Never Mind Grendel! Can Beowulf Conquer The 21st-Century Guilt Trip?, Stephen Asma
Never Mind Grendel! Can Beowulf Conquer The 21st-Century Guilt Trip?, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
The writer casts doubt on whether the emasculated Beowulf put forward by J. R. R. Tolkien and in the recent movie version of the story transcends and nullifies the heroic original. He suggests that both Beowulfs may be necessary.

The Emergence Of Sex, Ursula Goodenough
The Emergence Of Sex, Ursula Goodenough
Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations
Biological traits, the foci of natural selection, are by definition emergent from the genes, proteins, and other “nothing-buts” that constitute them. Moreover, and with the exception of recently emergent “spandrels,” each can be accorded a teleological dimension—each is “for” some purpose conducive to an organism's continuation. Sex, which is “for” the generation of recombinant genomes, may be one of the most ancient and ubiquitous traits in biology. In the course of its evolution, many additional traits, such as gender and nurture, have emerged. Patterns of sexual exchange are the basis for patterns of biological evolution and are central to the …

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are associated with inappropriate protein deposition and ordered amyloid fibril assembly. Molecular chaperones, including αBcrystallin, play a role in the prevention of protein deposition. A series of site-directed mutants of the human molecular chaperone, αB-crystallin, were constructed which focused on the flexible C-terminal extension of the protein. We investigated the structural role of this region as well as its role in the chaperone function of αB-crystallin under different types of protein aggregation, i.e. disordered amorphous aggregation and ordered amyloid fibril assembly. It was found that mutation of lysine and glutamic acid residues in the C-terminal …

The Beasts In Our Brain, Neil Greenberg
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
In the neuropsychology of art, we must remember that the Brain of Man has not abandoned its ancient animal foundations, it has built upon them . . . . But it has also reconstructed them as the shifting earth beneath dictates . . . . We have done the best possible in the landscape in which we have found ourselves with the raw materials we have inherited." --(Greenberg, Prolegomena to a Study of Mind, 1973, ch. 42)

Patterns Of Life: Integrating Mathematics With Science, Culture, And Art, Dian Calkins, James B. Cunningham, Foad Satterfield, Mietek Kolipinski, Sibdas Ghosh
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
We offered undergraduate students an interdisciplinary course Patterns of Life that develops mathematical reasoning strategies to solve complex problems. In its most essential form, mathematics is the study of patterns; and mathematical (patterned) reasoning is the ability to think with a plan and a purpose. Students personally experience and use patterns of reasoning in diverse disciplines, and then work in groups to form a valid strategy for solving a selected problem. Patterns of Life is designed as guided, on-site, active-learning experiences, in cooperation with local scientific, cultural and fine arts communities. Course goals for students include: (1) to increase mathematical …

How To Survive The Apocalypse, Stephen Asma
How To Survive The Apocalypse, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
The article presents a guide on how people with skepticism and critical thinking can survive the Rapture and Armageddon. According to the Book of Revelations, the Lord will return to the earth to separate the good and the bad. When the Great Tribulation comes, people have no more time for repentance. The impostor strategy is one way to avoid the Tribulation.

An Evaluation Of Movement Patterns And Effects Of Habitat Patch Size On The Demography Of The Florida Mouse (Podomys Floridanus), Irmgard Lukanik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Habitat degradation by humans has been the main reason for the decline in numbers of P. floridanus, the only mammal indigenous to the state of Florida, in the past century. The mouse inhabits what remains of scrub and sandhill associations, which are characterized by patches of sandy soils within a more mesic landscape. It has long been accepted that small populations are more prone to decline and extinction than are larger ones as a result of environmental fluctuations. I hypothesized that the demography of a population of P. floridanus would be affected by a restriction in numbers through habitat …

Dinosaurs On The Ark: Natural History And The New Evangelical Museum, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
This article examines the Creation Museum in Kentucky. Featured at the museum is a replica of Noah's Ark. The author notes that there is some fudging going on to fit all the supposedly transported animals in such a small vessel. According to the museum, the Grand Canyon was not millions of years in the making but appeared after the flood. The evangelical museum is an offshoot of the Answers in Genesis ministry. Ken A. Ham is the director of the museum as well as the head of the ministry. He says that the notion of evolution has done more harm …

Bathymetric Alterations Due To Urbanization And Their Effects On Residual Salinity, Flow Field And Transport Time For Tampa Bay, Florida, Amanda J. Linville
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Growth and development over the past one hundred years has resulted in the construction of causeways and navigational channels in Tampa Bay. Urbanization has lead to bathymetric alterations of the bay, and thus has effectively changed the residual salinity, flow fields, and transport time in Tampa Bay. In this study a numerical ocean model of Tampa Bay was first used to simulate the circulation for 2001-2003 using present day bathymetry. Then, an identical simulation was performed using the bathymetry generated from 1879 depth soundings. The residual (30-day time average) circulation fields and salinity, along with transport times was intercompared for …

Breakfast And The Diets Of Australian Children And Adolescents: An Analysis Of Data From The 1995 National Nutrition Survey, P. G. Williams
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
The aim of this study was to describe the nutrients provided to Australian children and adolescents by the breakfast meal and compare the food and nutrient intakes and health of regular breakfast eaters (those who ate breakfast five or more days a week) and skippers (who are breakfast rarely or never). The Australian Bureau of Statistics was commissioned to undertake additional analysis of data collected in the 1995 Australian National Nutrition Survey. The survey included 24-hour recalls, physical measurements and a food habits questionnaire collected during the period February 1995 to March 1996, with a nationally representative sample of 3007 …

Regulatory Aspects Of Bioactive Dairy Ingredients, P. Roupas, P. G. Williams
Regulatory Aspects Of Bioactive Dairy Ingredients, P. Roupas, P. G. Williams
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Scientific research has identified potential health benefits of many food ingredients. These health-promoting (bioactive) food ingredients may be naturally present in a food, or may be added by manufacturers into foods that do not naturally contain such components. These bioactives have challenged traditional concepts of food fortification and consequently food regulations. Dairy foods and ingredients have significant potential as vehicles for the delivery of such bioactives and health-promoting physiological effects, if regulatory hurdles can be overcome. The regulatory landscape on the addition of bioactive ingredients (from dairy streams and non-dairy sources) into foods is rapidly evolving, and the industry will …
