Research Report No. 32, Trends Of Non-Straight Tree Stems In Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, 1985-1994, H. Alexis Ross, J. David Lenhart

Informal Project Reports

Trees from East Texas loblolly ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash ( Pinus effiottii Engelm. ) pine plantations are one of the sources of raw material for conversion into products such as paper, veneer and lumber by East Texas forest product mills. The utilization of the planted trees may depend on various biological and economical factors. Factors such as tree size, tree condition, stumpage prices and interest rates can play a role in the merchandizing process.

One of the factors, tree condition, may be affected by tree crown position in canopy, incidence of disease, single stem and straightness of …

Research Report No. 31, Observed Growth Rates Of Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, H. Alexis Ross, J. David Lenhart Sep 1994

Research Report No. 31, Observed Growth Rates Of Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, H. Alexis Ross, J. David Lenhart

Informal Project Reports

Of the approximately 11.2 million acres of forest in East Texas, about 2.5 million acres have been planted with loblolly pine trees ( Pinus taeda L. ) and 500,000 acres with slash pine trees ( Pinus elliottii Engelm. ). These plantations are owned by public, industrial and non-industrial private entities with industrial ownership dominating. Even though most pine plantations in East Texas are relatively young (20 years or less), plantation information is needed for management decision-making.

Research Report No. 30, A Guide For Timing Initial Tree Harvests In East Texas Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations, J. David Lenhart, H. Alexis Ross Sep 1994

Research Report No. 30, A Guide For Timing Initial Tree Harvests In East Texas Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations, J. David Lenhart, H. Alexis Ross

Informal Project Reports

In East Texas, there are approximately 3 million acres of loblolly ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash ( Pinus elliottii Engelm. ) pine plantations. Most of these plantations, which represent about 25% of the forested area of East Texas, have been planted since 1970.

As these planted trees age, East Texas foresters may be considering initial timber harvesting decisions for unthinned plantations. Often the timing of the harvests can be determined by considering combinations of economic and non-economic values, utilization standards and timber growth' factors. However, in some situations, it may be appropriate to ascertain the proper timing by …

The Hydroclimatic Characteristics Of Nacogdoches, Texas With Implications For Water Resources Management, Larry David Clendenen Aug 1994

The Hydroclimatic Characteristics Of Nacogdoches, Texas With Implications For Water Resources Management, Larry David Clendenen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sayok's (1986) study and statistical analysis of the climate at Nacogdoches, Texas covering 1901 to 1980 is updated to include the most recent twelve years (1981-92) of records. Missing data are estimated, all analyses are repeated, and the new 1961-90 normal climate is compared to the 1951-80 and other normals. Results showed that the climate at Nacogdoches during the last decade was about the same as that in other recent decades. Thomthwaite's (1957) climate classification defines Nacogdoches as moist subhumid, third mesothermal, with moderate summer water deficiency, and a temperature effIciency regime equal to a fourth mesothermal climate. There are …

An Evaluation Of A Pilot Interpretive Program For National Forest Recreation Areas In East Texas, Ronda Elain Sutphen May 1994

An Evaluation Of A Pilot Interpretive Program For National Forest Recreation Areas In East Texas, Ronda Elain Sutphen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A visitor survey was conducted at Ratcliff and Double Lake National Forest Recreation Areas to evaluate visitor characteristics and the effectiveness of interpretive services as a management tool. Two hundred eighty-two campers completed the visitor survey. A one hundred percent sample was attempted at both recreation areas every Sunday morning during July and August of 1991. Data from both recreation areas were analyzed and compared in order to determine any significant differences between visitors in each recreation area and also between visitors who attended or did not attend interpretive programs.

Research Report No. 29, Site Index Equations For Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, Update: 1994, Jason Black, Chad Holton, Billy Johnson, Jennifer Key, Mark Kotal, Daryl Lawerence, Jon Mastin, Jack Ridinger, Janet Russell Apr 1994

Research Report No. 29, Site Index Equations For Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, Update: 1994, Jason Black, Chad Holton, Billy Johnson, Jennifer Key, Mark Kotal, Daryl Lawerence, Jon Mastin, Jack Ridinger, Janet Russell

Informal Project Reports

In 1986, equations to estimate site index in loblolly and slash pine plantations in East Texas were published (Lenhart et al. 1986). Subsequently, updated site index prediction equations were published in 1993 (Vaughn et al. 1993). Both sets of equations were developed using data collected from East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project (ETPPRP) permanent plots distributed throughout East Texas. The site index prediction equations were designed to estimate tree height 25 years from planting, ie., index age = 25 years.

Data for the 1986 and 1993 site index prediction equations were from measurements of the ETPPRP permanent plots during 19182-1984 …

A Performance Evaluation Of Edging And Trimming Operations In U.S. Hardwood Sawmills, Tony El-Radi, Steven H. Bullard, Philip Steele Jan 1994

A Performance Evaluation Of Edging And Trimming Operations In U.S. Hardwood Sawmills, Tony El-Radi, Steven H. Bullard, Philip Steele

Faculty Publications

Edger and trimmer operators must make constant decisions in short time periods on the amount of materials to remove from boards produced in the sawmill. Their decisions directly affect the total volume, grade, and value of the boards, and they therefore directly affect the total value of lumber produced. In recent years, many softwood sawmills have installed computer controlled edgers and trimmers with scanners and optimizers to achieve higher recovery rates. Before similar, relatively expensive, technologies can be seriously evaluated for the hardwood industry, however, the current performance of edging and ·trimming operations must be known. Using a sample of …

Characterizing Fusiform Rust Incidence And Distribution In East Texas, J. David Lenhart, Gary D. Kronrad, A. Gordon Holley, T.G. Gregoire Jan 1994

Characterizing Fusiform Rust Incidence And Distribution In East Texas, J. David Lenhart, Gary D. Kronrad, A. Gordon Holley, T.G. Gregoire

Faculty Publications

Three measurement cycles were completed on an extensive network of loblolly( Pinus taeda L.) pine and slash (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) pine plots in industrial plantations throughout East Texas in 1984, 1987, and 1990.Because the incidence of fusiform rust caused by Cronartium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme had been recorded at each measurement, it is possible to characterize the temporal and geographic distribution of fusiform rust among these industrial pine plantations in East Texas. Average rust incidence for each species by two year age classes is presented. For loblolly pine, there is no apparent change in overall average …

Characterization Of An Old-Growth Bottomland Hardwood Wetland Forest In Northeast Texas: Harrison Bayou, Laurence C. Walker, Thomas Brantley, Virginia Burkett Jan 1994

Characterization Of An Old-Growth Bottomland Hardwood Wetland Forest In Northeast Texas: Harrison Bayou, Laurence C. Walker, Thomas Brantley, Virginia Burkett

Faculty Publications

Most wetland losses in the southern region over the past 200 years have occurred in bottomland hardwood forests. By 1980 the original extent of palustrine bottomland in Texas had been reduced by 63%, from roughly 16 to 6 million acres. Additional losses have occurred during more recent years as a result of conversion to agriculture and timber harvests; these factors and the need to supply new hardwood chip mills in the region pose a potential threat to the remaining hardwood resource. The Harrison Bayou watershed in northeast Texas contains one of the few relatively undisturbed bottomland hardwood wetland forests in …

Basic Concepts In Computer Analysis Of Forestry Investments, Steven H. Bullard, Thomas J. Straka

Faculty Publications

In the last 20 years alone, computer hardware and software developments have dramatically increased our ability to calculate financial criteria quickly and accurately. While these advances have dramatically increased our ability to calculate, they have not replaced the need to understand what is being calculated, or how the results should be interpreted and applied. Our objective in the present article is to provide background information for understandingthe "what" and "how" of computer applications for forestry investment analysis. We briefly discuss the most important financial criteria that are calculated by investment analysis computer programs; we also describe their recommended uses and …

Two gecko species, Hemidactylus turcicus and Cyrtopodion scabrum, have been introduced into the Port of Galveston, Texas. While H. turcicus has been established for a longer period of time, the relatively recent introduction of C. scabrum near the entrance of the Port has apparently led to the displacement of H. turcicus in that area. This has resulted in a distribution in which the two populations’ are largely allopatric except for a narrow band of sympatry at the periphery of each of their ranges. We examined stomach contents of both species in allopatry and sympatry in order to determine if …
