Hospital Involvement In Regional Medical Programs, Robert M. O'Bryan Dec 1968

Hospital Involvement In Regional Medical Programs, Robert M. O'Bryan

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The purpose of Regional Medical Programs is to improve the care of patients with heart disease. cancer, stroke or related diseases. Rather than subsidizing the cost of patient care, the program encourages the medical profession and medical institutions to establish voluntary, cooperative arrangements that will result in making the latest advances in these diseases available to patients. Programs are planned and implemented at local (Regional) levels through broad-based decision-making processes. This paper reviews five Regional Medical Programs with emphasis on various approaches hospitals are using to implement the program, and lists six criteria applicable to developing operational activities.

Simple Methods For Detection Of Bacteriuria In The Physician's Office, E. G. Heinze Jr., A. Hodari, T. Connolly, D. Jones, F. Cox, E. L. Quinn

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Two simplified quantitative urine culture techniques, suitable for use in the physician's office, were shown to be reliable and practical. The miniature culture method (Testuria) and flood-plate technique gave comparable quantitative results, and the latter also yielded prompt information of organism specificity which was helpful in judging the significance of the culture findings.

Endometrial Carcinoma: Report Of 441 Cases From Henry Ford Hospital 1923 Through 1963, Roy B. Patton Dec 1968

Endometrial Carcinoma: Report Of 441 Cases From Henry Ford Hospital 1923 Through 1963, Roy B. Patton

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The study here presented is an historical examination of endometrial carcinoma at Henry Ford Hospital. A modified life table was constructed to estimate survivorship, and selected clinical features related to the patient's endocrine status were examined. Pathological findings associated with endocrine abnormalities in the ovaries were enumerated. The results of histologic grading of the tumors are presented, and the incidence and location of other primary malignant tumors in these patients are discussed.

Serum Immunoglobulins In The Differential Diagnosis Between Intrahepatic Viral Jaundice And Extrahepatic Obstructive Jaundice, Gerald A. Logrippo, Thomas A. Fox, Melvin A. Block Dec 1968

Serum Immunoglobulins In The Differential Diagnosis Between Intrahepatic Viral Jaundice And Extrahepatic Obstructive Jaundice, Gerald A. Logrippo, Thomas A. Fox, Melvin A. Block

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Serum immunoglobulin levels are reported in 75 patients with jaundice: 32 with jaundice due to virus hepatitis and 43 with jaundice due to obstruction. The degrees and variations of serum immunoglobulins (Ig), (IgM, IgG and IgA) in virus hepatitis (IH and SH) with jaundice are compared with those found in obstructive jaundice. In 32 of the patients with jaundice from virus hepatitis, serum IgM (100%) and IgG (75%) were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values. Neither IgM nor IgG levels were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values in 33 of 43 patients (76.7%) with …

Enzyme Histochemistry Of The Human Carotid Body, Gerald Fine, Pablo Enriquez, Azorides R. Morales Dec 1968

Enzyme Histochemistry Of The Human Carotid Body, Gerald Fine, Pablo Enriquez, Azorides R. Morales

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Histochemical enzymatic survey of 25 "normal" human carotid bodies removed at autopsy from patients three days to 83 years of age revealed a variety of oxidative and hydrolytic enzymes in the lobular and interlobular cells. The intensity of the reactions was greater in the lobular cells. Acid phosphatase was the only enzyme that was limited to the cells comprising the lobules.

Tetracycline-Based Measurements Of The Bone Dynamics In The Rib Of A Girl With Hyperphosphatasia, S. Jett, H. M. Frost Dec 1968

Tetracycline-Based Measurements Of The Bone Dynamics In The Rib Of A Girl With Hyperphosphatasia, S. Jett, H. M. Frost

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Tetracycline-based quantitative histological analysis was made of a rib biopsy taken from a girl afflicted with hyperphosphatasia. The study revealed essentially normal bone dynamics on trabeculae, but greatly increased turnover in the compacta, which was largely composed of woven bone. Since both bone resorption and lamellar bone formation could be unequivocally demonstrated on periosteal, Haversian, and cortical-endosteal surfaces, it is suggested that the direct cause of the cell behavioral abnormality responsible for this disease may arise locally within the bone, but external to the bone cells. Because of its familial nature, however, the ultimate cause probably represents an inborn intracellular …

Management Of Massive Hemoptysis, Eduardo Arciniegas, Conrad R. Lam Dec 1968

Management Of Massive Hemoptysis, Eduardo Arciniegas, Conrad R. Lam

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Massive hemoptysis demands immediate investigation and treatment. Bronchoscopy done while the bleeding is active is essential to accurate localization of the site of origin and the cause of hemorrhage. Emergency pulmonary resection should be carried out if death is to be prevented by suffocation or exsanguination. Illustrative cases are presented.

The Transfer Of Hydrogen In The Reduction Of Progesterone, William H. Kersey Aug 1968

The Transfer Of Hydrogen In The Reduction Of Progesterone, William H. Kersey

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Experimental female rats were given daily injections of synthetic estrogens for six months. The effect on rat ovarian 20α-OH-SDH was not definitive. Diethylstilbestrol and 17α-ethynylestradiol caused a significant drop in activity as compared with controls while mestranol caused a slight increase in activity. A synthetic progestin, medroxyprogesterone, had no apparent effect on the activity of the enzyme.

Rat ovarian 20α-OH-SDH was purified fivefold by ammonium sulfate fractionation and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose.

The homogeneity of the enzyme was checked by means of disc gel electrophoresis. At pH 8.2 no significant contamination appeared in the electrophoretic pattern, but at pH 9.0 five …
