This report summarizes data collected by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) monthly trawl survey cruises for January-December 1992. The trawl survey is a long term, broad scope monitoring program. Its primary goal is to produce annual indices of juvenile (young-of-year) abundance of commercially, recreationally and ecologically important marine and estuarine finfish and crustaceans. The objective is to provide indices of sufficient accuracy and precision for both immediate resource management needs and long-term understanding of environmental influences on fishery resources. A second important product of this effort is the documentation and monitoring of habitat utilization by juveniles and smaller …

This report presents a summary page for each tow conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Juvenile Fish and Blue Crab Trawl Survey during 1991. The sampling methods and summarized data are presented in Bonzek et al. (1992). Data analysis and calculations of juvenile indices for selected species are presented in Colvocoresses et al. (1991). The objective of this study has been to develop a proportionally weighted Baywide young-of-the-year Chesapeake Bay striped bass index which incorporates data from all major nursery areas of the Chesapeake Bay. In doing so three approaches were used. The first entailed simple computation of both arithmetic and geometric indices. These were computed for historical continuity. The second approach involved a weighting by the commercial landings from each river during the spawning seasons from 1973-1981. The third approach used the area of the spawning grounds and distance of shoreline adjacent to the nursery grounds. Finally, an effort at validation was made …

The disposal of dredged material from channel deepening projects is a major anthropogenic process influencing· benthic communities of coastal aquatic systems. Such activities are important because benthic subsystems and component organisms play major roles in the functioning of estuarine ecosystems. Benthic invertebrates are major prey items in the diets of fishes and crabs (Arntz and Brunswig 1975, Virnstein 1977, Arntz 1978, Blundon and Kennedy 1982, Lunz and Kendall 1982, Moeller et al. 1985, Pihl et al. 1992). As secondary producers capable of utilizing trophic resources from a variety of sources (e.g. detritus, algae, bacteria), they provide important links to higher …
