The objective of this study was to examine the influence of 17β-estradiol (E2) on distribution of LH and FSH isoforms during the follicular phase of the bovine estrous cycle prior to the preovulatory surges of LH and FSH. On Day 16 of the estrous cycle (Day 0 = estrus), intact controls (CONT; n = 4) were treated with prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) to induce luteal regression and initiation of the follicular phase. U.S. farm policies are reviewed, every five years concurrent with the drafting of new farm legislation. The present farm bill expires in 1995, and a new bill will be debated and enacted in 1995. Since farm and food policies have a major impact on farmers, information on their preferences with regard to these policies are invaluable to legislators as well as to different advocacy groups (working for farmers). The research was completed as a part of a 15 state study to document the agricultural and food policy preferences by agricultural producers. This report deals with the policy preferences of South …

Daughter Cells Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae From Old Mothers Display A Reduced Life Span, Nicanor Austriaco, Brian K. Kennedy, Leonard Guarente

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae typically divides asymmetrically to give a large mother cell and a smaller daughter cell. As mother cells become old, they enlarge and produce daughter cells that are larger than daughters derived from young mother cells. We found that occasional daughter cells were indistinguishable in size from their mothers, giving rise to a symmetric division. The frequency of symmetric divisions became greater as mother cells aged and reached a maximum occurrence of 30% in mothers undergoing their last cell division. Symmetric divisions occurred similarly in rad9 and ste12 mutants. Strikingly, daughters from old mothers, whether they arose …

Characterization Of General Esterases From Susceptible And Parathion-Resistant Strains Of The Greenbug (Homoptera: Aphididae), Midori Ono, Jonathan S. Richman, Blair Siegfried

A susceptible and two parathion-resistant strains of the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), exhibit three different patterns of general esterase isozymes in native polyacrylamide electrophoresis gels. Characterization of general esterase activity using α -naphtholic esters as model substrates indicated that the three strains differed in isozyme composition. The type-I1 strain, which had the highest level of resistance, exhibited the highest levels of general esterase activity under all assay conditions, and the type-I strain had consistently higher levels than the susceptible strain. In all three strains, these esterases were more active toward α -naphtholic esters with side chains of six or fewer …

Isolation Of Three Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine- Degrading Species Of The Family Enterobacteriaceae From Nitramine Explosive-Contaminated Soil, Christopher Kitts, Daryl P. Cunningham, Pat J. Unkefer

Three species of the family Enterobacteriaceae that biochemically reduced hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) were isolated from nitramine explosive-contaminated soil. Two isolates, identified as Morganella morganii and Providencia rettgeri, completely transformed both RDX and the nitroso-RDX reduction intermediates. The third isolate, identified as Citrobacter freundii, partially transformed RDX and generated high concentrations of nitroso-RDX intermediates. All three isolates produced 14CO2 from labeled RDX under O2-depleted culture conditions. While all three isolates transformed HMX, only M. morganii transformed HMX in the presence of RDX.

This booklet provides land managers with information relating to the natural resources of the Shire of Tammin including the existing vegetation, drainage systems and soils. Some of the problems relating to the management of natural vegetation resources in the Shire of Tammin and possible solutions to these problems are also discussed. By providing this information it is hoped this booklet will contribute to the long term viability of the agricultural landscape and the conservation of native vegetation within the Shire.

Nipple watering systems for broilers have become very popular in recent years. This is mainly because these systems save labor by eliminating the chore of cleaning waterers. Although labor is greatly reduced with nipple watering systems, this does not mean that they require less management. In fact, nipple waterers demand more time, knowledge and effort to operate properly than do open systems. Problems caused by insufficient or improper management of nipple watering systems can have a serious impact on broiler performance.

It is Department of Agriculture policy that regulation is only used when all other approaches to address land degradation have failed. Our thrust is to encourage land holders to move towards using land within its capabilities as they continue to adopt sustainable farming systems. Underlying this approach is a self regulatory philosophy with land conservation district committees playing an important management and coordination role. Nevertheless the community expects that land degradation will be controlled and legislation is available to underpin or complement the good intentions of most land holders. Trees from East Texas loblolly ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash ( Pinus effiottii Engelm. ) pine plantations are one of the sources of raw material for conversion into products such as paper, veneer and lumber by East Texas forest product mills. The utilization of the planted trees may depend on various biological and economical factors. Factors such as tree size, tree condition, stumpage prices and interest rates can play a role in the merchandizing process.

The quality of TOPEX/POSEIDON determinations of the global scale dynamic ocean topography have been assessed by determining mean topography solutions for successive 10-day repeat cycles and by examining the temporal changes in the sea surface topography to identify known features. The assessment is based on the analysis of TOPEX altimeter data for cycles 1 through 36. Important errors in the tide model used to correct the altimeter data have been identified. The errors were reduced significantly by use of a new tide model derived with the TOPEX/POSEIDON measurements. Maps of the global 1-year mean topography, produced using four of the …

Phylogenetic analysis of the subfamilies of the Trichostrongylidae based on 22 morphological transformation series produced a single cladogram with a consistency index (CI) = 74.2%. Monophyly for the family was supported by the structure of the female tail and copulatory bursa. Two major clades are recognized: the Cooperiinae clade with the basal Cooperiinae and Libyostrongylinae + Trichostrongylinae, and the Graphidiinae clade with the basal Graphidiinae and Ostertagiinae + Haemonchinae. Dendrograms presented by Durette- Desset (1985) (CI = 56.1%) and Lichtenfels (1987), based on the key to the Trichostrongylidae by Gibbons and Khalil (1982) (CI = 59.0%), were found to be …

Intermediate and definitive host specificity of Rhabdochona canadensis in Nebraska were investigated. Mayfly nymphs Trichorythodes sp. and Caenis sp. were found to serve as experimental intermediate hosts. Development inside the nymphs required approximately 10 days, with the worms passing through two molts and then becoming encapsulated in the hemocoel as infective third-stage juveniles. Survey data revealed that only the red shiner Cyprinella lutrensis serves as definitive host for R. canadensis in nature. Laboratory infections of Notropis dorsalis, N. stramineus, and Fundulus zebrinus. all of which were uninfected in nature, were attempted to determine if observed specificity was due …

Second intermediate host-specificity was examined for two species of the frog lung fluke genus Haematoloechus. Nine species of freshwater arthropods were exposed to cercariae of H. complexus and H. medioplexus. Metacercariae of H. complexus developed in all arthropod species used. Metacercariae of H. medioplexus developed only in anisopteran odonate naiads. This difference in host utilization may have epizootiological implications. The potential development of H. complexus in a greater number of arthropods than H. medioplexus may increase the chances of ingestion of H. complexus by an anuran host. The range of arthropods parasitized by H. complexus indicates that host-specificity …

A Survey Of Source And Finished Water Supplies For Giardia Cysts And Cryptosporidium Oocysts, Lisa Martin Sexton

The occurrence of Giardia lamblia cysts and Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts was determined from source and treated drinking water supplies at selected water treatment facilities in Eastern Kentucky. Giardia and Cryptosporidium are two human protozoan parasites often found in water supplies due to fecal contamination. Characteristic cysts and oocysts were identified from large volume water samples, typically 100 gallons for raw samples and 1,000 gallons for finished water, using an indirect fluorescent antibody specific for Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Correlation Between Precolonization Of Trigeminal Ganglia By Attenuated Strains Of Pseudorabies Virus And Resistance To Wild-Type Virus Latency, L. M. Schang, G. F. Kutish, Fernando A. Osorio

We compared the levels of latent pseudorabies virus (PRV) DNA in trigeminal ganglia (TG) of pigs after intranasal inoculation of different PRV strains by using quantitative DNA PCR. The extent of colonization attained in each case varied significantly according to the type of strain and inoculum dose, wild-type (WT) PRV being the most efficient strain in colonizing TG. When groups of pigs representing different levels of precolonization of TG with an attenuated PRV strain were challenged with WT PRV, it became evident that there is a statistically significant inverse correlation between the extent of precolonization attained by an attenuated PRV …

A cell/molecular biologist challenges the thesis that science and religion are two ways of experiencing and interpreting the world and explores instead the possible ways that the modern biological worldview might serve as a resource for religious perspectives. Three concepts—meaning, valuation, and purpose—are argued to be central to the entire biological enterprise, and the continuation of this enterprise is regarded as a sacred religious trust.

This booklet provides rural communities with information relating to the natural resources of the Shire of York including the original and existing vegetation, fauna and flora, drainage systems, topography and soils. Some of the problems relating to the management of natural vegetation resources in the Shire of York and community initiatives to address these problems are also discussed. It is hoped that this information will contribute to the long term viability of the agricultural landscape and the conservation of native vegetation within the Shire.
