Use Of Shoot-Root Grafts In Case Studies Of Site Of O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Synthesis In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Use Of Shoot-Root Grafts In Case Studies Of Site Of O-Hydroxycinnamic Acid Synthesis In Melilotus Alba, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The content of o-hydroxycinnamic acid was measured in shoot-root grafts involving four combinations of Melilotus alba plants of the CuCuBB and cucuBB genotypes. Six portions from each grafted plant were assayed. Results provide evidence that o-hydroxycinnamic acid synthesis occurs in the above-ground parts of sweetclover plants, with limited translocation to the roots. No support was obtained for the view that the root plays an important role in o-hydroxycinnamic acid synthesis.
Studies Of Cesium-137 Metabolism By Blatta Orientalis In Various Thermal Environments., Tsin Fu Chuang
Studies Of Cesium-137 Metabolism By Blatta Orientalis In Various Thermal Environments., Tsin Fu Chuang
Biology ETDs
The effect of temperature on cesium-137 metabolism in the oriental cockroach, Blatta orientalis, was studied. Adult and nymphal animals were fed cesium-137 to investigate the biological half-time, excretion rate, retention curve and distribution of the isotope among body tissues.
Metabolic rate studies at different temperatures showed an exponential relationship between oxygen consumption and temperature. The Q10 was 2.56 for adults and 2.20 for nymphs in the 10 C – 35 C range.
Cesium-137 elimination rate increased as environmental temperature increased. The Q10 for cesium-137 elimination was constant (1.2) over the 15 C – 35 C range and greatly …

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Proposed Endangered Status For The American Burying Beetle
Endangered Species Bulletin
The Service proposes to determine endangered status for the American burying beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus) and thereby provide the species protection under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. Once widely distributed throughout eastern North America, this species has disappeared from most of its former range. Two known populations currently exist, one in eastern Oklahoma and the other on an island off the coast of New England. Despite extensive efforts to locate additional populations, only two specimens have been found elsewhere in more than 10 years. The cause of the species’ decline is unknown. Critical habitat is not …

Mosquitoes Of The Cheyenne Bottoms Waterfowl Management Area, Barton County, Kansas, John J. Janovy Jr.
Mosquitoes Of The Cheyenne Bottoms Waterfowl Management Area, Barton County, Kansas, John J. Janovy Jr.
John Janovy Publications
Studies of the local biology of eleven species of mosquitoes in a prairie marsh in central Kansas revealed that "floodwater" species (Aedes dorsalis, A. nigromaculis, A. sollicitans, A. vexans, Psorophora ciliata, P. cyanescens) formed a major portion of the total mosquito population and were the principal pests after early June. Culex tarsalis was the most numerous single species and was captured in large numbers even during the hot, dry period from mid-July to late August. Culiseta inornata was plentiful in early spring and fall, but virtually absent from late May to mid-September. Culex pipiens, Orthopodomyia signijera, and …

Stamp Out Chickweed And Henbit From Alfalfa, J. W. Herron, Warren C. Thompson
Agronomy Notes
What are chickweed and henbit?
Chickweed and henbit are winter annual weeds that grow during cool weather. The seeds germinate primarily in the fall, and the plants continue to grow and live through the winter. They develop new seeds from April until early summer. Then they die.
