Advances In The Radiation Therapy Of Carcinoma Of The Prostate, Joel Elliot White
Advances In The Radiation Therapy Of Carcinoma Of The Prostate, Joel Elliot White
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Basic principles of radiation biology and radiation tolerance are reviewed. The Implications for radiation therapy of newer staging techniques in carcinoma of the prostate such as exploratory laparotomy, lymphangiography, and bone marrow acid prosphatase are discussed. A technique for treating the prostate and para-aortic lymph nodes in continuity is presented. Complications and results of therapy are discussed.
Changes In Serum Testosterone After Bilateral Orchiectomy In Patients With Metastatic Carcinoma Of The Prostate, Richard Senn, Riad Farah, Julius Ohorodnik, Joseph C. Cerny
Changes In Serum Testosterone After Bilateral Orchiectomy In Patients With Metastatic Carcinoma Of The Prostate, Richard Senn, Riad Farah, Julius Ohorodnik, Joseph C. Cerny
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
From a study of 38 patients, it may be concluded that, first, changes in serum testosterone levels of patients undergoing orchiectomy for metastatic carcinoma of the prostate are unrelated to the clinical course of the patient; second, no clear correlation exists between quantitative Leydig cell counts and levels of plasma testosterone; and, third, exacerbation of metastatic disease is observed while plasma testosterone remains in the castrate range. These observations question the exact function of the Leydig cell and its role in androgen production, and indicate that prostatic neoplasms have varying degrees of response to reduced androgen levels and/or androgen-Iike substances …
Partial Purification & Kinetic Properties Of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate-Dependent Alcohol Dehydrogenase Of Phycomyces Blakesleeanus, Thomas Hartz
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
NADP+-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol:NADP+:oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.2.) was partially purified from a cell-free extract of Phycomyces blakesleeanus (+ mating type, Vanderbilt strain). The fungus was grown in shake cultures containing glucose-asparagine broth, and crude cull-free enzyme extracts were prepared. The crude enzyme extracts were partially purified by a combination of ammonium sulfate precipitations and heat precipitation. Purification resulted in a 40;5 recovery of the enzyme with an increase in specific activity from 0.64 units per milligram of protein to 0.25 units per milligram. The partially-purified enzyme extracts were used to determine the kinetic properties and substrate specificity …
Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr.
Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The culture of tobacco has been associated with the history of Kentucky almost from the beginning and remains to this day a vital force in the state’s economy. In this age of scientific and technological advances – of increasing automation – we find that in tobacco farming, hand labor still figures prominently in the production of a major staple crop. This has resulted in the retention of traditional method, technology and terminology, long since lost in the culture of other crops which lent themselves more easily to mechanization.
The study is divided into three parts. Chapter I deals briefly with …

Ultraviolet Radiation Effects On Rotifers, Syed Asim Hussain
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to study ultraviolet radiation effects on rotifers. The rotifer studied was Philodina acuticornis odiosa Milne. Isolation cultures were used to grow the rotifers individually in separate U-plate depressions. The source of ultraviolet radiation consisted of four mercury germicidal lamps used in combination to deliver a uniform flux of 315 uW/cm2 over the sample. Five groups of rotifers, one control and four experimental groups of 96 each, were used. The rotifers used were 2-10 hours of age at the beginning of the experiment. The experimental groups were exposed to uv radiation for 3 minutes, …

Leaf extracts from twelve chlorophyll-deficient mutants of sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) were compared spectrophotometrically and chromatographically with extracts from normal plants to determine contents of chlorophylls a and b Total chlorophyll contents in cotyledons and leaves of all mutants were significantly lower than those in corresponding tissues of normal plants. Chlorophyll contents were generally higher in later emerging leaves of both normal and mutant plants. Chlorophyll alb ratios in first trifoliolate leaves were similar to normal in mutants ch7 and ch8, higher in mutants ch8, ch9, ch10, and ch11 …

Effects Of Variations In Peeling On The Recovery Of Water-Soluble Pigments, Betanin And Vulgaxanthin, From Red Beet Peel (Beta Vulgaris L.), Ola Goode Sanders
Effects Of Variations In Peeling On The Recovery Of Water-Soluble Pigments, Betanin And Vulgaxanthin, From Red Beet Peel (Beta Vulgaris L.), Ola Goode Sanders
Masters Theses
Objectives of this study were to measure the effects of three peeling methods on the recovery of water-soluble pigments from peels of two lots of table beets using whole beets as a control.
Red beets are a good source of red pigments which are natural pigments and can replace artificial dyes and lakes available on the market and those which have been restricted.
Two lots of red beets were peeled by three peeling methods and the peels were used for analysis of water-soluble red and yellow pigments in the beets. Vulgaxanthin-I recovery (yellow pigment) was not affected by the peeling …

Reevaluation Of Common Wheats From The Usda World Wheat Collection For Protein And Lysine Content, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
The protein and lysine content of wheat can be altered by breeding only if genetic variability exists for these traits. Lysine is a nutritionally limiting amino acid in wheat protein. Protein and lysine analyses of the common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection indicated that variability does exist for these traits. Some of the variability for protein and lysine among wheats of the World Collection may not be genetic in origin, because all the 12,000 wheats analyzed were not grown in the same environment. The purpose of this study was to reevaluate selected lines from the World Wheat Collection …

Additional Records Of The Stenodermine Bat, Sturnina Thomasi, From The Lesser Antillean Island Of Guadeloupe, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones
Mammalogy Papers: University of Nebraska State Museum
Sturnira thomusi was named and described by de la Torre and Schwartz (Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington 79: 297-303, 1966) on the basis of a single male from the island of Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles, that was captured by Richard Thomas in 1963. The holotype of S. thomasi has until now been the only known specimen of this unique species. In late July of 1974, a field party from the Museum of Texas Tech University (supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, GB-41105) collected bats on Guadeloupe and took four additional individuals of S. thomasi, all …

Acid-Treated Vs. Dried Corn With And Without Zeranol Implants For Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry, R. C. Ward
Acid-Treated Vs. Dried Corn With And Without Zeranol Implants For Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry, R. C. Ward
South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1975
Corn grain is frequently harvested at a moisture content too high for safe keeping under conventional grain storage conditions. While this may be a desirable or necessary practice, the grain must be dried, stored under oxygen-limiting conditions, stored to produce ensiled grain or treated with an effective preservative to prevent spoilage during storage. Each of these methods is being used for preservation and storage of corn when harvested at a high-moisture content (20 to 30%) and used for feeding livestock. Total costs including storage structures, losses in processing and storage and comparative feeding value are factors involved in choice of …
