Impact Of Covid-19 On Aviation-Wildlife Strikes Across Europe, Isabel C. Metz, Marta Giordano, Dionysios Ntampakis, Marianna Moira, Anneke Hamann, Rosanne Blijleven, Jürgen J. Ebert, Alessandro Montemaggiori

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife (i.e., wildlife strikes) pose a serious threat toward the safety of aircraft, its crew, and passengers. The effects of COVID-19 related travel restrictions on wildlife strikes are unknown. With this study, we aim to address this information gap by assessing the changes of wildlife hazard management performance across European airports during the lockdown period (e.g., period of reduced operations and borders closure in spring 2020). We also sought to raise awareness of the importance of wildlife strike prevention in times of reduced operations. The objective of our study was to compare wildlife strike data before …

Intensive Hunting Pressure Changes Local Distribution Of Wild Boar, Jakub Drimaj, Jiří Kamler, Radim Plhal, Přemysl Janata, Zdeněk Adamec, Miloslav Homolka

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) is now an important species of wild ungulates in Central Europe. Next to conflicts of wild boar with agriculture, the main threat of wild boar presence lies in the expansion of African swine fever across Europe. The regulation of the wild boar population is complicated by the high reproduction rate and intelligent behavior of the species, which limits hunting effectiveness. We analyzed the spatial behavior of wild boar in an environment with a lack of natural food resources. The study area consisted of a forest complex (1,283 ha) with 2 areas. In the “risk” …

Nomenclatural Adjustments For Hybrids Of The Former Inula L. Within Pentanema Cass.(Asteraceae), Alexey P. Seregin Jan 2021

Nomenclatural Adjustments For Hybrids Of The Former Inula L. Within Pentanema Cass.(Asteraceae), Alexey P. Seregin

Turkish Journal of Botany

Drastic recircumscription of Pentanema (Asteraceae) has resulted in transfers of many species from Inula, whereas hybrids with binomials have not received new combinations yet. However, names for interspecific hybrids of Inula auct. are in active current use, and a dozen nothospecies are regularly mentioned in floras, checklists, and research papers. I have facilitated 12 new combinations for nothospecies in Pentanema: P. ×adriaticum (Borbás) Seregin (P. hirtum × P. spiraeifolium), P. ×haussmannii (Huter) Seregin (P. ensifolium × P. hirtum), P. ×hispidum (Schur) Seregin (P. asperum × P. hirtum), P. ×hybridum (Baumg.) Seregin (P. ensifolium × P. germanicum), P. ×litorale (Borbás) Seregin …

Macrobiotus Noemiae Sp. Nov., A New Tardigrade Species(Macrobiotidae: Hufelandi Group) From Spain, Milena Roszkowska, Lukasz Kaczmarek Jan 2019

Macrobiotus Noemiae Sp. Nov., A New Tardigrade Species(Macrobiotidae: Hufelandi Group) From Spain, Milena Roszkowska, Lukasz Kaczmarek

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A reexamination of the tardigrade collection from the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN) in Madrid was carried out. Specimens from the genera Milnesium, Macrobiotus, and Paramacrobiotus were verified in order to provide their correct identification and 15 taxa were identified. Moreover, a list of corrected species identifications from MNCN is provided. Fourteen specimens and 16 eggs, identified previously as Macrobiotus recens, were attributed to a species new for science. Macrobiotus noemiae sp. nov. is most similar to Mac. naskreckii and Mac. recens but it differs from them by details of egg morphology, mainly by the presence of thin flexible …

Tardigrada Of Bory Tucholskie National Park, Zaborski Landscape Park, And Their Surroundings (Pomerania Province, Poland), Lukasz Kaczmarek, Jakub Kosicki, Milena Roszkowska

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this paper, samples of mosses and lichens collected from Bory Tucholskie National Park, Zaborski Landscape Park, and their surroundings (Pomerania Province, northern Poland) were studied for water bears (Tardigrada). In total, 38 tardigrade taxa were identified and six of them (Hypsibius cf. allisoni, Hyp. scabropygus, Macrobiotus sottilei, Milnesium beasleyi, Mil. dornensis, and Mil. granulatum) are new records for the Polish fauna. Eighteen taxa (only 14 identified to the species level) were found in Bory Tucholskie National Park, whereas in Zaborski Landscape Park this number was much larger, i.e. 28 taxa (including 22 identified to the species level), as well …

Evangelii Gaudium: A European Perspective, Salvatore Moccia Oct 2017

Evangelii Gaudium: A European Perspective, Salvatore Moccia

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

In order to understand the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, we have to analyze the strategic roots of this Pope, a shepherd who lived his life with the smell of the sheep. Only if we recognize the “great enemy” we can fully understand all the Papal “No’s” of the Encyclical: no to an economy of exclusion, no to the new idolatry of money, no to a financial system which rules rather than serves, and no to the inequality which spawns violence. We believe that Pope Francis, with his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, has updated most of the Franciscan reflections on the …

Taxonomy Of Poa Jubata And A New Section Of The Genus (Poaceae), Evren Cabi̇, Robert John Soreng, Lynn Gillespie Jan 2017

Taxonomy Of Poa Jubata And A New Section Of The Genus (Poaceae), Evren Cabi̇, Robert John Soreng, Lynn Gillespie

Turkish Journal of Botany

Poa jubata A.Kern. is an ephemeral, southeastern European species of which little is known. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of Poa L., including all previously identified major lineages, shows this species to be isolated, with a genotype here designated as J (plastid) j (nrDNA). It is assigned to the monotypic P. sect. Jubatae sect. nov. The section is differentiated from other Poa sections in having 5-nerved upper glumes, very narrow palea flanges, an annual habit, and erect solitary culms. Poa jubata occurs along coastal regions of the Balkans and is rather rare. Two new collections were made in 2015 in Thrace, …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 7(1) : 75-86, 2014. Inequalities in health-behaviors exist between regions of Europe, along a North West/South East axis. This study investigated whether prevalence of walking to school and associated psychosocial antecedents differed between these two European regions. Participants were 1,263 children aged 7-11 years, from five countries. Children from North West Europe (n = 641) and South East Europe (n = 622) completed a school travel questionnaire that measured demographics, school commuting mode, travel companion, feelings about their local area, and Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) variables related to walking to school. Multivariate analysis of …

Ctenocallis Israelica – First Record In Central Europe, With A Note On The Genus Ctenocallis, Roman Halaj, Barbara Osiadacz

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper presents a new locality for a rare aphid species from Panaphidini (Aphidoidea: Drepanosiphidae, Calaphidinae), Ctenocallis israelica Hille Ris Lambers, 1954, which was recorded for the first time in Hungary and also for the first time in Central Europe. The genus Ctenocallis Klodnitsky, 1924 has been briefly described. The main morphological diagnostic features of apterous viviparous females have been presented, which allow the distinguishing of separate species of the genus. Their current range and the possibility of its broadening have been discussed on the basis of present information on the occurrence of these aphid species. Furthermore, the history of …
