interactive video game experiences to enhance an individual’s exercise performance. In addition, virtual reality exercise has been utilized to create a more pleasurable experience for older adults suffering from dementia. Best (2012) defined exergaming as, “a new generation of video games that stimulate a more active, whole-body gaming experience.” A recent study found that exergaming, when compared to stationary biking, can improve cognition among the older population suffering from cognitive decline (Anderson-Hanley et al., 2012). In addition, working memory training also leads to a significant improvement …

The Effects Of Soil Ph On The Molting Success Of Blacklegged Ticks (Ixodes Scapularis): A Laboratory Experiment, Daniel Rice

Honors Theses

Ixodes scapularis, or the black-legged tick, is the major vector of Lyme disease in the U.S. I. scapularis has expanded its range in recent decades, making the study of factors affecting its distribution a high priority. Studying the effects of various conditions in the soil could help in predicting range expansions, because ticks spend the majority of their lives in contact with the soil. We investigated the effects of soil pH on the molting success of engorged I. scapularis nymphs collected from Eastern Chipmunks (Tamias striatus). The experiment was conducted in a laboratory to control for covariates such as temperature …

Mindful Meditation And Physical Exercise: Neuropsychological Effects, Emma Stein Jun 2014

Mindful Meditation And Physical Exercise: Neuropsychological Effects, Emma Stein

Honors Theses

An abundance of prior research has indicated the robust relationship between physical exercise and cognition (Colcombe & Kramer, 2003). More recent research has investigated the cognitive and stress-relieving benefits of mind-body exercise, involving a combination of mindful meditation techniques with physical movements (Wayne, et al., 2014). Among these two cognitively enhancing techniques, is “exergaming,” which provides interactive physical exercise with a virtual environment. Research on exergaming has found additional cognitive benefits of interactive mental and physical exercise compared to regular physical exercise (Anderson-Hanley, et al., 2012). However, it remains unclear as to which type of mental engagement is required during …

Neuropsychological Outcomes Of Children With Craniosynostosis, Marykathryn Strahle Jun 2014

Neuropsychological Outcomes Of Children With Craniosynostosis, Marykathryn Strahle

Honors Theses

Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures. Previous research suggests that craniosynostosis is related to cognitive deficits, impairments, and delay, and that these impairments might be related to the age of surgical intervention or the location and severity of suture fusion (Kapp-Simon, 1998). The current research sought to further investigate such relationships using a sample of 177 pediatric patients from the University of Michigan Neuropsychology Clinic. The data included 56 intelligence quotient (IQ) scores from various neuropsychological tests [Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID), Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI), and Wechsler Intelligence Scale …

Investigating The Colocalization Of The Follicle Stimulating Hormone Receptor With Caveolin In Lipid Rafts, David Wood Jun 2014

Investigating The Colocalization Of The Follicle Stimulating Hormone Receptor With Caveolin In Lipid Rafts, David Wood

Honors Theses

Located in the brain and stimulated by releasing hormones from the hypothalamus, the anterior pituitary gland secretes hormones into the blood stream that get dispersed throughout the body resulting in a physiological change. One of those hormones is the human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which is a glycoprotein that is essential for reproduction in both males and females (Dias, James). FSH is a dimeric protein made up of two pieces, an alpha subunit, and a beta subunit. The alpha subunit is familiar to all glycoprotein hormones, such as luteinizing hormone, and the thyroid-stimulating hormone. The beta subunit is specific to FSH …

A Comparative Study Of Gupix And Geopixe Software In The Analysis Of Pixe Spectra Of Aerosol Samples, Sean Collison

Honors Theses

Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) spectroscopy is a powerful tool used in the Union College Ion-Beam Analysis Laboratory for the elemental analysis of environmental pollution. Samples are bombarded with proton beams from the 1.1‐MV Pelletron accelerator and characteristic X-rays emitted from the samples are detected, resulting in X-ray energy spectra. These spectra are analyzed using software packages that fit the data and calculate the concentrations of elements in the samples. I have performed a comparative study of two of the most popular software packages, GUPIX and GeoPIXE, in the analysis of atmospheric aerosol samples to assess the strengths and weaknesses of …

The Effects Of Soil Ph And Texture On The Molting Success And Survival Of Blacklegged Ticks (Ixodes Scapularis): A Field Experiment, Colleen Cook

Honors Theses

The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) is the primary vector of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. When a tick is not questing or feeding, the majority of its life is spent within the soil. Abiotic factors within soil have been shown to affect tick molting and survival across all life stages. Soil pH, however, has not been heavily investigated. In this field study, I investigated the effects of soil pH and texture on engorged nymphal ticks. Two sites were chosen to encompass the extremes of soil pH in the region; the Albany Pine Bush in Albany, NY has …

Localization Of The Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Receptor In Lipid Raft Domains, Tyler Esposito Jun 2014

Localization Of The Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Receptor In Lipid Raft Domains, Tyler Esposito

Honors Theses

Lipid raft domains have been shown to be important in receptor signaling, especially for G Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCR). Follicle stimulating hormone is a vital reproductive signal that relies on effective signaling of its GPCR. The goal of this study was to test whether or not the follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) utilizes lipid raft domains when signaling. The main methods used were fluorescent antibodies and various forms of microscopy, including confocal microscopy. A fluorescent antibody for the FSHR (mAb 106.105) allowed us to perform these studies. In the first experiment, cells treated with FSH and stained with the receptor …

Expression In Yeast Of The Metacaspase Scp3 From The Fungus Schizophyllum Commune, Anne Kaminski Jun 2014

Expression In Yeast Of The Metacaspase Scp3 From The Fungus Schizophyllum Commune, Anne Kaminski

Honors Theses

Metacaspases are caspase homologs that are found in plants, fungi, and protists. They are involved in programmed cell death, a structured and regulated process to break down cells. There is limited information available on metacaspases and further research is necessary to understand how they work. One reason metacaspases are studied is that they are considered to be a potential drug target for pathogenic microorganisms. Five metacaspases scp1-5 were identified in S. commune through their similarity to the yeast metacaspase Yca1. The overall goal of the lab is to study and characterize these proteins. This thesis outlines the path taken to …

Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Binding Of Perfluoroalkyl Acids With Human Serum Albumin Using An Improved Approach To Equilibrium Dialysis, Michael Morris Jun 2014

Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Binding Of Perfluoroalkyl Acids With Human Serum Albumin Using An Improved Approach To Equilibrium Dialysis, Michael Morris

Honors Theses

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are used to produce many consumer products, but their bioaccumulative and toxic properties and their global persistence in the environment are major concerns. In particular, PFAAs have been shown to accumulate in the blood, liver, and kidneys of organisms. As such, it is important to elucidate the toxicokinetics of PFAAs by quantitatively and qualitatively characterizing the binding mechanism of PFAAs to human serum albumin (HSA). In this study, the binding of PFAAs to HSA are studied via a high-throughput equilibrium dialysis method that utilizes the 96-well Equilibrium Dialyzer coupled with sample quantitation using liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry …

Interaction Of Human Follicle Stimulating Hormone Receptor With Caveolin Within The Cell Membrane, Jordan Pereira Jun 2014

Interaction Of Human Follicle Stimulating Hormone Receptor With Caveolin Within The Cell Membrane, Jordan Pereira

Honors Theses

The human FSH receptor is a g protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) expressed on the surface of granulosa cells in the ovary and Sertoli cells in the testes. FSHR has a sequence of amino acids consistent with a caveolin interaction motif (φXφXXXXφXXφ) found between amino acids 479-489 in the primary receptor sequence in the putative 4th transmembrane domain. Caveolin is a protein found in cell membrane micro domains such as lipid rafts. These densely packed regions of the membrane are enriched for sphingolipids and cholesterol and are thought to be involved in signal transduction. Caveolin can be found in caveolae, flask-like structures …

Visual Communication In Anolis Lizards: Investigating The Visibility Of Signals Of Differing Color Against Complex Backgrounds, Carley Perez

Honors Theses

Lizards of the genus Anolis communicate through visual displays involving the opening and closing of an expandable flap of skin, called a dewlap, located on their throat. In some habitats up to ten species of Anolis are found in close proximity to one another. For a dewlap color to be effective an individual of the same species should be able to easily distinguish it from the dewlap color of other species located in the same habitat. We wanted to determine how different two colors must be in order to be reliably discriminated by an Anolis lizard. Lizards (Anolis sagrei) placed …

Restoring The Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Forests Using Pineywoods Cattle Grazing In Conjunction With Prescribed Burning, L. Tyler Albin

Honors Theses

The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is major forest constituent of the Southern Coastal Plains of the United States. Ecologically, a virgin longleaf pine forests supports increased species richness. Since the 1800s, longleaf pine forests have been exploited as a massive source of commercial products (e.g., lumber, pulp, and naval stores). A decrease in species richness has been recorded following this vast decrease in longleaf pine presence. Rebuilding the longleaf pine ecosystem is essential for restoring species richness and maintaining the ecological health of many Costal Plains habitats. Presently, the most popular restoration and management method utilized is prescribed burning. Prescribed …
