A Survey Of The Breakfast And Snack Habits Of Adventist And Non-Adventist Adolescents, Consuelo A. Bustista

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A study was undertaken to survey by questionnaire and interview methods the breakfast and snack habits of Adventist and non-Adventist adolescents. The purposes of the study were: (I) to find out if there is any difference in the practices of Adventist and non-Adventist teenagers, and (2) to determine their attitudes toward snacking and omission of breakfast.

Results of the questionnaire were coded, punched onto IBM cards, and fed into computing machines for item and statistical analysis. Chi-square test analyses were done on denominational classification against some questions of interest to show any significant differences between Adventist and non-Adventist students' responses. …

Carbon Dioxide Fixation In Schistosoma Mansoni, Clint Earl Carter Jun 1967

Carbon Dioxide Fixation In Schistosoma Mansoni, Clint Earl Carter

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Adults of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni were perfused from the hepatic portal system of CF1 female mice sixty to seventy days post infection. The worms were then incubated in Eagle’s minimal essential medium with glutamate and 0.03 mg/100 ml of nonlabelled aspartic acid. To this medium was added 10 μc of either NaH1403, glucose-UC14 or aspartate-4-C14. The worms were found to fix carbon from the NaH1403 and to incorporate the glucose and aspartate. The amount of activity recovered in five different chemical fractions after two hours incubation was determined …

The Nitrogen Nutrition Of Emmonsia (Moniliales, Aleurismaceae), Gary L. Bradley Jun 1967

The Nitrogen Nutrition Of Emmonsia (Moniliales, Aleurismaceae), Gary L. Bradley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The questions posed in this research concerned both the comparison of the nitrogen nutrition between Emmonsia parva and Emmonsia crescens and the comparative nitrogen utilization within the species. This fungus is a parasite with a rather uncomplicated life-cycle. Thus it lends itself well to study of the host-parasite relationship at the molecular level. This research contributes toward that long-range goal.

Five replicate floating cultures of each species were grown in 125 ml Erlenmeyer flasks containing a chemically defined basal medium plus one of the 29 nitrogen sources tested. Utilization of a particular source was determined by dry weight. The results …

Structure Of Two Cover Types Of Southern Oak Woodland In California, Henry A. Zuill Jun 1967

Structure Of Two Cover Types Of Southern Oak Woodland In California, Henry A. Zuill

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The southern oak woodland of southern California was analysed relative to the local distribution of the trees, density per acre, relative density, relative dominance, percentage of trees growing in close association to boulders, percentage of trees forked below breast height, frequencies of tree diameter and percentage of cover. These characteristics, with the exception of cover, were derived from measurements made using the wandering quarter method. Cover was computed from measurements made on aerial photographs.

A test for homogeneity applied to the distance measurements divided the woodland into two groups relative to local distribution. Both woodlands are non-random with one (dense …

A Study Of The Calcium, Phosphorus And Magnesium Balance In Phenylketonuric Children, Rita Go Wong Jun 1967

A Study Of The Calcium, Phosphorus And Magnesium Balance In Phenylketonuric Children, Rita Go Wong

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The calcium, phosphorus and magnesium retention of six female phenylketonuric children was studied to determine whether the percentage retention of these minerals would be comparable to the values for normal children established by Lutwak and Macy. 73,78,79 A constant diet was given to the subjects and carmine was used as stool marker. The food and fecal specimens were analyzed for calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and total lipids. Urinary specimens were analyzed for calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and creatinine. Calcium and magnesium levels were determined in the serum of four subjects. The percentage of retention of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium was determined from …

Nutritional Relationship Between The Copepod Parasite Charopinus Dentatus (Wilson) (Lernaeopodidae) And The Skate Host, Raja Binoculata Girard, Donald W. Rigby Jun 1967

Nutritional Relationship Between The Copepod Parasite Charopinus Dentatus (Wilson) (Lernaeopodidae) And The Skate Host, Raja Binoculata Girard, Donald W. Rigby

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Of 1,798 parasitic copepods, Charopinus dentatus (Wilson), collected from the skate host, Raja, binoculata Girard, 1,615 (89.87.) were obtained from the mucosa lining the mouth and pharynx. None were collected from the gill filaments. Host tissue damage was not seen grossly or microscopically around the attached parasite nor did the gut contents of female parasites give evidence microscopically or chemically that they are blood feeders. Green material from the gut of female parasites was made up of cell-like structures occurring singly and in clumps. Spectrophotometrically this material demonstrated spectral maxima (670, 410 'FM) similar to maxima of degradative products of …

Vegetable Entrees In Nitrogen Balance And Obesity Studies, Gloria Tyndall Jun 1967

Vegetable Entrees In Nitrogen Balance And Obesity Studies, Gloria Tyndall

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The first study was designed to evaluate by the nitrogen balance method the protein quality of a pure-vegetarian diet containing about 6 grams of nitrogen per day. The group as a whole maintained nitrogen equilibrium the average being - 0.11 grams of nitrogen per day. Two subjects were not in nitrogen balance, however, factors other than diet may have contributed to these results and are discussed in the thesis. Hemoglobin, serum cholesterol and total serum proteins did not change significantly during the study. The average true digestibility of 5 of the subjects was 85 percent. It was concluded that this …

The Effect Of Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Donald F. Adams Jun 1967

The Effect Of Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Donald F. Adams

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Samples of blood were obtained from thirty healthy young adult males (Loma Linda University School of Dentistry), and contaminated with bacteria. Varying concentrations of pure glucose were added to this mixture to observe the effect of the glucose on in vitro neutrophilic phagocytosis. As the glucose levels increased a statistically significant suppression was noted in the ability of the neutrophilic leukocytes to engulf Staphylococcus epidermidis.

It was not possible, however, to predict the degree of suppression for any particular level of glucose added nor is it possible to state that suppression will occur in any one individual.

Two methods of …

Tumor Production In The Hamster After Oral Inoculation Of Polyoma Virus, Douglas Jonathan Wear Jun 1967

Tumor Production In The Hamster After Oral Inoculation Of Polyoma Virus, Douglas Jonathan Wear

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

One-half of the newborn hamsters orally inoculated with polyoma virus developed tumors within the interval of observation, whereas all of the newborn hamsters inoculated by the more conventional routes of virus inoculation (the subcutaneous and the intraperitoneal routes) eventually developed tumors. The death rate in the orally infected hamsters was less than that of either of the other two inoculated groups, and the age at occurrence of the first death in this group of hamsters was several days later than in the other two groups. In the course of tumor formation in the heart, lungs, liver, and kidney of the …

Mandibular And Alveolar Growth In Dog Following Infusion Of 5-Fluorouricil, Richard D. Pfeiffer Jun 1967

Mandibular And Alveolar Growth In Dog Following Infusion Of 5-Fluorouricil, Richard D. Pfeiffer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The action of a chemotherapeutic agent as a tool in studying its effect upon a primary growth center, the mandibular condyle, was investigated. So far as can be ascertained, no studies have been reported where these growth sites have been eliminated or modified by the use of chemotherapeutic growth inhibitors.

Observation of mandibular and alveolar growth following the infusion into the left external carotid artery of a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, 5-Fluorouricil (Roach-Hoffman), was noted. Comparisons were made between the infused and the uninfused sides of the mandible observing gross growth changes.

Four dogs, aged 75 days, were infused with varying …
