A winter with very cold temperatures in 2017–2018 allowed for good separation of standard and experimental bermudagrasses for freezing tolerance. When evaluated in May 2018, survival of commonly used cultivars was: Tifway, 0%; Latitude 36, 20%; Northbridge, 25%. Some experimental progeny had up to 98% winter survival on the same rating date.

More than 2,800 zoysiagrass progeny, all having a single parent in common that exhibited tolerance to large patch, were evaluated in several transition zone states for quality characteristics and large patch tolerance. From these evaluations conducted over several years, 10 progeny have been identified for further evaluation that have good quality and large patch tolerance that is superior to Meyer zoysiagrass.

This project identifies turfgrass practices to conserve water by optimizing nitrogen (N) fertilization and irrigation strategies. Turfgrass is the most irrigated crop by area (163,800 km2), accounting for 1.9% of the continental U.S. This causes negative environmental impacts and puts the future of irrigated turfgrass in question due to increasing water scarcity, especially in the western U.S. More information is needed on how to irrigate in droughts as turf provides significant benefits in our environment such as aesthetics, cooling effects, carbon sequestration, and preventing soil erosion.

Grass reference evapotranspiration (ETo) obtained from weather stations in open locations is often used to estimate irrigation requirements of turfgrass in local or regional urban lawns. However, the environments of urban lawns are often altered by surrounding buildings, trees, etc., to form various microclimates that may alter evapotranspiration (ET). Our research, which placed weather stations in urban lawns and nearby open swards of turfgrass, revealed ETo was 41% lower in residential lawn microclimates than in nearby open turfgrass swards. Research has demonstrated that polystands of zoysiagrass and tall fescue can be established successfully, with the potential to provide a high quality turfgrass stand with reduced inputs. Our objective was to determine whether mixing zoysiagrass with tall fescue will reduce brown patch severity while maintaining overall accept­able quality. A Zoysia japonica genotype, TAES 5645, that exhibited partial resistance to large patch in preliminary studies conducted by our collaborators at Texas A&M University, was used as a breeding parent at Texas A&M and crossed with 22 cold hardy zoysiagrasses, resulting in 2,858 progeny. These progeny were evaluated for cold hardiness and agronomic traits (establishment rate, overall quality, spring green up, leaf texture, and genetic color) in Manhattan, KS; West Lafayette, IN; and Dallas, TX; from 2012 to 2014. Water conservation is increasingly important when selecting turfgrasses. Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica), a C4 grass, is more drought resistant than C3 grasses. However, there is some resistance to the use of zoysiagrass in lawns and golf courses due to its extended dormant period when turf is brown. The objective of this study was to evaluate mowing height, tall fescue seeding rate and time for establishment of a mixed stand with seeded zoysiagrass. Percent green cover will ultimately decrease over time when traffic is applied to dormant buffalograss with turfgrass colorants. Data suggests that an additional five weeks of acceptable green cover can be achieved under high traffic situations when Endurant Premium is applied to dormant turf.

In this study, annual nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were greatest in urea and least in untreated (no N) among treatments. Differences were negligible due to irrigation treatment. Irrigation levels may be decreased further in the final year to induce slight stress on the low irrigation treatment. All fertilizer treatments maintained acceptable quality, however the controlled-release fertilizer resulted in more consistent visual quality ratings compared to urea and untreated. Urea fertilizer had higher peak fluxes after fertilization and overall annual emissions than polymer-coated N-fertilizer. Thus, controlled released N fertilizers, such as polymer-coated urea, in turfgrass systems could potentially help …

Turf colorants effectively enhanced green color of dormant buffalograss. Using a higher application rate or adding a midwinter application helped longevity of color. Colorants increased canopy temperatures more consistently than soil temperatures, which may encourage earlier spring greenup.

Excellent annual bluegrass control can be achieved with dormant glyphosate and glyphosate + Endurant treatments applied November through February. The addition of Endurant to glyphosate in early applications (November and December) increases tall fescue control.

Application of 2 and 3 lb N/1,000 ft2 resulted in acceptable buffalograss quality when subjected to simulated golf cart traffic. Across all fertilizer treatments, traffic rates of 8 and 16 passes per week resulted in unacceptable quality ratings for the study duration.

Handheld thermal torches could possibly become a tool to reduce glyphosate-resistant annual bluegrass populations. One month after treatment, 5- and 6-second handheld thermal heat treatments reduced annual bluegrass populations by 50 and 60%, respectively.

Annual ryegrass overseeding into lawn-height zoysiagrass provided acceptable turf color for only four weeks. The colorant Green Lawnger provided a darker green and considerably longer duration of acceptable color as compared to the colorant Match Play (bermudagrass), which was lighter green on zoysiagrass. A single colorant application resulted in acceptable turf color for 7 to 24 weeks; a sequential midwinter application provided acceptable color until spring greenup.

Kansas State University has been cooperating with Texas A&M AgriLife Research – Dallas to identify zoysiagrasses that are superior in quality to ‘Meyer,’ the industry standard, and that have equivalent or better freeze tolerance. Six of eight experimental crosses between select Zoysia cultivars were established in Wichita, Kansas, in 2009 and since that time have had consistently superior ratings in three or more measures.

Application of quick-release nitrogen fertilizer increased buffalograss divot recovery. A quick-release fertilizer at 1 lb N/1,000 ft2 resulted in 50% divot recovery 6.3 days quicker compared to the untreated control.

With less crabgrass pressure, the Kansas site showed an inhibitory effect of pre-emergent herbicides on spring tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum) seeding and establishment. However, at the Nebraska site, greater crabgrass pressure showed a benefit of pre-emergent herbicide use in new spring seeding of tall fescue.

All herbicide treatments at the Rocky Ford Research Center (RF) resulted in unacceptable control, as all plots resulted in 100% green bermudagrass cover by August 25, 2014. Any herbicide treatment combination that included glyphosate provided moderate or better control at Stagg Hill Golf Course (SH). Treatments not containing glyphosate showed no control throughout research trial.

A total of 881 zoysiagrass progeny originating from parental crosses at Texas A&M AgriLife Research – Dallas were planted in 2012, and an additional 104 progeny were planted by Kansas State University researchers in 2013. Starting in 2013, grasses were rated visually on 10 occasions through 2014. These ratings occurred throughout the year to evaluate winter survival and six turf quality characteristics to identify those progeny best adapted to the Kansas site. In September 2014, the top 20 of the original 985 progeny were selected and returned to Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Dallas, Texas, for propagation.

Tall fescue is the cool-season turfgrass best adapted for the transition zone because it tolerates drought and heat and has few serious insect or disease problems. It possesses a rather coarse leaf texture, lacks stolons, and has only very short rhizomes. Efforts to improve cultivar quality include selecting for finer leaf texture, rich green color, and better sward density while maintaining good stress tolerance and disease resistance. New introductions need regular evaluation to determine their long-range suitability for use in Kansas.
