Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster Sep 1969

Characterization Of Xanthomonas Phaseoli Bacteriophages, Anne K. Vidaver, Max L. Schuster

Papers in Plant Pathology

Ten bacteriophages for Xanthomonas phaseoli were characterized. On the basis of adsorption rates, latent period and burst size, plaque morphology, host range, efficiency of plating, ultrastructure, sensitivity to osmotic shock, streptomycin sensitivity, temperature effects on plating efficiency, and serology, the phages were separated into at least three groups. Some of the phages were infectious for Pseudomonas phaseolicola (four strains) and P. syringae (one strain) in a narrow temperature range. The taxonomic and ecological significance of this finding is discussed.

Effects Of Metepa On Gametogenesis And Embryogenesis In The Large Milkweed Bug Oncopeltus Fasciatus (Dallas), Donald E. Lawson, Harold J. Ball Sep 1969

Effects Of Metepa On Gametogenesis And Embryogenesis In The Large Milkweed Bug Oncopeltus Fasciatus (Dallas), Donald E. Lawson, Harold J. Ball

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Considerable research is currently being directed toward discovering means of controlling insects other than by applying insecticides. There are several promising concepts of control which minimize the use of insecticides and one of these is the use of sterilizing techniques. Some emphasis is currently being placed on the development of chemosterilant techniques. Many of the studies have been concerned with the screening of potentially active chemicals, whereas other research has dealt with the efficacy of field application. The more basic work has been accomplished through the participation of several disciplines. The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects …

A New Full Orifice Disc Valve For Mitral Replacement, Rodman E. Taber, Yasuharu Imai Sep 1969

A New Full Orifice Disc Valve For Mitral Replacement, Rodman E. Taber, Yasuharu Imai

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Because of dissatisfaction with certain features of the currently available ball and disc valve prostheses when implanted in patients with mitral stenosis and a small volume left ventricle, a full orifice discoid valve has been designed which avoids many of these shortcomings. The valve has been tested mechanically in a pulse duplicator and compared lo existing prostheses. High speed cine studies were used to evaluate turbulence. Implantation was carried out in animals. Evaluation by these various methods indicates that the valve is satisfactory for human implantation and may have significant advantages over other artificial valves when used in patients with …

Stress Urinary Incontinence In The Human Female: Gravity And Ecomorphologic Influences On Bladder And Urethral Function Of The Human Female, C. Paul Hodgkinson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This study was undertaken to determine if the biped stale of the human female constituted a stress force in urethrovesical physiological function. To arrive at realistic conclusions, the ecomorphologic changes incidental to the conquest of gravity by the vertebrates have been reviewed. Accepting the evolutionary precepts as expressed by Hobart Smith that "if all parts of the evolutionary chain were known, it would be impossible to draw a logical distinction between man and nonman, Romer slated "Bone for bone, muscle for muscle, organ for organ, almost every feature of the ape is repeated in the human body. The differences are …

Morphology And Development Of The Flowers Of Boottia Cordata, Ottelia Alismoides, And Their Synthetic Hybrid (Hydrocharitaceae), Robert B. Kaul Sep 1969

Morphology And Development Of The Flowers Of Boottia Cordata, Ottelia Alismoides, And Their Synthetic Hybrid (Hydrocharitaceae), Robert B. Kaul

Faculty Publications in the Biological Sciences

The inferior ovary of Boottia cordata, Ottelia alismoides, and their hybrid is appendicular in nature, the carpels are congenitally only slightly connate, and they are unsealed. All floral organs except the sepals originate from common primordia in the female and bisexual flowers. A flat residual floral apex is present. There is a vestigial superior ovary of three ontogeneticallv fused carpels in the male flower of Boottia cordata. The hybrid is intermediate in many characteristics and has partially fertile stamens and staminodia. The sequence of development in all flowers is acropetal. These plants appear to be related to …

Bibliography Of The Monogenetic Trematode Literature Of The World, 1758 To 1969, W. J. Hargis Jr., A. R. Lawler, R. Morales-Alamo, D. E. Zwerner

Reports

In preparing this bibliography we have attempted to collect all literature references pertaining to the Monogenea. Accordingly it represents an up-to-date (through September 1969) guide to the literature of these parasites, and is of maximum scope, including not only taxonomic literature but also references to ecological and physiological studies on Monogenea as well as reports of preferred methods of treating infestations of these parasites.

Variation Within Herds Under Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck Aug 1969

Variation Within Herds Under Different Housing Systems, G. R. Wiggans, L. Dale Van Vleck

Faculty Papers and Publications in Animal Science

New York Holstein herds (1,152) including 75,875 cows were classified by housing system (stanchions, free stalls, and other combinations). Records initiated in these herds from 1964 to 1968 were used to determine the degree to which housing type might affect variance of milk production records in herds with 45 or more cows.

The within-herd variances by lactation for each housing system in each year-season were examined by Bartlett's test for nonhomogeneity among housing systems. Records in the stanchion systems were less variable than those in free-stall systems. This difference was not large enough to require adjustment for type of housing …

A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of The Desmids Of Lily Lake, James L. Pederson Aug 1969

A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of The Desmids Of Lily Lake, James L. Pederson

Theses and Dissertations

During the summero f 1964 a taxonomica and ecological study was made of the desmids (microscopic green algae) found in Lily Lake. The study site is a subalpine lake in the Wasatch National Forest of the Uinta Mountains, Utah. The lake is located about one-half mile west of Trial Lake at an elevation of approximately 10,000 feet. The lake is an acidic, cold, lentic bog pond characteristic of this region. Desmids were collected at weekly intervals from seven sampling sites. The water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, light conditions and length of day from sunrise to sunset were recorded at the …

Discrimination Reversal Learning As An Index Of Memory In Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus., Waneta Kay Coester Aug 1969

Discrimination Reversal Learning As An Index Of Memory In Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus., Waneta Kay Coester

Biology ETDs

Spermophilus tridecemlineatus were trained to solve a simple visual discrimination problem. Following a 15-day non-training period the ground squirrels were trained on-a series of five discrimination reversal problems. Criterion and non-correction procedures were followed during original and reversal training. During the non-training period one half of the subjects (Group I) remained in the training laboratory and the remainder of the animals (Group II) hibernated.

It was possible to train the animals to solve the original discrimination and the reversal problems. No statistically significant differences were observed between performances on consecutive problems. However, differences approaching statistical significance were observed between performances …

An Economic Analysis Of Some Aspects Of Medical Service Availability In Northwest South Dakota, Leland G. Bierman Aug 1969

An Economic Analysis Of Some Aspects Of Medical Service Availability In Northwest South Dakota, Leland G. Bierman

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

A community which has its own hospital and doctor is benefited in many ways. First, the people in the community are near medical care in times of emergency. Second, hospital patients from the community are near family and friends when receiving care. Third, a community may be benefited economically by the presence of a hospital facility because additional jobs are provided, and people from the surrounding area are given increased incentive to come to the town in purchasing other goods. Also, adequate medical services are of importance in attracting new industry into a town. The trend today, however, is away …
