Procedures For The Administration And Assessment Of Clearing And Protection Of Native Vegetation In Western Australia, Alexander Mcrae Holm

Soil conservation survey collection

It is Department of Agriculture policy that regulation is only used when all other approaches to address land degradation have failed. Our thrust is to encourage land holders to move towards using land within its capabilities as they continue to adopt sustainable farming systems. Underlying this approach is a self regulatory philosophy with land conservation district committees playing an important management and coordination role. Nevertheless the community expects that land degradation will be controlled and legislation is available to underpin or complement the good intentions of most land holders. The Soil and Land Conservation Act is the legislation used to …

Chlorophyll Fluorescence As A Measure Of Ozone Induced Stress, Jerry L. Faulkner Aug 1994

Chlorophyll Fluorescence As A Measure Of Ozone Induced Stress, Jerry L. Faulkner

Doctoral Dissertations

Chlorophyll fluorescence is a nondestructive, intrinsic probe of photosynthesis. It has been used in a variety of physiological and environmental research. This study attempted to investigate the usefulness of chlorophyll fluorescence as a monitor of ozone induced stress in Quercus rubra L.

Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were taken from mature trees and seedlings in open top chambers located at the Tennessee Valley Authority Air Pollution Research Facility at Norris, Tennessee. Chambers reflected one of three ozone concentration treatments: sub-ambient, ambient, or twice ambient. Spring leaf expansion was also measured as was spring and autumn chlorophyll content of leaves from mature trees. …

Patterns Of Isozyme Variation In Relation To Population Size, Isolation, And Phytogeographic History In Royal Catchfly, Rebecca W. Dolan Aug 1994

Patterns Of Isozyme Variation In Relation To Population Size, Isolation, And Phytogeographic History In Royal Catchfly, Rebecca W. Dolan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The distribution of genetic variation within and among plant populations is influenced by both contemporary and historical factors. I used isozyme analysis of band phenotypes to examine genetic structure in the rare prairie forb Silene regia. Relationships between current-day population size, isolation, and phenotypic variation were assessed for 18 populations in two regions with differing postglacial history. Western populations from unglaciated southern Missouri and Arkansas were more genetically diverse based on the Shannon-Weaver index (H) and a polymorphic index than were more eastern populations. These differences may be due to loss of variation with repeated founding of new populations in …
