The morphological development of Elberta peach fruit buds was studied in relation to their cold hardiness.

Morphological development of peach fruit buds was observed beginning with bud differentiation in mid-summer. Flower initiation was essentially complete by September. Growth was slow in the winter months but increased rapidly as anthesis approached. Photomicrographs were taken to substantiate the discussion .

Cold hardiness determinations were made from December until anthesis in April. The hardiness level was greatest during December and remained at a relatively high level until rest ended. Hardiness decreased thereafter. Major losses of hardiness occurred just prior to anthesis.

The direct effects of chemically- induced reduced transpiration on soil moisture were studied in a sub-watershed of the greater Logan River drainage.

No statistically significant differences occurred among the total amounts of water transpired by the treated and control units.

The seasonal low points of soil moisture, in September, showed no significant differences in final moisture retention for the two years studied, either for the control or the treated portions of the study site.

The 1967 season showed a lag in soil moisture depletion compared to the 1966 season. Although a later spring in 1967 may have aided in the …

Morphological and anatomical effects of pyrazon, 5-amino-4-chloro-2-phenyl-3(2H)-pyridazinone, on Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Amaranthus retroflexus L. were studied after treatment of seeds or seedlings at various pyrazon concentration, exposure times and environmental regimes.

Beans treated with pyrazon developed various chlorotic and necrotic symptoms on the unifoliate leaves. Chlorosis and necrosis were observed first on the leaf margins. Beans treated with pyrazon under a complete dark regime developed symptoms much later than those under an alternating light and dark regime. Pyrazon treated pigweed displayed symptoms similar to those on beans.

Shortwave solar radiation was measured in the late winter of 1967 by means of actinographs below the canopy of two lodgepole pine stands, one thinned and the other unthinned, in northern Utah. Observations were made at four randomly selected stations in each stand and at one station in a large clearing. Radiation available below the thinned and unthinned stands was compared, and radiation in the open was compared with radiation beneath each stand.

Nearly all differences between stands were significant as were the differences between each stand and the open area.

Simazine and dalapon have been used to control weeds in many crops during the last few years, but in 1963, when this study was begun, their uses in fruit orchards were limited. To study the effects of simazine and dalapon both on the control of weeds and on various metabolic changes in apple (Malis pumila), Montmorency sour cherry (Prunus cerasus), sweet cherry (Prunus avium), and Prunus mahaleb root stock, experiments were conducted from 1964 through 1966 in both the field and in the greenhouse.

A method was developed for the extraction of rennet from fresh frozen vells. Frozen vells were partially thawed and minced in a Hobart "Wonder worker." The tissue was treated with 2.0 per cent potassium alum and allowed to stand for 20 hours before sufficient 0.45 M disodium phosphate was added to bring the pH of the mixture to 5.7. Dry sodium chloride was added until the salt concentration in the moisture of the mixture was 10 per cent. The tissue was then mixed with 3/4-inch pumice gravel in a volume ratio of 1 to 2 and packed into extractor columns. …

The effect of oven temperature, dry-roasting, and breed on the eating quality of beef was determined by sensory and objective methods. Two adjacent standing rib and two adjacent chuck roasts of prime, choice, and good grades from animals of Hereford, Shorthorn, and Charolais breeding were dry-roasted. Control roasts (9-12th ribs) were cooked at 325 F. Experimental roasts (6-8th rib and two chucks) were assigned an oven temperature of 325 or 250 F at random. All roasts were allowed to reach ah internal temperature of 155 F as recorded on a potentiometer.

The Agricultural Credit Corporation was established to provide farmers with credit at a relatively low cost. Without the low cost loans many farmers cannot stay on their farms. The effects of petroleum mulches on plant response to herbicides were studied at the Farmington Field Station. The herbicides were applied to the soil preemergent and by incorporation at one-half, normal and double the recommended rates with asphalt overlay. The herbicides and crops used were: Atrazine and Ramrod on sweet corn, PEBC and Diphenamid on tomatoes and EPTC and Trifluralin on snap beans.

Germination, overall crop rating, grass and broad leafed weed control and yields were measured. Data recorded from these trials showed that herbicides are as effective under the asphalt when compared to plots with herbicide but no asphalt. …

A survey of 360 respondents in metropolitan Salt Lake City was made to determine their attitudes about fluid milk products and the affect of these attitudes on consumption levels. The fluid milk products studied were regular whole milk, two percent milk, skim milk, and nonfat dry (powdered) milk.

The respondents had the most positive attitudes about regular whole milk. Their attitudes about the other three products were highest for those which most nearly resembled regular whole milk. The consumption levels of the four products followed the same pattern.

The respondents' attitudes about four attitude parameters affected their consumption levels. Those …

In May 1965, the first investigation and research in the native desert bighorn sheep in Utah was undertaken. The study was centered in the White Canyon area, San Juan County, in southeastern Utah. Seven other areas along the Colorado River were found to have smaller reminant populations of desert bighorns.

The White Canyon population was determined to be between 124 and 144 desert bighorns (Ovis canadensis nelsoni), excluding lambs.

A study of nucleic acid changes influenced by gibberellic acid and chilling treatments in peach seed was performed in an attempt to reach a better understanding of the mechanism involved in breaking seed dormancy.

Gibberellic acid and the chilling treatment increased the RNA content. These two treatments which break dormancy also increased RNA, suggesting a similar mechanism involving RNA. Chilled seeds contained more RNA than did the gibberellic acid treated seeds.

DNA content remained unchanged regardless of treatment.

Dry seed had a greater ribonuclease activity than with soaked seeds. Enzyme changes did not correlate well with the RNA content in …

Soil moisture recharge was studied in quaking aspen and Gambel oak forest areas of central Utah. The rate, timing, and duration of the recharge period was observed. Soil moisture readings were taken periodically throughout the winter of 1966 -1967.

Soil moisture recharge begins in October and continues until May. The period of most rapid increase in recharge is between February and May. This corresponds to a rapid decrease in the zenith angle of the sun at the surface of the area and also to a decrease in cloud cover over the area.

The effects of controlled atmosphere on the metabolism of Golden Delicious and Rome Beauty apples, Anjou pears, and Lambert and Bing cherries were studied with respect to changes caused in the normal metabolic functions carried on during storage of these fruits. Atmospheres consisting of 1.5 per cent CO2 and 2.5 per cent O2 for the apples and pears and 10.5 per cent CO2 and 2.5 per cent O2 for the cherries were employed.

Using radioautography 14C simazine, 14C EPTC, 14C 2,4-D, 1414 DCPA and 14C pyrazon absorption by seeds of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), squash (Cucurbita maxima), corn (Zea mays), onion (Allium cepa) and oat (Avena sativa) was studied. Simazine, EPTC, 2,4-D and pyrazon were absorbed through the seed coat of bean, squash, corn and onion, the amount increasing with time. The characteristics of tourists visiting Utah that are pertinent to defining target markets for the direction of state promotion programs were studied and analyzed during the summer of 1966.

Five significant geographical-party composition target markets were identified as prospective tourist markets. These were California families, East-West North Central families, Western families, East-West North Central couples, and California couples.

Target markets of enroute tourist parties were also identified for instate promotional efforts. The markets identified were divided on their relative degree of vacation planning and willingness to deviate from a planned route to visit additional attractions.

The secondary or external benefits of increasing the availability of water for irrigation and changing the allocation of an existing water supply was analyzed from a theoretical point of view.

"Input-output" models for Cache County, Utah, and for the state of Utah were used to indicate the intersectoral relationship of water used by agriculture and other sectors in each economy.

During 1966 and 1967, a range plant clipping study was conducted at two locations in central Utah's Ephraim Canyon. It was found that extreme clipping treatment resulted in a significant increase in soil moisture due to a presumed decrease in transpiration during 1967. At the lower location, 7,100 feet elevation, a difference of 5.4 inches over a 5 foot soil profile was noted between the extreme and control clipping treatments in 1967. At the upper location, 10,000 feet in elevation, a savings of 3.6 inches soil moisture was observed over the 5 foot soil profile in 1967. Other clipping intensities …

A study of bottom invertebrates on the lower Logan River, Logan, Utah was conducted from June 1966 to July 1967. One objective was to evaluate on a qualitative and quantitative basis the invertebrate populations above and below a sewage entry in the river. Another objective was to study the year-round fluctuations in the invertebrate population.

The greatest variety of invertebrates was found in the summer. Chironomidae and Baetis were the only two groups found in abundance over the entire year.

Populations were reduced during autumn when water levels rose, and they declined even more sharply during the spring flood.

The effect Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Lactobacillus plantarum has on the physical and chemical properties of fresh and dehydrated sauerkraut was tested. Sauerkraut inoculated with L. plantarum was slower in fermenting and significantly lower in acidity and higher in pH. Dehydration of sauerkraut by freeze-conventional hot-air and micro-wave processes produced a significant loss in volatile components, ascorbic acid , lactic acid and an increase in pH. Each of the dehydration processes caused browning of the sauerkraut . These changes were less with freeze-drying and increased with conventional hot-air drying and microwave drying. A sample of agricultural parcels in Salt Lake County, Utah was analyzed to determine the effects on assessed values and per acre taxes under alternative assessment methods; assessment according to market value or agricultural value (preferential treatment).

The assessed value changes and tax shifting between all classes of taxable property in the county were calculated with and without the preferential assessment of agricultural land and at assessment levels equalized for all classes.

The wild lands recreational resources of the canyon country of southeastern Utah were analyzed within an evaluation framework specific to the region. Patterns of recreation development were established and recommendations for planning were submitted.

The study area was found to be richly endowed with environmental recreation resources and opportunities. Contributing environmental factors included the uniqueness, diversity, configuration, and/or abundance of the scenic, water, climatic, and primitive resources. An unusually wide spectrumquality opportunities were present.

The data analysis indicated that travel distance, user age, and user income level are important determinants of use of trout streams.

These variables were incorporated into regression analysis to develop a use-prediction model.

This use-prediction model was used to determine predicted use levels of sample streams. The predicted use levels combined with travel costs and expenditures on new fishing equipment were used to derive a statistical estimate of the demand schedules for the sample streams.

These statistical demand curves were subjected to consumer surplus procedures to determine the values of the sample streams.

In an attempt to describe, explain, and show the demographic significance of annual variations in the nesting distribution of Uinta ground squirrels, a study was conducted during the summers of 1964 through 1967 in northern Utah. Procedures included both trapping and direct observation.

It was found that females tended to nest in open, previously inhabited, grassy areas. Males resided throughout a variety of habitats.

This typical nesting distribution was established initially in the summer by juveniles shortly after they first appeared aboveground. The extent to which the distribution was maintained the following spring depended largely upon the number of female …
