Richard W. Pohl: Distinguished Botanist, Marjorie Conley Pohl Jan 1997

Richard W. Pohl: Distinguished Botanist, Marjorie Conley Pohl

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In her biographical portrait of Dr. Richard W. Pohl, Mrs. Pohl provides an engaging personal perspective of her late husband, his development as a botanist, his career, and his family life. We gain a sense of Dr. Pohl as a dedicated scientist as well as a humanist. Although Dr. Pohl possessed an abiding curiosity regarding all things natural, he is best known and remembered for his focus on grasses. As Mrs. Pohl documents, this interest in grasses began in the late 1930's and continued throughout his life-ultimately he was regarded as an authority on grass taxonomy both nationally and internationally. …

Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter Jan 1997

Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In an intensive and methodical manner, Power casts doubt upon notions of environmental protection choking economic development. He demonstrates the fallacy of such a position and successfully advocates environmental protection as economically sound. The confusion that exists between the environment and the economy is largely the result of misguided convention.

Distribution And Abundance Of Prairie Plant Species In The Loess Hills, Thomas R. Rosburg Jan 1997

Distribution And Abundance Of Prairie Plant Species In The Loess Hills, Thomas R. Rosburg

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The species composition of grassland and ecotonal communities throughout the Loess Hills was studies between 1990 and 1993. Information pertaining to the latitudinal distribution of species in the Loess Hills, the abundance of species among community types (i.e., habitats), species persistence under woody encroachment, species associations, and resource partitioning among species is provided for the majority of grassland species occurring in the Loess Hills. The most abundant species on extant prairie in the Loess Hills include Bouteloua curtipendula (side-oats grama), Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem), Andropogon gerardii (big bluestem), Cornus drummondii (rough-leaved dogwood), Aster ericoides (heath aster), Carex heliophila (sun-loving sedge), …

Iowa's State Parks: A Various Language, Rebecca Conard Jan 1997

Iowa's State Parks: A Various Language, Rebecca Conard

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa's state park system is distinctive because academically based natural scientists were instrumental in drafting the 1917 State Park Law, in shaping the initial policies, and in establishing the first parks. The mandate of the 1917 law was broad, but its original intent was to preserve and conserve natural resources; providing recreational enjoyment was secondary. Between 1920 and mid-century the founding vision was recast time and again by compromises that sprang from economic necessity, competing interests, and changing societal values. The ideal of resource protection has remained a guiding principle, however, in large part because strong personalities provided continuity of …

Hot-Packaging Reduces Lipid Oxidation And Improves Sensory Characteristics Of Cooked Turkey Meat, Maiko Ishikawa, Dong U. Ahn Jan 1997

Hot-Packaging Reduces Lipid Oxidation And Improves Sensory Characteristics Of Cooked Turkey Meat, Maiko Ishikawa, Dong U. Ahn

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The effects of two vacuum packaging methods (hot and cold vacuum packaging) on the storage stability and sensory characteristics of cooked meat were compared. Ground turkey breast and leg meat patties were cooked, vacuum packaged appropriately, and stored up to 22 days. Lipid oxidation was measured by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test. In addition, Total aerobic count and sensory evaluation (flavor, juiciness, tenderness, overall acceptability) were conducted. There was no significant difference in aerobic plate count by packaging methods; however, panelist rating revealed that hot-packaged turkey leg meat had higher juiciness and overall acceptability scores than cold-packaged ones. Although TBARS …

Midwestern Geology And Cornell College: The First 125 Years, Gene E. Hinman, Paul L. Garvin Jan 1997

Midwestern Geology And Cornell College: The First 125 Years, Gene E. Hinman, Paul L. Garvin

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The history of geology at Cornell College can be traced back almost to the college's beginnings. Though not the first to reach geology at Cornell, William Harmon Norton, more than any other person, shaped the Department of Geology and set it on its course of excellence. Born in 1856, the son of a Methodist minister, Norton developed an ardent interest in geology in his boyhood. A graduate of Cornell in Classics, Norton was hired by his alma mater in 1876 to reach Greek, bur his avocation was geology. He spent most of his spare time on weekends and during summers …

Book Review - The End Of Science: Facing The Limits Of Knowledge, David Lopatto Jan 1997

Book Review - The End Of Science: Facing The Limits Of Knowledge, David Lopatto

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The June, 1997 issue of Harper's Magazine included a list of recently published books that have titles beginning with "The End of". There are thirty-one titles on the list. Publishers have been rushing to cash in on the public's emotional reaction to the coming end of the century. It is difficult to take some of these works seriously. Perhaps the hardest thesis to swallow is that science, including physics, chemistry, biology, and neuroscience, not to mention the social sciences and the philosophy of science, is coming to an end just as our somewhat arbitrary calendar ticks over to a new …

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1997

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Approximately 3% of Iowa's forests are contained in state parks and preserves. In addition to aesthetics and recreation, these protected forests provide a vital service in the unique opportunities they provide for forest research. As intact ecosystems where natural ecological processes dominate, they provide standards by which we measure the effects of livestock pasturing, methods of timber harvest, and other manipulations of managed forests. A number of current studies and public programs emphasize the importance of natural diversity in forests. They rely on state parks and preserves to provide a measure of potential diversity for a given region of the …

Helminth Ova Recovered From Raptors Admitted For Rehabilitation, Shawn Hawks, Rick Klann Jan 1997

Helminth Ova Recovered From Raptors Admitted For Rehabilitation, Shawn Hawks, Rick Klann

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Fecal samples from 34 raptors admitted for rehabilitation were examined for helminth ova. All 34 birds, representing 13 different species, passed helminth ova in their feces. Six different types of helminth ova were identified, including strigeid trematode, cestode, Capillaria, Porrocaecum, Ascaridia and spiurid nematode. From this study, it appears that helminths, particularly tapeworms, are common parasites of raptors.

Research Note: Records Of Thirteen Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) New To Iowa, Foster Forbes Purrington, Kirk Jon Larsen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A long-term ecological research initiative in northeast Iowa tallgrass prairies to evaluate the effects of prescribed burning on prairie insects was begun in 1993. During the course of this work we discovered 13 ground beetle species (Coleoptera: Carabidae) (Table 1) not previously reported from Iowa (Bousquet and Larochelle 1993).

Book Review - Okoboji Wetlands. A Lesson In Natural History, Robert W. Black Jan 1997

Book Review - Okoboji Wetlands. A Lesson In Natural History, Robert W. Black

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Michael Lannoo's reverent, musing history of the Okoboji region, and especially its wetlands and the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, is a uniquely structured, well-written and wonderfully illustrated introduction to a distinct region in Iowa, a rich natural history of wetland organisms and a relatively unexplored branch of environmental ethics. Lannoo draws upon many years of experience in this region, as a student, researcher and teacher, and the wonderful resources of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum to produce a volume that educates the reader of the history and natural history of the Okoboji region and provokes …

The Contributions Of J. A. Udden To An Understanding Of Iowa Geology, Richard C. Anderson Jan 1997

The Contributions Of J. A. Udden To An Understanding Of Iowa Geology, Richard C. Anderson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Johan August Udden served on the faculty of Augustana College from 1888 until 1911. His research during that time was directed toward an understanding of the geology of areas close at hand, the region around Rock Island and nearby areas in Iowa and Illinois. Udden's most significant contributions to Iowa geology were in his treatment of 1) Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary stratigraphy; 2) subsurface geology, including information on bedrock elevations and topography; 3) characteristics and origin of the loess. Most of this information was included in the Annual Reports of the Iowa Geological Survey published between 1899 and 1903. He …

Fungal Colonization Of Alfalfa Stubble Following Harvest, J. K. O'Mara, G. P. Munkvold Jan 1997

Fungal Colonization Of Alfalfa Stubble Following Harvest, J. K. O'Mara, G. P. Munkvold

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Two-year-old stands of alfalfa cultivars Saranac and Vernal, planted in Central Iowa, were sampled 0, 15, and 30 days after the first harvest in 1995 to identify fungi colonizing the stubble left after harvest and evaluate the role of harvest-induced wounds as infection sites for potential crown-rotting fungi. Analysis of variance was conducted to determine if sampling date and cultivar significantly affected incidence of the fungi. All stems were infected with at least one fungal species at every sampling dare. The fungal genera most frequently isolated were Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Fusarium, Phoma, and Rhizoctonia. Fusarium acuminatum was the most frequently isolated …

Carnivorous Spadefoot (Spea Bombifrons Cope) Tadpoles And Fairy Shrimp In Western Iowa, Eugenia S. Farrar, Jane D. Hey Jan 1997

Carnivorous Spadefoot (Spea Bombifrons Cope) Tadpoles And Fairy Shrimp In Western Iowa, Eugenia S. Farrar, Jane D. Hey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Amphibian larval polymorphisms, rarely found in the Midwest, are more common in arid western regions. We have discovered that Plains spadefoot toad, Spea bombifrons Cope, tadpoles occur as carnivorous and omnivorous morphological forms in flooded soybean and corn fields on the Missouri River flood plain of western Iowa. Carnivores have longer snouts, larger beaks with an upper cusp and lower notch, shorter intestines with fewer loops than the omnivores, and they feed on fairy shrimp. A similar polymorphism in Spea multiplicata Cope enhances survival in the desert because the carnivore develops faster after consuming fairy shrimp and is able to …

A Search For Average, Extremes, And Runs Of Unusual Weather In Iowa, R. E. Carlson, D. P. Todey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Temperature and precipitation during the past decade have exhibited wide variation throughout Iowa. Is this unusual? An attempt was made to answer this question by computing various statistical parameters that characterize variation in Iowa's long term climatic record. Absolute deviations were used to identify the most and least variable months and years since 1900. Overall, 1936 with a very cold winter and very warm summer was the least normal year. Runs of daily weather showed that heat and cold stress could often persist for more than 1 month. Runs of dry days were much longer than runs of wet days. …
